I really loved Quake II, but it's a shame my computer can't run it. When I pop the CD in, the autoplay, it says I don't have a Direct3D installed. Horse sh!t! I have an ATI Radeon 9800 PRO.
And then when I go to setup manually, it says that Quake II won't install on my version of Windows NT/95. I understand that Windows XP didn't exist at the time...but is there a way to by-pass this?

Well, if it won't even install, I can't think of any way to bypass it. Some things will run if you change the compatability mode, but for most things, that doesn't make a difference.

You could get VMware and install windows 98 on your machine, and install QuakeII under that. Then you can boot windows98 from within windowsXP and play quakeII to your hearts content.

See, Windows95 and 98 were built on DOS code, where as WindowsNT/2000/XP are not. So games built for Windows95/98 don't necessarily "speak the same language" as WindowsXP. And aside from patching the game, there's not a whole lot that can be done about that.

http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1 try this :). its worked for some REALLY old games i have, i dont know what kind of success you will have with that.

1) try right clicking on the setup executable and putting it in 95/98 compatibility mode

2) like the previous post said, get vmware (Free trial, you need the install disk)

compatability mode makes it work. Make sure you select the Windows ME option for best compatability (don't ask me why, it just does).
