What do you think would be the best to replace my dead 9800?
A 6800GT or X800Pro? I got £300 budget max and can get the GT for £270.
What would be the better buy?

Get a 6800GT. It has 16 pipelines and can easily be overclocked a little to reach the ultra speeds. X800 pro only has 12, it's not as good.

We have coverd this severAL times, but anyway: early on in the race, it was the x800pro, but the doom benchies seem to favor a 6800GT, the consenus is this is due to D3 using openGL, which ati really prefers DX9. HL2 will be DX9 so its benchies will undoubtedly favor ATI. My personal preferance is the 6800GT, Mainly because I have 3 machines, and I keep my HW a long time. So having a card that has the latest technology/features, instead of the fastest one is how I buy.

Get the 6800 GT. It's really the best budget card out there. And, as bosox said, it can be easily overclocked to Ultra speeds. (Though, I suggest you don't overclock. Doom 3 is supposed to have problems with overclocking.)

since when is ~400 dollars budget :p
but really, the GT performs really well, so go for that

I'd go for the 6800GT if you can find one. The 16 pipelines is a good bet that it won't fall behind the X800pro (12 pipelines) in HL2. It is a good buy for other games too.
If you can only find the X800pro then go for it.

ps
I love these sesame street avatars. ;)
lol

how would the 6800gt compare to the x800xt? Same thing or does the xt catch up?

Seeing as virtually all 6800 gt's overclock to ultra levels very easily they're the best value for money cardas about, imo :)

The XT will perform the best because it has the full 16 pipelines and has a higher clock speed than any of them.
The X800pro performs below the 6800GT because it only has 12pipelines. If you look at the 6800 that also has 12pipelines, the X800pro blows it out of the water.
Nvidia possitioned their cards very well in the mid range but that sort of means no one in their right mind would buy the Ultra. The X800XT PE is the end all be all card though. It is tops overall.

I smell an nVidia fan... You can unlock the other 4 pipes of the x800pro to increase performance to almost XT speeds, but the XT has faster memory.
