Like the thread title states.. I need the best wireless router for under $80.. I would like something 54 Mbps or higher.. I would love a 108 Mbps wireless router.. I need it to give off the best signal.. My current router drops the signal all of the time.. I need a newer router since I game on wireless and this one I have is pure and utter shit..

Please.. Post your suggestions..

Thanks in advance!

What router do you have now? And what's located around your router? Any electrical devices such as halogen lamps, speakers, monitors, or cordless phone bases? cordless phones + wireless routers in most cases doesn't equal out too well especially if its a 5.8 Ghz phone. Might as well try to identify if there may be other causes to the intermittent connectivity whether it's the router itself or something on your side.

Oh yeah, you don't have lead in your walls do you? :p

It is quite an old router.. It is a Netgear MR814v2. Its signal is terrible.. No cordless phone bases, no speakers, nothing. I make sure it is not surrounded by anything that could obstruct its signal..

My walls are silk.. ;) No, they do not have lead in them.

Have you updated your routers firmware and have you tried to reposition your router to a different spot? Has your router always been this problematic? If not, it may be a sign of something else.

As a general rule anything blocking a direct line of sight from point A to point B will cause a massive signal loss. In a open field a router's signal may reach 120 feet, in a house or office building, the signal may drop off after 30 feet. So the less walls it has to go through, the stronger the signal will be.

Also, the object causing interference doesn't have to be near the router to cause problems. My microwave is 15 ft away in a nother room and still causes connection problems when people use the microwave. Pay attention to what objects are running next time your signal drops.

If moving your router doesn't work or isn't an option, you may want to consider a more powerful antenna. Depending on where you get it, this can be a much more reasonably priced option to buying a new router (especially if your old one works just fine). Often times this will improve performance better than a new router. In my experience routers tend to have a fairly long life span.

Another troubleshooting idea is to play with Windows network settings. In my experience Windows XP + Wireless networking = the devil. Depending on the wireless card, the card may not work properly unless windows is in control of the settings.

Now on to a new router part of your question. Any router faster than 54 Mbps is a marketing gimmick. I won't go into details but if you buy a 108 Mbps router, do not even remotely expect to get that additional signal speed. Another important thing is that router speed does not always mean the signal of the router will travel farther.

If you are doing online gaming where ping is important, having a wired connection is always better. ;)

I think it has something to do with Bosely saying in Charlies Angles Full Throttel "Whasa matta? You neva seen an Eyerish Black mahn befoh?".

And just to secure my manley hood, yes, I did see the movie. But those of you guys laughing your asses off, that was some hot shit. The nightclub scene where all of them did their strip tease? You missed out.

Oh and please explain about the "over 54 mbps" thing.

I have the linksys wireless-G 2.4Ghz 54Mbps Router and I like it allot, not the longest range in the world but it works, great singal srength nothign really to complain about it after the firmware was updated it basically runs flawless.

The problem I am faced with is that I am 2 floors away from where my router is so going wired is strictly a big no-no.. I would love to take the modem and router and place it in my room, but I am not allowed..

Routers have different speeds. Ranging from 11Mbps to 125Mbps if not more.. All that really means is that upload speeds between the PCs connected to the router will go as fast as the router allows it unless you have a wireless card that is less than 54Mbps, but it will run at whatever said card is.

I was thinking about purchasing the LINKSYS WRT54G. Is this the router you have? I was thinking about purchasing it because I heard many great things about it..

I would love to purchase the Belkin Pre-N router, but I do not have that kind of cash at the moment.

Getting a new router may not fix the problem. It may help a bit but not solve the problem. Buying a hi-gain antenna is probably a cheaper and more effective solution. Plus if it doesn't work, return it. You can buy these antennas at your local Fry's Electronics or CompUSA.

Those stores aren't local for me.. :'(

A Belkin Pre-N router could fix my problem, correct? I have heard marvelous things about them..

So you are telling me its a good router?

A bit off topic dont ya think? Anyway, the ONLY dlink router i'd ever reccomend is the gaming router. Every dlink router i've owned has had stability problems.

What do you mean off topic?

Here is the deal... I am going to be working for a week. I will be making around $224.. I am going to try and spend a little of that on a router preferably one of the newer kinds that supports 3u like the Belkin Pre-N or the D-Link Gaming Router.. Although both cost a pretty penny, they do seem like they give off a much stronger and more reliable signal.

Yes i have it and it is extremely good router, best brand i have ever worked with along with belkin for routers.

I get a excellent signal threw one wall, I havnt really tried range so I can't comment on how that will be for anyone else but I can say for a room away the LINKSYS wireless router is awesome, and great for gaming and a steal at the price.
