Today, Ubisoft was at my school with 7 debug Xboxes running PoP2, Ghost recon 2 and Rocky. Most unfortunately, Splinter Cell 3 was missing, but at least I played PoP2. It was about the same demo that we saw at e3 this year and it was really fun.

The combat system has received a good dose of polish. In fact there are quite a few combos, especially some involving jumping on your opponent and landing either on him or others. You can also grab and throw enemies on others, on a wall, or down a pit. After a few hits, the prince can cut their head off or slice their torso in two. Fortunately, you don't have to stab them with a dagger to finish them, but they still disappear in a cloud of sand when they die. The good thing is that their weapons don't disappear, so you can pick them up. Some even had axes. They are a lot of possibilities with the environment during a fight by either jumping continuously from wall to wall while stabbing opponents, or when turning around a column slashing everyone in the way.

In one of the rooms, there were some spikes that would come up from the ground when stepping on a switch. It was fun to this trap to destroy enemies. And this time they don’t teleport near you, they can run and are much more agile than in sands of time. The giant troll was really great, you could walk in between his legs as long as he does not kick you.

The graphics were much better than in sands because of dynamic shadows! Although objects did not cast shadows, it was great to watch a sword fight moving from one light source to the another. There was also some bump mapping and specular highlights that gave more life to the environment and characters.

I am convinced that this game will surpass sands of times, altought this demo seemed to have less acrobatics and more fights.

Ubisoft was at your school!?
I wish game publishers visited my school... :(

But that's way cool...
You got to play Prince of Persia: Warrior Within. I am so jealous.
I want to play Ghost Recon 2 NOW!

actually, they were recruting people (i'm at an enginnering school in montreal). Last week EA was here, but they did not have any new games to play, nor any nice setup.

Its really great to have two big game developpers in your city.

so is not a normal school right?

cuz will be cool that a game publishers will come to a school whit demos to play

Makes sense that Ubisoft Montreal would come to your school, you are in Quebec afterall.

Dude! What school are you at?

I live in Montreal, too.

looks like it, from what i've read.

Damn, really too bad if it ends up the way its looking now, just because they want to make it more like an action game, as if the first wasn't intense.... dumbasses, the whole lot :flame:

You lucky sod :)

I loved Sands of Time and can't wait for this.

How was the frame rate on the Xbox?

Ubisoft is targeting 60 framerates for the Xbox. He probably got around that when he played.
Unfortunetly, the PS2 is aiming for 30 framerates per second.

The framerate was perfect (more than 30fps) during the game, but the pre-rendered cutscenes were at about 2 fps ! There were a few clipping bugs that i'm sure will be corrected before launch.

I played for about a minute at GR2. It looks ok, but I can't say that I liked the third person mode. I don't know why, but you cant walk threw bushes. I haven't played the first one, so I can't say much about this game.

I study at l'Ecole Polytechnique (part of the University of Montreal). Ubisoft will be at school tomorow as well (tuesday), so you can try to come and see it.

check out http://www.ubisoftcampustour.com/ to see when and where they will be(montreal, ottawa, toronto and vancouver).

That's awesome, thanks for the link.
Can't make it tomorrow, though. Maybe I could try and catch them while they're touring McGill.

Awesome! There will be one in Vancouver! But by the time they get there, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within will be released.
Even though I don't exactly live in Vancouver, I live pretty close and they really mean Greater Vancouver and they are going to the college my mother went to.
I have a question, since this is in colleges and universities, is there a certain age requirement?

Sand of times, is developed by Ubi Montereal. So you speack French ?

i got sands of time for free with my video card.

its a ok game but the fighting is so boooooring it is so extreeemly repetitive . at first it was cool but after a while u just wanted to finish the fights as soon a possible lol, but the problem was tooo many enemies lol damn they just keep on respawning.

the jumping etc was cool though, i havent finished it yet because i got bored from the fighting.

i dont think i will buy the new 1

I was lucky enough to learn english during my early childhood (before 4 years old), but I still have an inevitable accent.

Yeah, I too was sick of those big long sand zombies respawing. But fighting in the new PoP is actually really fun. There are a lot of combos to learn and much more moves than in the first one. From what I played, I think you'll be asking for more battles.

The fighting in Sands of Time isn't so bad with a joypad.

PoP is a console game at heart - and not really suited to a mouse and keyboard (although, having played the pc version, it's not so bad. The only big drawback is no analogue movement - which really adds to games like this)

Given the choice i'd get Warrior Within on a console (assuming it isn't a slideshow)

I got Sands Of Time on my GC, I'm pretty damn happy.

hehe me too - best version imo

(I tried it on the XBox and pc before settling on the GC. It has more vibrant colours and the best controller for the job :))

Am i the only one who thinks that Sands of Time is overrated and boring?

It was just this formula for the entire game

1.Solve jumping puzzle
2. Fight endless wave of enemies
3. Stab glowing sand thing
4. Watch cutscene
Repeat the process 13 times and voi-la, you've finished

It's one the first games to really have a sophisticated combat system.
Unlike Jedi Academy.

One of the best games I've played was Diablo (I & II). Now the formula in Diablo is:

1. click on the enemy
2. click on the enemy
3. click on the enemy
4. click on the enemy
...
200. click on the enemy
201. click on that item on ground
202. click on that item on ground
...
250. click on a town portal

repeat this process infinite times and you've got one of the best games of all times (in my opinion).

Its funny how alot of great games end up being really repetitive.

like Doom 3 :hmph:

The combat system wasn't that good at all.
Ever played Def Jam 2? THATS an awesome combat system.

Or Ninja Gaiden? That game absolutely rocks. I've been getting 100 hit combo's with nunchuka's for the last few days on only 3 enemies alone.

What's Def Jam 2's combat system like?
Ninja Gaiden kicks ass.
And it is spelled nunchaku...

Def Jam is by the same guys who made No Mercy on the N64 (easily the best wrestling game ever made :))

It's good, but No Mercy is streets ahead.

The combat system is basically a more complex paper, scissors, stone - and the best system for fighting i've come across in a video games (it'd work fine with any close combat/short range weapon style fighting )

Infact my 'dream game' would be a mmorpg using this fighting system. On top of all the usualy online rpg elements you'd be able train in many different arts/styles (fencer, wrestler, sumo, samurai, ninja, kungfu, knight - anything you could think of basically) and fight it out online. Add the ability to cater every move your character can perform (and mix and match as you learn new styles - a sumo, kung fu thai boxer XD) like in Fire Pro Wrestling, and it'd be even beter :D
