I just watched those old Bink videos for the first time and...

I'm really not very impressed...

They're all inferior to the finished game by miles... They show a bunch of places where Valve tightened up the level design and improved certain dramatic sequences.

They way people had been talking about them on these forums, I was expecting to see things that would make me want to shout and punch a walrus but really, the finished product seems so much better! Sure, a couple of things are missing but a lot has been added that more than makes up for it.

Perhaps people just got a bit over-excited by these sequences and remember them as better than they are?

It wasn't as much how they felt or looked like, more the content in them, the enemies that weren't in the game and the weapons.
Me, I don't care, wasn't very excited about the Hydra anyway, which is what most people seem to be whining about.

I'd have liked to have had a fight with a strider, alone or with a few rebels as in the strider video. No rockets, just the manipulator and your ingenuity :)

Seriously, What's with the Hydra? I don't get it? It was just a stupid blue tentacle. I never missed it.

Now, that I was disappointed about, the feeling in that vid was awesome, I just never got that in the game.

Of course, the videos were considerably more impressive before the game was actually released.

Perhaps they left that out 'cause without a rocket launcher or the grav gun & energy balls - you're screwed.

5 rockets on normal or two or three energy balls to bring one down? The shotgun is good... but not that good. ;) By comparison, it's not as if you could bring a tank down in Call of Duty with only an m1, some grenades and a .45. More like three panzerfausts or two panzershreks. In that regard - the HL2 is pretty realistic in what it asks for.

I would have liked that scene a lot. The whole "GET THE HELL OUTTA HERE!" as the guy was stabbed was amazingly horrifying. Maybe you had to escape it, or find some rockets scattered about. Or maybe just as they corner you, Barney comes in and saves you and your squad. Maybe see a citizen fly a helicopter into it :p That'd be so sweet.(He'dve jumped out prior to impact or something)

I still think that scene would have been a good one to leave in the game, even if there was no way to kill the strider and you were forced to run away. It would have given me the impression they were unstoppable and so make the next encounter even more terrifying, with or without rockets.

I actually enjoyed fighting the gunships over the striders because of the way you needed to weave your rockets round them took a little imagination :)

Hint hint

We're most certainly gonna get an expansion. I felt that the game was very edited in certain parts (not to say it still isn't my favorite FPS of all time!) so I'm looking forward to seeing some things we weren't able to have in the release. Hopefully, a lot of the concept work will be implemented (THe Brute combine soldier, the chick infiltrator).

I'm hoping that you'll get to play as Alyx possibly in the events of time before Gordon arrives. I'd like to see some kind of history.

If you play any game without Gordon as the main character, its not going to be made by Valve, they have made it extremely clear the only main character in Half Life is Gordon, and will continue to be that way.

one thing I miss is the intelegence of the ai to know that their weight is suffecent to burst through a door if they run.

Well, they've said they're looking at some sort of content from the viewpoint of Alyx, and IIRC they've also said they want to do all the expansions in-house this time.

They can make a expansion so quickly guys. Doom 3 expansion is due out soon. Valve know Source engine so well. Bit like walking for them. They can create anything with there eyes close almost now since the foundation is there.

We will see alot more goodies to come...

Theres not much from the vid i miss but there are a few things,

one is what Valve said the AI would be. they did get it pretty damn close, but not to where they said it would be. It has some bugs that hopfully can be hammered out with uodates, and some other options added to make them smarter.

I was also hoping for a longer street fight with the striders, much like in the video, where they would follow you. It seems they didn't get the AI for them working right, and relied heavily on scripted instances for drama (blowing up certain walls, attacking certain areas). we never got to see them demolish whole buildings, duck under overhangs (or blow them up), and chase us down roads. They seemed to be limited to areas close by, but unobtainable, or in confined spaces. They also seemed slow and dumb for being the combines main battle tank...

The last thing was they seemed to not put in many physics puzzels and traps. Stuff like in traptown rarely made it in, which sucks, as VALVe has such a nice engine to show stuff off. It would have been nice to have options to kill combine in some other cool, physics ways, even if they were rather simple and didn't change much. How about in ravenholm if you could shoot the drain pipes when creamers where climbing to have it fall and kill them? or a similar trap to kill combine from the binks? Using boxes and hurling shit was fun, but they didn't take it to the next step and include alot of physics based gameplay in it...

other then that, i LOVE this game. guess its nitpicking, but if it took 4 more months to add more of that, i''d gladly wait. But then again, guess thats what the mods are for, and expasions. Lets hope gearbox updates us with a chaper of Shepard
