can someone help me out with this? im about 6 feet tall, 245 lbs, i have tried atkins 3 times but i have to quit after 4 or 5 days because i feel like im going to throw up the entire time. im willing to exercise, but i dont want to do too many situps because they just polain hurt, jogging would be fine, and weight lifting too. i guess i could eat salads, but i hate the way they taste, but i would still do it. i really need to lose weight. does calorie counting work? what about those diet pills? people say "eat healthy" but i honeslty dont know what that means. all i can think of that is healthy is salads and grilled chicken. right now i have completely cut soda out (i used to drink like 4 or 5 cans a day when i was 14) i only drink water. i have a water cooler in my room to remind me of how i should be drinking more water (i used to average a glass of water per month, now its like 5 a day) and i have tried to cut back on my food intake. i eat approx.

breakfast: never eat breakfast
lunch: a chicken sandwich from the uni sports grill place
dinner: maybe 2 slices of pizza

thanks for your help and please dont flame me and call me fat, i already know i am ;(

do you drink a lot of sodas or eat much candy? If you can almost completely cut out sugars it will help dramatically, and yes, jogging, walking and running are your best way to cut the fat.... Really any kind of aerobic excercise will get the weight down.

You need to have 3 meals everyday, it will help. Eat breakfast on the morning (force yourself, i dont like to eat on the mornings but i do it anyways).

I hope you dont eat pizza all the time. Get some real food and eat some salad with it.

Im not good with this kind of stuff since ive never done it (dont have a problem with my weight), but you need to find a balance in what youre eating.

If you like DDR, get a good DDR mat and play like hell :)

The forums are great for support. The community is based on people who have gone from being out of shape to getting into shape.

If you are willing to change your eating habbits drastically and do exercise, you can have the body you've always wanted. I'll give you a few tips, but I strongly advice you go to John Stone's site and read read read.

Eating:

Atkins is bad. I know, I have done it many times.

What you want to do is cut down on sugars and refined carbohydrates. Do not drink soda!! Eat 100% whole wheat bread instead of white. Eat brown rice instead of white. Limit products with flour or starch. The goal here is to eat complex carbohydrates, which take longer to burn and give you long lasting energy. Processed carbohydrates burn quickly, overload the system, and need to be stored as (guess what) fat.

Do not eat anything that is fried! You do need some fats, but you need to aim for mostly unsaturated fats found in foods like olive oil and almonds.

And be sure to get enough protein. I try not to eat too much red meat, but its up to you. Protein powder (whey) is a great source of supplimental protein, and is rather cheap at Costco.

As long as youre working out and building muscle, you should aim for about 40% carbs, 40% protein, and 20% fat (by calories). You want to eat carbs in the morning (Regular Oatmeal is best!!) and afternoon, and not in the evening or nighttime, as carbs left in your system when you go to sleep will turn to fat. You want to have a steady supply of Protien all day long.

Oh, and drink plenty of water ;) (and yes, counting calories is a good idea, though personally I find its a lot of trouble).

Exercise:

There is no such thing as spot reduction. Doing situps right now is pointless,. its not going to make your gut go away. What you need to do is Cardio. Jog (dont run), bike, use an eliptical trainer, whatever. Just get your heart going for 30 - 45 minutes 3-4 times a week. Weightlifting on the other days will also be huge; the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn.

I hope this helps. I've done a lot of reading on this and certainly know this works. I've lost 40lbs in the last year, and am now in the best shape of my life. But still, dont take my word for it,. go check out www.johnstonefitness.com

fluke your post is very.. complex.

yes thats a good word.

a good phrase is "confusing as hell"

but ill try to write it down and keep it with me or something..

Ive lost 4 stone (56lbs) in the six months by:

1. Having cereals for breakfast every day. get the metabolism going

2. Having a single home-made sandwich and a banana for lunch. Home-made so I know the fat content. I usually have chicken or low-fat cheese spread.

3. Having a low-fat meat and LOTS of vegetables for dinner in the evening. Chicken & turkey are best but the odd bit of pork or beef doesnt matter every now and again. If you get bored with cheicken every night try lots of different sauces & coatings (check the calories and fat content of them first)

4. Alcohol once or twice a week max.

5. As much excercise as I can spare the time for. Usually badminton, squash or football (soccer) if I have people to play with or go to the gym if I dont.

6. Not snacking or eating after 9pm

Worked for me, even with the occasional lapse it all came off and my fitness levels are now rally high due to all the excercise.

Good luck with it

Cheers

Yes, but so is the human body. Its really not that tricky once you get into it. Bookmark john's site and check out that animation :)

Oktup's plan is pretty much in line with what I said. Still, it helps to know why it works ;)

Atkins is NOT NOT NOT a real diet...

You need to eat regularly, skipping meals will not help you loose weight in the long run. Only for a short period of time, then your weight will bounce back up to what it was or even higher.

You don't need to eat sallads to lose weight. You just need to cutback on the ammount of food you eat, and junk food. Eat more lowfat stuff, but still eat healthy. Eat more vegetables with your dinner, try to lower the fat and sugar you put into your food. (I know this can be hard in the US, you guys put sugar into EVERYTHING!). Making your own meals would be best, then you can control what you put into it. Also try to eat more fish and chicken. Grilled chicken isn't as healthy as fried in a frying pan. But don't put too much butter when you fry it, with chicken, try to stick to oliv oil for example. And don't drink TOO much water, the human body needs around 2-3 liters of water per day. You don't need to drink that ammount, you get it from food etc. too. Going to the gym to lif weights won't make you loose weight, it will only build up your muscles. Going jogging will however burn fat, and that's what you want to do. So go for a jogg once a day, make the jog longer each time. You need to find a length that you're comfortable with, and remember to make it longer each time.
And remeber to cut down on sweets, cakes, icecream etc. Don't eat it. It contains more fat and other unhealthy stuff that you think.
And DO NOT! go on a diet, if you wish to go on a diet contact a nutrition specialist. They know what you need to eat so that you get all the vitamins, fats that you need.

Hope this helps!

If you just wat to lose fat go to the gym and just use the cardio machines such as the bikes, steppers, cross trainers & treadmills.

As for a good substitute for a banana, try an apple, oarnge or pear (or virtually any fruit)

You don't have to follow the old "three meals a day" rule. In fact, you should have more meals but make them smaller (so they add up to the normal amount of food). It will keep your metabolism high throughout the day rather than letting it slow down during the hours between meals. If you eat the same amount of total food spread out over twice as many meals you will burn more fat. Also, the more food you eat per meal the more likely some of it will be stored as fat. Working and/or going to school can make it hard to have a lot of meals, so you might need to carry around something like a granola bar or some other kind of portable, healthy snack.

Anyway, you need to have a three-pronged approach to getting into shape:
Nutrition - Proper nutrition gives you a balance of everything you need without too many leftovers to be turned into fat... though, if you want to build muscle, lose fat, or some other specific type of training you should adjust your diet accordingly... but not to the extreme of completely removing carbs, protein, or fat from your diet. They are all necessary parts of a balanced diet.
Cardio - Cardiovascular exercise strengthens your heart, lungs, etc... while burning fat (and actually some muscle if you do too much).
Weight Lifting - It obviously makes you build muscle, but it also helps to burn fat in the long run. Think about it like a semi compared to a mini cooper. The semi is bigger and stronger, so it uses more gas to run.

EDIT: Another important aspect of health is stress. Some people really need to learn how to cut down on stress. It causes the adrenal glands to produce a hormone called cortisol that increases your appetite and makes the body store extra fat in the midsection (this is strongly correlated with the development of cadiovascular disease including heart attacks and strokes). I haven't had a problem with stress since I adopted an "(shrugs shoulders) Eh, what can you do?" attitude toward life several years ago. Don't worry about things you can't control. More specifically, don't care about what others think of you. You can't please everyone, so just try to make yourself happy.

a) Eat breakfast
b) Exercise
c) Cut out junk food and pizza.

Its not rocket science.

Stop eating useless stuff (candy etc.) and work out. I don't think there's anything more to it. You can forget about diets, though, because they only help you for a limited time.

Go and see your doctor. He may diagnose you as diabetic.

Before you do any diet and excercise regime, go and see your doctor.

Maybe as another form of exercise a jumping rope? Those things are really good for cardio training.

Cardio is best, just do that and you can really lose some weight, start drinking just water and get on a good diet. But you really don't even need to change your diet, just portion control, only take enough to fill yourself.

yeah plenty of exercise.

essentially you want to kick start your hormones, which will help shape your body and keep you in tip-top condition. to do this, you need to do plenty of leg work at the gym. mainly concentrate on treadmills and bikes. your leg muscles are the largest in your body, so working them to death will do good things to the rest of your body.

jogging with your mp3 player is great. i used to do that. i'd catch a bus to the end of the line, then jog back while listening to my mp3 player. do that once or twice a week as well as going to the gym, and you'll be fit in no time.

on the food side, a lot of it just comes down to your metabolism. that's why some people can eat what they want and never gain weight, and why others can just look at a bar of chocolate and gain 5 stones.

what i'd do, is make sure i had plenty of bran. whether it's from cereal fruit etc. the bran will help your digestive system break down the food. you might also want to think about taking a laxative once in a while to clear out your system, it may sound crude but it does help a great deal with your metabolism and overall health.

as for food, i'd say just eat whatever the hell you want, but be sensible about it. "everything in moderation" as they say.

and good luck

Eating healthy is always good but don't go overboard with it. You want a diet that you can realistically follow. I suggest making your own food. Anything fast tends to be loaded with too much of something. Drinking water is very good for you. More importantly exercise. Just run. A lot. The more the better. And remember don't expect to lose all that weight all at once. It's a slow process. Good luck.

STOP DRINKING COKE/PEPSI!!!!!!!!!!

I cannot stress this enough.

I stopped drinking Coke because it makes my face breakout pretty bad. And without even TRYING I lost over 20 pounds..

I did have a more than usual active winter, but still..I know coke played a large part.

I never drink it anymore, unless I am eating out and I don't have much choice.

You skip breakfast?
Bad idea. If you want to lose weight, do it the good way. Skipping meals isn't a good idea. You should still eat, but not as much. And excercise more. If you're trying to excercise and you haven't ate anything, then you're not really progressing at all.
Try running up and down on the stairs, and motivate yourself to keep going. Do as much as you can and make a schedule you can follow everyday. Usually, an hour of cardio will make you lose weight.
Oh, and skip Pepsi or Coke.

I only read your first post but I know you HAVE to start eating breakfast.. and it lots of greens. dont just run..LIFT WEIGHTS..lifting weights and running at the same time doesnt only make you loose weight FASTER but gets you the sexay muscles.

all these people are wrong wraith :D listen, im about 6 foot too and i weighed 215, i was approaching very fat. well somehow i lost 30 pounds in one month and i didn't try. i weighed 175 at the end of that month, and ever since i just been losin weight. i currently weigh 150 soakin wet :D anyways, it's really not hard, first off yes water water water. water will flush ur system out and it's just good. i only drank water that one month. i never really eat breakfest so people who tell you that you need 3 meals a day to lose weight are bs. you just gotta cut back on eating alot period. eat alot less then you are used to eating, you should feel hungry a little still after every meal. thats the only way your gunna know that your losing weight. im not sayin go anorexic or bulemic but still, just cut back on it all. i never even worked out that whole month and i lost that weight, so i know it can be done. exercise is supposed to make you wanna throw up, thats the point, ur supposed to go till you cannot go anymore. thats how you know it's really doing what it needs to do.

actually your wrong.. you wanna eat 6 SMALL meals a day.. you have to keep your metabolism moving. If you dont eat breakfast your metabolism wont be burning any food for energy.. it will just be storing it all in as FAT. So eat 6 small meals a day. and no mcdonalds or any of that bs.. eat chicken, fish and protein.

but you are right about some points.. definetly dont eat food until your stomach is about to explode.. always leave a little room in your stomach.

You can change you diet to lose weight, but it's better to workout with cardio and etc...
Not only do you lose weight, but you can gain muscles and improve your body even more.

One of the MAIN things, above eating and diet, is the exercise.

If you kept your same eating habits (you really should eat breakfast, too, that hurts you more than it helps by not eating it) but just added exercise, over a course of about 2 weeks (Some people get aggravated because they can't just see it right after the first day of exercise :p) you would be able to visibly notice a difference in the mirror.

If you have a treadmill, or even an area to run on (road, if you don't mind running outside) jog/walk for 25 minutes. Don't worry about how far you go, getting the heart rate up for that long is what will have the effect. Simply start jogging, warming up, getting your heart rate into the ideal range, and if you start getting winded, just walk, but don't let your heart rate drop to like a sitting rate or anything.

You will lose weight just from that mate. If you want to lose weight AND gain muscle, you've got to lift weights. Weight lifting alone will NOT make you lose weight- you will only gain muscle under your current fat. You have to do cardiovascular exercise to do that.

So start a daily jog/walk. Slowly you'll start going farther each day. You'll start having to walk less as you just won't get tired. And you'll look better in a few weeks--- Don't stop when you just think you look better, lest you just lapse into a bad situation again.

Edit: Also, don't focus so much on meaningless 'weight' (the measure) Focus on how you look in the mirror and your body fat. Perhaps you'll lose 20-25 pounds, be around 220, and be looking slimmer and such. This counts even more so if you include weight training, as muscle mass is heavy.

Another thing is if you lift weights and do cardio, lift weights first. That burns off carbs so wen you start jogging/biking/whatever it burns more fat.

No, no and NO! You must eat a big breakfast (just look at my milkshake I do everyday: One pear, one banana (the important is two fruit), yogourt, pablum for baby and milk), and I eat a toast with peanut butter on it. Breakfast is the most important meal in the day. For lunch, I usually eat a sandwich, carrots, glass of water and an apple. For dinner, I eat not too much, like everybody should do. And after dinner, I go jogging for 1 hour around my bloc. If that worked for me, that should work for you.

You should not skip meal... you will gain weight if you do. Just eat the same quantity of food you usually do but replace them for legumes or fruits.

You should do cardio, then lift weights.
First, do cardio and then stretch the muscles. It's better to stretch your muscles after you have warmed up. And you'll also get more oxygen in your blood.

cardio. but you don't have to run till you feel like keeling over and dieing, the most important thing is that you're DOING cardio(doing it and doing it and doing it well) for AT LEAST 20-30 minutes at a time, if you want to lose weight. doing any less, and you'll see minimal improvement if any.

If you want to lose weight you have to remember three simple facts:

1. If energy consumed < energy used, you will lose weight.
2. Protein helps build muscle.
3. Muscle burns more enrgy than fat.

This is why the Atkins diet works. A steak 9oz steak is more filling than a half loaf of bread so people end up eating less so the ammount of energy they consume decreases. People excercise while dieting which also increases thier energy used furthur tipping the balance toward weight-loss. In addtion, the protien in the steak, combined with excercise, helps build muscle which burns more energy just sitting there than fat does.

So what we have is a triple whammy of increased enrgy useage and decreased energy intake leading to weight loss.

HOWEVER! You dont need to go on the Atkins diet to take advantage of that tripel whammy. All you need to do is try to build muscle, which, incidentally, dosent mean avoiding carbs.

1. Eat carbs before you go to the gym. This will increase your blood sugar so you have more energy available to burn in the gym.

2. Get a notebook and write down what you do in the gym. Once you can do ten repetitions of a wieght, bump it up. This will allow you to constantly build muscle and show you that you're making progress.

3. After the gym, eat protein to help your muscles repair themselves. The trifecta of protein intake is: Cottage cheese, *plain* yogurt, protien powder.

4. Know what you're eating! That means measuring your food and reading the package to find out how much energy you're consuming. You'll feel like a wuss measuring out cearial, but its neccisary if you want to know how much energy you're taking in.

Do all that and in a few months you'll notice a definite change in wieght and appearance.

I hope this helps. I've done a lot of reading on this and certainly know this works. I've lost 40lbs in the last year, and am now in the best shape of my life. But still, dont take my word for it,. go check out www.johnstonefitness.com

Pretty much what i did to lose about 50 pounds (had to work that out from english weight measurements! :p) but I would advise against protien whey and just eat white fish or poultry in a dish instead as you gain additional nutrients. Poultry contains zinc and a protien that is rich in Myoglobin which contains a lot of iron so its better for you. I would also advise you to eat plenty of nuts (not salted or roasted) as they contain plenty of amino acids which the body uses to break down fats. They also contain lots of complex carbs, some protiens and quite a few other goodies! Pine nuts and pistachio nuts are great for this!

High protien and low carbohydrate diets work mainly because people in the western world at least eat MANY times the amount of carbohydrates the average person needs in a single day. A typical person who leads an average inactive lifestyle will only need around 30 grams of carbs in thier diet in one day. A single can of regular coke contains 39g of carbs in one hit! A person eating a large big mac meal with large fries and large coke can look forward to consuming as much as 250g of carbs! What does the body do with excess carbohydrate in the bloodstream? It either flushes it out of your body via the kidneys or turns what it can into fat!

Now onto protien. Doctor atkins hypothesised that his diet works due becuase the body finds it very easy to process carbs into either energy or fat if unsed and that the opposite is untrue of Protein. He believed protien the body actually used more energy to process protiens into usable fuel energy and in turn got less energy out. This is where doctor atkins theory falls apart as the body uses just just as much energy to metabolise protien but just does it over a longer period.

What modern science has found out about the atkins diet is that protien itself is they key to the diets success. In an effort to find out how the diet works a group of british scientists hypothesised that the high amount of fat in the atkins diet might have something to do with its success. They believed that Fat itself might be an appetite suppressant so set up a controlled experiment with 2 groups of people. They fed one group on foods that had added fats such as creams and butters and another group on the same food without the added fats and monitored thier progress for several weeks by telling them to write down any time they felt hungry or had hunger pangs. To make sure thier experiment was controlled they didn't tell each group of people which was bieng fed the higher fat foods. Half way through the experiment they also switched which group was bieng fed the high fat diet.

Suprisingly they found that fat had no effect on appetite so they looked for other things in the diet what may cause a decreased appetite and also noticed another common feature of the atkins diet. High amounts of protien! So they repeated the same experiment and this time included a third control group of people who ate foods with added protein. What they found amazed them as the people who ate higher amounts of protien could go almost twice as long without eating and often left meals unfinished.

So in a nutshell Carbs make you put on fat easily and protien makes you less hungry! Cut down on carbs and saturated fats (those are bad too) within a healthy balanced diet that includes plenty of protien!!
