I was mulling around on gamespot trying to pass time and i click on the next generation console tabs to see if there was anything new. i clicked on some links and watched some new trailers... and for some reason i was floored... i had seen some before, but now they just look god damned amazing to me...
Alan Wake really just jumped out at me. It's the stand out title that, to me, proves that there is still innovation in this god forsaken industry. Gears of War is looking mighty tasty. It ashames me to say it, but EA might be doing a good job with The Godfather, after seeing their new trailer. Also, Condemned, mixing an FPS with a CSI-esque twist is something I've personally never seen before.
It just seems that developers are starting to get it right. Even current generations titles slated for release look amazing and, while not innovative, fun! King Kong? Tomb Raider: Legend (c'mon... look at it! It's been turned into prince of persia with tits and guns)? Okami? Katamari 2? Shadow of the Colossus? Twilight Princess?
Plus, Nintendo DS titles are getting alot better, no longer are they tech demos... they are full games! I love my copy of Kirby: Canvas Curse, it's great, innovative, and very fun. Nintendogs, hell, I'm buying that just so Nintendo knows that I applaud their innovation and them taking chances like they always have and how they're going to take another with the Revolution.
To really sum it up, gaming is only getting better, it's had it's low points (countless, generic FPS games, remakes (although I do love Conker), sequels, (do we need 13 final fantasy games plus the half-dozen spin offs?), and just really bad games like Aquaman), but it is getting up there, and I'm damned excited.
Note: I hate Sony and EA, I hate them with all the passion in my heart and soul. The PS3 will under deliver on promises as all of Sony's consoles have, and I pray that the Xbox 360 will be able to overcome the PS3 and that the Revolution will do it's awesome thing while Sony and Microsoft quarrel. Even though there are more PS2's in the homes of peoples, Nintendo has made the most money out of all three companies this generation, so I'd say that they truly won this console generation.
Note 2: I buy the PC version of any game that has one, I love my PC... but you PC people out there CANNOT deny the fact that the industry doesn't truly focus on you guys. So don't start bitching about my post cause I didn't touch on it.
Note 3: I just realized i COMPLETELY forgot about Spore... how could I?! Anyway, yes... this is the reason why I'm a gamer... gamesl ike Spore that let you experiment, design, create, destroy... ultimately play God. While Mr. Molyneux might have helped jump-start the "God-Game" genre, Mr. Wright has been able to fully realize that in The Sims, and now in Spore he allows you to not just create people, but other new and exciting creatures. That was the only real innovation I've seen to date that makes me feel happy inside.
THE END.
