If you look at the Episode Three trailer and pause at 0:44, isn't that an Ichthyosaur?

NAH I'M JUST KIDDING! Oh, you should have seen your face. It was all like :O

But seriously, if Episode Three is in the Arctic, a place which, legend would have it, contains copious amounts of water, this could be the perfect place for Valve to reintroduce the Ichthyosaur from Half-Life 1. Or, if not the Ichthyosaur, then possibly something similar, such as the "underwater bullsquids" that were found in the Half-Life 2 leak, or a new enemy altogether.

Either way, it's occurred to me that Half-Life 2 has never featured an underwater enemy, unless you count Barnacles, which I don't.

Do you want an underwater enemy in Episode Three?

I said yes, but I don't think there will be much water in Episode 3, it'll all be snow and ice.

Just because the borealis is there doesnt mean it is still afloat, as we saw in Our Mutual Fiend, it is wedged between two massive glacier/ice cliffs

To be honest, I've never really liked the underwater sections. I like the sinking physics, but the actual execution feels sloppy. Moving underwater with a gun pointing squarely ahead looks awful to me. And shooting underwater...

I was pleased that Episode 2 didn't feature anything more than the occasional underwater navigation. And considering the much-speculated arctic environment, I hope it will be featured all the less in Episode 3.

What I would like to see is another boat section. I totally adore the airboat in Half Life 2, so another water section (sailing to the Arctic maybe?) featuring new enemies would be awesome. Imagine fighting a huge, alien whale-like creature, or maybe an as yet unseen Combine marine attack vehicle.

You can only shoot with the pistol underwater...

Underwater combat sucks massive amounts of balls. As much as underwater enemies scare the shit out of me, I can't see anything good coming out of an actual ichthyosaur encounter. If one were to glide alongside some underwater window, that would be awesome, but actual gameplay? Probably not.

I think it'd be cool for ice-floe based gameplay. Imagine jumping from ice-floe to ice-floe, avoiding the itchyosaurs tipping them over from underneath like insane orcas hunting penguins. The water would be cold enough to be damaging, but not so much that falling into it would mean instant death.

The ice-floe idea sounds good. I voted no mainly due to the fact that it was the only option without teen angst grammar.

I'd perfer a giant squid-like critter from Xen or something. Or better yet, bring in the Hydra that was cut from HL2.

Archers. Take Narvi's ice-floe idea and replace ichthyosaurs with archers. It's a better alternative because although ichthys are larger, scarier, and pack more of a bite, archers are fast, agile, and can shoot out of the water. They shoot their dartlike teeth. It becomes a deadlier game because you're jumping around, trying to avoid their fire, trying to avoid not being blasted into subzero waters that can sap your suit's energy and your life, but it's balanced because you don't need to go underwater to fight them--you still have all your weapons at your disposal.

Imagine trying to fight an Ichthyosaur in the arctic...

You jump into fight it and next thing you know, your frozen to death...

Maybe we'll see the return of the little snowy simply which appeared in HL1, when the conditions are too cold...you know what I'm talking about, right?:|

Bah. I certainly don't miss underwater fighting.

And why are they icthyiosaurs? Is that what valve called them? They look nothing like actual icthyiosaurs.

I'd like to see a whale. Not a monster, just a whale. A little more real-world stuff would add some contrast. Make you think about what you are fighting for. Show us something that shows how the combine is weakening, we've beat up on them for three games and they just get better.

No, I don't think water combat would be too interesting. Besides, Gordon would freeze to death. Of course they could always say the HEV suit has a built in heater or something...

Maybe not an Ichthyosaur, but we really need an underwater enemy, something to make you fearful to go in the water. Cause once you've encounter it you would be on edge next time you go in water.I just need something to make me feel vulnerable in water.

I'd welcome a proper return of the old ichthy. I don't really see how they'd fit in the arctic, but you never know what could be bumped into along the way. It was originally intended to attack/kill the player in HL2 if they ventured too far out into the water, but that was later handled by leeches. Leeches, even alien ones, don't make much sense to me in freezing arctic water. An ichthy is a stretch too, but seems more "durable" for it.

And I hate the god damn ichthyosaur. On my list of game enemies I dread and fear, it is ranked at the top. I literally could not pass certain parts of Half-Life my first time through unless I closed my eyes and screamed while charging into the water. That scene where one jumps out of the water and swallows the scientist on the walkway above? I was stuck at that part for probably an hour, even after I killed the damn thing by taking potshots with my pistol out of the water.

So why do I want it back? Because I've never experienced that kind of horror since. Even if water combat was kind of subpar.

I think that jumping about on ice-floes would be awesome, but a part where you'd have to go into some below-water lab with windows, and then see one swimming by would also be cool.

Even better, it could smash through the window, try to kill you and start flooding the lab.
