I am so dang confused about pci-express that I don't even know where to begin. I hear about these x16, x8, x4, x2 and x1 things. does it matter what the x thing means? BTW I plan on getting a pentium prescott processor, a pci-express card, and numerous other goodies. Any tips would be appreciated.

Here is the system I want to build:
Processor: Pentium 4 3.4ghz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116173
Mobo: Pci express with 1 x16 slot
Card: Bfg Geforce 7800gtx
Sound: Not Important now
Case: Something that will comply with mobo and processor
Ram: Good stuff, dual channel 2 gb

You can find PCI-E compatible mobos here and im sure you could find them from other sources if you dont want to get them there. Browse that shop and im sure you'll be able to find the other components you are looking for.

Edit: Yeah I have to agree with giant on this, the above link is for pentium mobos. But if you're looking for a gaming rig I'd go with AMD. I went with pentium 4 and regretted it.

go with amd if your going to spend that much there much better for gaming but if u want pentium go ahead

Just make sure the Sockets of the CPU and the Motherboard match.
PCI-Express 16X is what the graphics cards use. Don't worry if a board has or doesn't have PCI-Express 2x,4x etc

BTW why is amd better for gaming?

you'd be stupid to not get an Athlon 64 if your going for gaming.

then for motherboard get DFI Lanparty Nforce 4 Ultra D

dude, the intel 915 chipset will be perfect for you!
it has integrated sound chip that will last u til i get a soundcard if u want one

edit: o wait the 915 is LGA 775. get a 775 processor! the 478 is for teh lose :p

I find it pathetic that a 3500 can beat a p4 670 when it costs 1/3 the price of the 670.

exactly why i said he would be an idiot to not get an AMD processor.

AMD it is, thanks guys. I gotta do some research into it and find which one I want and Ill check back with ya'all

Ok, I've changed my mind on the processor, AMD ftw. Here's the one I had in mind http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...ctCode=80719-R It is an athlon 64fx 3700+. Do any of you know anything about this processor?>
Yeah it's a nice choice, BUT there is 1 flaw.
I would go for socket 939. Socket 939 is more "future proof".
I mean just about every AMD cpu uses it. From the 3000 to the Dual Cores. Thats why I have it, so I wont have to buy a totally new motherboard to get a new cpu.

Also try and go for the Veince core ones, there the new cores that support SSE3 and run a little cooler.

They do have a Socket 939 3700+ which is just a little more!
This chip also should run cooler and OC a bit more since it's 90nm instead of 130nm.
It's the SanDiego core instead of the Clawhammer. Few more tweaks and improvments.

And like Minerel touched on, if you ever wanted to upgrade to a Dual Core CPU then this is the Socket to do it on.
Asus or DFI nforce4 motherboards would probably be best.

It's got PCI-Express, looks good to me. Nice price too.

Get PC3200 DDR400 memory. It's faster. Two sticks of 1GB perferably. You don't want to fill up all your slots with 512mb sticks.
Check the Cas Latency (CL) or Timings and make sure its a 22 or 2.5.
3 is slow.

DDR2 won't work with the board.
Also DDR 400 with timings of 2 or 2.5 is faster than DDR2 533 with timings of 3 or 4.

When ordering online I'd try to stay with the same store. If you have issues with the shipment or the products then it's just one place to talk to. Also all your stuff gets there at the same time.

Both are good brands. Although they are CL3 so they are a little bit slow compared to CL2 or 2.5. Good price though and either will work fine. I'd go with the kingston since they are at zipzoomfly.

Although OCZ has some good sticks at newegg.com (ship only in the US). Priced a little higher although they are CL2. Newegg.com's prices for the Athlon 64 3700+ and Asus board are the same as zipzoomfly btw. ;)

Kingston was just a bit expensive. As for shipment issues, I don't need all the stuff at once as I still need to procure a video card, which will take some thinking.

Yeah thats a good one. OCZ makes good stuff.

Ok, here is the system I plan to build. Take a look and please tell me what you think:
