So I was in class today,we were talking about the freedom f religion and what not,So my my teacher starts naming religions..and then after naming a few he says:"Even though they say otherwise Atheism is a religion too, those people believe there is no god, thats a religion too."
So I raised my hand and said, that Atheism isn't a religion,we simply don't believe in god,and before I could finish what I was saying this Mexican dude gets up and tells me to shut up,and that he doesn't want to hear my "bs"
So I stopped talking...and the teacher didn't even tell that guy to be quiet. He simply continued with the class.
This is a Community College btw.

How the hell are people ever going to talk about religion if,that the kind of response "non believers" get?

your thoughts?

You should have just told him to get out of your face for expressing an opinion. He was hardly going to hit you with that many witnesses etc. Even if he did, boo-hoo, how can you know who you are if youve never been in a fight :p

Complain to the teacher, and if necessary his superior.

Just because some ignorant guy doesn't want to participate in active discussion, doesn't mean there should be a blanket ban.

I agree, athiesm isn't a religion, and therefore cannot be covered under the freedom of religion.

What point are you trying to get at?

Any way, bring it up with the professor. If that doesn't do anything, then I dunno. I know if that didn't help, I'd bring it up to the jackass who cut into my speaking.

Maybe he'd get pissed off and hit me. That would be cool.

My teacher went on a rant saying things like christianity is the "truth" and whatnot and kept saying he's angry that he cant preach the gospel to his students without the meany government stopping him. And said that he would gladly be fired for preaching the gospel to his students. He also said that since evolution has been taught at school is that it caused high teen pregnancy and other crime in America and crap like that and also insinuated that all non-christians are all drug addicts and whatnot and insisted everyone go to church.

And then he went on to say that Christians are being persecuted in America, and that the country needs to go back to it's Christian roots, which he think is true. But, then i said i was an atheist and that atheists are actually the most hated group in America, but then he disagreed with me and started saying something about Atheism being a religion.

So far hes done two rants about this, which sort of annoys me, especially since this is a computer class that has absolutely no connection religion.

I live in the heart of the Bible Belt and I only get shocked/confused stares when I defend atheism at school.

I can see people considering atheism a religion

the fact you are defending it can make it look like a religion

It's more the choice to not have a religion. And that choice WOULD be covered by freedom of religion in the Constitution, HL2Addict. We can argue interpretation if you want, but I'll win.

If I had been in Sidewinder's place that would have gotten hot fast, I don't back down from arguments like that

the very idea that it is a religion is ludicrous ..how can it called a religion when it's the absence of religion? There is no religious canon, no figure heads no cohesive group ..just individuals with their own convictions.

I find it hard to stomach that anyone would be bothered if someone was a non believer ...what do they say to jews, different christian sects, buddhists. muslims, Hindu etc etc ..or are they ok because at least they believe in something? I can honestly say that I have never encountered prejudice due to my non beliefs ...and I went to a catholic private school.

Wait... evolution caused crime?
...?
huh?
I thought that was satanism.

Hmmm .... I think I may have figured out the problem here.

I was thinking the same. I went to a community college for a year and a half and I met some of the stupidest, most ignorant people Ive met thus far in my life.

Also, Atheism is not a religion, and doesnt need to be protected. Its a choice not to believe something...

I did the whole dual enrollment thing my last year of high school. The stupidity was astounding.

I had a similar experience to the original poster with the atheism thing. I had the brilliant idea to write a paper on the hypocrisy of religion ... was far better than anything else handed in (we had to do peer reviews ... I haven't seen writing that bad since elementary school, the kids I tutor now can put sentences together better than these people). As you can expect my grade was less than stellar and she filled it with a bunch of bullshit, while some idiot that did a project on hurricane Katrina with a big picture of Sean Penn with a shit eating grin on his face did fine.

Holy shit ... this sociology class. I can't believe these people even got GED's. There was this one girl named Shanequa or some shit ... her baby daddy was a drug dealer. Hell, half the people in the room were probably drug dealers at one point in time. Anyway, one guy in the class had the audacity to suggest that crack dealers standing on a corner selling to a bunch of ****ing losers just might not be the most productive members of society. Holy God ... the shit hit the ****ing fan. The guy barely survived the onslaught. And the teacher, who was sitting behind the desk sipping vodka out of a coffee mug, didn't do a damn thing.

Basically, not quite the highest level of educational institution. If you want to avoid terrible professors and retarded classmates then you need to go to a real school.

QFT. Its probably more beneficial to no go to any college at all than to go a community one.

OP: my advice, beat the ****ing shit out of his ass. And while your doing it, mock him that he can't fight back cause he'll go to hell if he does.

Naw, that won't solve anything. I've been very lucky and haven't had any predijuce at all. Hell, I know more atheists than Christians.

You should've retaliated by telling said 'beaner' to 'sit the **** down before you got him deported'.

On a serious note, complain to the head of this teacher's department and the bastard will get fired. I blame him more than the mexican **** for having some god damn power and not doing a thing. Also a good point to make would be as a post above said to say atheism is not a religion since its choosing to not believe in something. If it was you might as well call not believing in the tooth fairy a religion.

I suddenly love Australia and its vaguely more intelligent population a lot more.

Hmm this sounds like my high school experience:|, and to make things worse that high school was named after a departed relative of mine that so happened to have the same family name as me:frown: . The only good thing was that probably 80% or more of them didn't give a shit about religion (or anything else for that matter:cheese: ).I can count on one hand the few decent people that were in my class. And all the theology teachers that we've ever had came out of there traumatized:LOL:

Wow, thats bloody terrible. I went to a Catholic school, and the fact that I am an Athiest didnt do me any harm whatsoever. In fact, I almost chose to do Theology and Philosophy for my A-Levels and the (Catholic) teacher was very encouraging, because its 'boring teaching people who all believe the same thing'.

I had the exact opposite experience.

I went to a catholic school for a few years, and I recall in seventh grade biology, I asked the teacher, "if you were to raise a baby with a gorilla for all its life, and monitor the child and gorilla, and their interactions, closely, would the child be able to communicate with the gorilla at some point in time?"

She promptly told me that "it was an un-christian thing to do, and that nobody would ever do it".

I said "but still, IF somebody were to do it, would it be possible for the child to communicate with the gorilla? That's what I want to know".

She replied "I really can't say, because it will never happen. It's an immoral in un-christian thing to do to a child", and then moved on to another question.

It would be a pretty immoral thing to do, though, wouldn't it?

I mean, if she had said unethical instead, would you had the problem? XO

What pissed me off is that she had completely bypassed my REAL question, by dwelling on insignificant obscurities in said question.

Hell, I could have done the same thing, and told her "well maybe they just take the child to visit the gorilla for 3 hours a day, and the parents stay with the child to make sure it's safe, and the gorilla's on some sort of restraint system, so if it makes a move on the kid, the researchers can kill it on the spot".

I wanted to know what would happen WHAT IF. Not whether or not the situation was plausible or moral.

This sort of stuff happens at school. I've witnessed it myself, too. Best thing is just to let it pass you by. By the way, you mentioned that one guy who told you to shut up was a Mexican, on that issue: Mexicans do seem to be a little more religious than Americans, or maybe that's a stereotype, I don't know.

When this happened to me, (talking about something else), I was so frickin' mad, but I got over it by just admitting to myself that these people were idiots and I was right, you should the same thing.

I personally don't believe there is a giant pink elephant stood on my foot? Does that make it a religion?

Why do religious types have such a hard time understanding that "Not believing in something" is NOT the same as "Believing something doesn't exist". I know it sounds insignificant, but the difference is important.
