So,

I made a forum that I named EpicForum (www.epicforum.net) and would basically want some constructive critiscm and hopefully I can improve it. I'd just like to know what people who aren't members think of it. If you'd like to sign up, that's great too.

Thanks for reading this and anything constructive will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you :)

Why would someone want to join your forum, when there are lots of other forums which cover topics that your's does? Is it any better than them?

I need to rethink that. There is no real reason for anyone to join. It's just a friendly community, when some are so elitist. It's just a neutral, friendly forum. Basically in it for the community, that's all.

"gay forum" is not what I call a constructive response.

Thanks for the critism so far.

you need to give people a reason to visit, like gaming news, give-aways, etc...

I can't take you seriously with that avatar.

You don't just make a forum and expect people to join because of the community. Nobody goes "oh, I want to join a community." People join forums that are about things they're interested in. Becoming part of the community is merely the side-effect. You don't tout that as your main "feature"

Also the name is retarded.

A lot of forums these days pay people per post to join there forum and start threads etc.

I'm in this line of business. Pm me if your interested.

The color scheme is horrendous and screams of 'default'.

I agree with Ace, the color scheme is horrendous. I don't see any specific point to the site, as well as no community (1 member?). What's the main focus?

Agree with Ace and MorganFreeman on the color scheme.

Also, whats with the weird avatar/user stuff being on the right?

I know its a new forum, but it seems very small. Perhaps adding more topics/ sections would help out?

Continuation of my last post

Communities don't just happen. Forums should be made out of necessity. HL2.net has a forum because people want to talk about HL2 (when the site started). After 7 years we've had quite a community and community history, and it's a cool place where we talk about all kinds of things, not just the thing we joined the forum for in the first place.

Noobs like you see popular forums and things, and you say "oh cool I want to open a forum like this" and just open one for the sake of having a forum. Unless you've got a large circle of internet friends (an existing community) you can't just make one out of out air.

I mean, you can try. It's certainly not impossible to get enough people who are bored enough to join your forum, and then become friends with them. But even a forum with an existing community isn't going to appeal to someone when there isn't any other reason to join. In other words, you're going to have to keep finding those kinds of people if you want any sort of growth. Your forum won't do any growing on its own when it has nothing to draw in people. People join forums because they're interested in discussing whatever subjects the forum is about. Then, if they find they like the people there, they'll stick around and become a part of the community.

I don't expect you'll want to shut down your forum, but I have no advice to give to you. Come up with some kind of gimmick or something. *coughmtpostmore*

The name of the forum is enough to make me never want to go there. Sounds like it is started by, and will be filled with idiot meme spouting 12 year olds who accompany every post with an image from failblog.

Very first thread I saw had the "Doesn't afraid of anything" meme.

Could an age restriction be used here? Doesn't HL2.net allow only those older then 13?

Bluewolf could make your forum successful.

Not like you can enforce it.

I don't like the name of the forum and I don't like how the information of the poster is on the right side instead of the left. Plus, the entire site just looks disorganized to me, but keep trying. You'll have to do some tests and see what type of format is most liked by the members, and there should be options of what color you want to use, like on here.

And I've noticed that the PlayStation 3 section of the forum has no posts. I wonder why that could be?

Oh wait, it's because the PS3....

You know what, I'm not going to say it. I'll let Darkside say it for me, if he even posts in this thread.

Vegeta has made a good point. People need a starting point, something they have in common.

You put a group of people together and socializing isn't going to be easy, but put them together like say in a convention about tiddly winks or whatever that every attendee enjoys and its a central theme for people to start discussion on and bond.

Ugh, "epic forum." You kids and your use of the word epic. Not everything is epic, you know! Some things can be great, or grand, legendary. There's a whole damn thesaurus out there full of synonyms you can use. You kids and your EPIC. In my day we saved the word epic for things that truly were epic. Now it's lost all its meaning due to people like you overusing it.

Thank you, sir.

THE PS3

HAS NO POSTS

I MEAN NO GAEMS

Lol, he spent money on this.

I mean his mom did.

If that Banimal guy was here? He'd close this thread for advertising.

This is the best thing that has ever happened to this world.

^ I laughed for some reason.

So uhh, let's review the facts.

You joined this forum over half a year ago and currently have 13 posts.

Your name includes the word "cool," some numbers, and what is presumably your own name.

Your avatar is a dumb face of some guy being a spaz. Who thinks this is a good idea? God.

Your forum's name includes the word "epic," with no pretense of being so, even if the word were used correctly.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you're advertising it on a forum where such a thing is against the rules.

Yeah I don't think you have any business being on a forum let alone creating one.

Put in a politics forum and watch your member base go up.

there's no forum out there for ex convicts who tap dance and smoke virginia slim cigarettes...there's an idea

You are doomed to failure. Maintaining an active community is very difficult, but it's a piece of cake compared to how much time and effort (and luck) it takes to actually found a new community. You're going to need a lot more than a domain name and a phpBB3 install for that.

Your community needs to be centric around something - yours seems ostensibly gaming-related but that's not remotely narrow enough a focus given that you can't compete with big gaming sites/communities. Furthermore you need some kind of content in that vein - like how HL2.net has news (news being our largest user draw by far), articles, content, etc. People need a reason to find and regularly visit your site beyond simple forums.

Read Ennui's post for the condensed version of what I said. Also richer vocabulary.

You god damn Dec join daters stick together don't you?
