Some familiar with MST3k may have been distracted, like I was, by the G-man's voice in this new video. He sounds almost exactly like Torgo, probably the worst character ever conceived and acted, from one of the worst movies ever made, 'Manos: Hands of Fate'. Torgo is the creepy/spastic/retarded hunchback with bloated legs (yes, that's his deformity: bloated legs) with whom a vacationing couple lost somewhere in the California Central Valley most lodge overnight. When he walks, a farty oboe ostenato kicks in--even several beats before he waddles into frame! The movie's that bad. Anyway, the actor (who--not making this up--rightfully committed suicide a few years after) chose to follow the Shatner/West/Goldblum school of acting by adopting a nonsensical speech pattern, and the result sounded only slightly different from the G-man here.
 
i doubt the G-mans AI routines worry about the legitamacy of his work. I can't imagine him saying "lovvie, get me a soda would you... you will, ah your a star."

hell of a lot better than saying male actor and female actor. i promote ette's and esses
makes it easier
 
here in north america its spelt "mom" :p as for the gman.. its a freaky voice :eek:

I have to admit I've never even heard of "Manos: Hands of Fate", let alone seen it. I actually quite like the G-man's speech- definitely a very distinctive style. You wouldn't mistake him for Generic Game Villain...

Just for the record, I say "Mum". Sounds a lot less nasal and annoying than "Mam". The General American "Mom" at least makes sense as a spelt contraction of "mother", but you might as well argue why you "Mamians" don't say/spell "mather" (or do you?! PLEASE TELL ME ESTUARY ENGLISH ISN'T GOING TO GRAB GEORDIE AND SCOUSE!! NOOOOOO!!). "Mother" is pronounced "muther" with my accent, so NYAH!

...and that's what happens when you take an A-Level course in English Language. You gain the ability to take any thread off-topic, although in my defence it was hardly the most attention-holding topic in the first place.

Seriously, what is this Manos film? When? Where? What about? I've never ever ever heard of it before, but if it encourages suicidal actors maybe that's for the best.
 
Odd speech patterns can improve a film or game character, but only if the actor is a good one...
 
It's mam here, but that's because the word for mother here is mama :cheese:
 
So all the same voice actors are returning......but the gman's voice sounds very different. In HL1 he sounded much croakier and older. I guess they wanted a slight change......I prefer the new voice style anyway.
 
What have you taken? Give me some of those blue ones!

I wasn't distracted by his voice, I thought it was great. He's supposed to be like that because it makes him seem really sinister in my opinion. And we know it's not just because he's a bad actor or anything like that - his acting was quite good in last year's performance. But this year's performance matched how he spoke in Half-Life and that was sinister too.

Considering the voice acting talent in the other actors, Valve would hardly condone having a bad actor in there unless he was supposed to speak like that.
 
Manos! To think the guy who played Torgo commited suicide not long after that movie was made *sad* makes you see just how bad the film was ;) Actually how bad the drug habit of the actor was along with his depression, anyway.

Bit MST fan here.....and yes G-man does have a sort of Torgo feel to him.

And I always thought it was "ma'am" though ......
 
American English is actually a more pure form of English than that soken in England itself. This is mainly down to the fact that when the pilgrim fathers went over, one of the main things they did was set out a groundwork for keeping their language 'pure', being in a foreign country n that :) Thus American English is devoid of the regional colloquialisms that plague the language here in the UK. Also, the spelling is phonetically more correct in some cases. There was a documetary on this 'History of the English Language' on BBC1 a few months back actually :)
 
Americans have loads of colloquialisms, mate. The regions are just bigger, that's all.

The Gmans voice is fine, I just hope they don't over-do it too much. He's only sinister when he talks for short intervals.
 
Still the language is more pure over there. The documentary was by some quite famous historian guy. Cant remember his name. There isnt as diverse a range of accents either and the pronunciation of letters is phonetically more sound.

Just as a quick eg, Americans would say o-ver whereas people here say o-va.

yeah, they were very strict in their education system about the teaching of english. good documentary.
 
You have no idea what you're talking about. There are New York accents, Texan drawls, Deep Southern twangs, North Eastern almost queen's english accents, and mixtures all between, plus I missed about a thousand out.

I've lived in 5 of the states and been through 40 of them, and moved over 10 times. I own that documentary guy. He lives in my basement and makes me smoothies.
 
First of all, who cares who speaks better English? (besides, New Zealand and Australia have it right :))

I personally am not a big fan of G-Man's voice, it sounds too "put on". Wht I mean it, no one actually speaks like that, which just gives you the impression that he's pulling your leg :p
 
In Belgium, (about twice the size of LA) we have 8 totally different dialects in dutch, and I mean totally different :eek:
 
OK, didnt realise you were qualified to talk about every subject, and rubbish what anyone else has seen/thinks.

And anyway, they dont have anything quite like the monstrosities that are Scouse or Scottish accents. Am I the only one who has difficulty understanding what Ali McCoist says?

Anyway i stand by my point that Americans speak a purer form of English than the English themselves.
