I really need help, havnt seen this problem yet

Ok first off I got this game for christmas, and managed to talk my way into getting it a day early. I went to install it today and the auto play starts i click install halflife 2 then the screen comes up saying its prepairing instillation. Then a box with this message pops up,"This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package." I have contacted them and the advice they gave me was stupid and a waste of time. I tried searching steam forums, knowledge base, VUgames support knowledge base and every thing I can find on the web. I AM STUCK, and on christmas even which sucks because this is basically the ONLY thing i said I wanted. So if anyone could please please please help me with this I would be greatful.

Did you buy it from the store, or download it from Steam?

If you bought it from the store, the only thing I can think of is copying the contents of the cd's to your harddrive, then trying to install it again.

It sounds like your dvd is corrupt. Take it to the store and they'll trade it for a new one.

If you bought it on Steam contact Valve for advice.

I feel for you mate, it seems you DVD may be courrupted as LittleB said above, get it back to the store asap and switch it, and try to have a merry Christmas!

I thought it might be a bad disk because I tried copying the disks to my hard-drive and was gunna install from there, but it gave me some odd error code about how something was wrong with the files and they couldnt be copied. Well looks like I have to haul ass to the mall, thanks everyone. Oh and merry christmas.
