Ichthyosaurs...

This may seem like a pointless thread to some and it's probably been mentioned before but it's just something I noticed.

When you first enter Eli's teleporter and you get bounced around one of the places you end up is underwater with an Ichthyosaur chasing after you. however, unless I somehow missed it they make no more appearences in the game. I thought they where one of the most challenging and in fact frightening creatures in HL1, and if they already had the model for it why didnt they implement them in the game? Just would have been an easy way to add something to the water areas.

I don't recall places in Half-Life 2 where there could have been an Ichthyosaurs. You may say Water Hazard, but it's used by the combines, so they would have probably killed them anyway. And sometimes there are things that need to be erased from a game, because the gameplay can change or for others reasons.

Well I've only played through the game once so my memory isnt 100%, but I do remeber several small water parts that would have been fine, and besides they could have made small changes to certain levels to add them, of course thats all up to them.

I thought it would have gone well in the mines after Ravenholm, but since you haven't found the crossbow yet, that encounter would have been very difficult.

Science name of "Ichtyosaurus" is Xenotherus Ichtycanthus ... its mentoined in hydrofauna laboratories in OpFor (part Crush Depth - many Xenotheruses in this level).

I think you can actually fight/see them if you wander into the ocean in the coast/ant lion section.

I dont think so...

No you can't. The ichthyosaur has very little AI, and will only lunge at you. It could have been in Highway 17/Sandtraps and they could have taken out the infernal leeches. And I'm sure if they tried hard enough they could stick in water hazard somewhere - the combine don't have an iron grip on the whole canal route. If they did, citizens/Gordon would never make it to Black mesa east.

I agree with Samon, even where there are combine there's always the occasional headcrab/zombie, and the combine dont really have any interest in going underwater, as they mainly seem to travel in the air. So I would say it's entirely possible they would have missed the odd one swimming about.

Exactly. If the combine had a full iron grip there wouldn't be resistance fighters, zombies, headcrabs etc. Unless the combine were taking swimming lessons :p

Ive also noticed that few monsters and weapons are not shown in the game. I think Valve saved these for Aftermath :>

There's a lot of things missing from HL2 ;(

This was one of my deepest regrets

Near the end of the game there were some large beasties moving below you as you transported by that body mover thingy. But you never got to play against them.

They will be in Aftermath.

They are Synths, the backbone of the combine army.

Yeah I must admit I was confused when I didnt come across the "hydra". I remeber in the pre-release video they made a big deal about water, but other than the airboat water plays almost no part in the game, I remeber HL1 had plenty of water sections.

I like Garfield's idea that maybe they're just saving some of the best for last, I hope so.

They didnt include the Hydra because it was absoutley no fun to fight.

I think they didnt put it becouse they didnt have time to finesh it becouse from videos I saw from the beta when it screwed someone they would **** up and the body will be stuck in mid air.......
but when Hydra mod will get out we will see how unfun was it....
I personaly miss bullsquids and houndeyes...

No valve stated in raising the bar it was no fun to fight and killed you instantly. The hydra mod will include a Hydra that is different to the one valve intended to put in hl2. AI wise

the answer to all of your question. First things first, remeber that theres 2 versions of halflife 2. in the first one ( not released), the ichy and hydra were implemented in the story, but they sucked out the fun and made the game a horrible game, thus they remade the game completly from scratch (released version) and discluded ichy and hydra.

Well, the Ichthyosaur wasn't actually implemented in the story and niether was the Hydra, it merley had a chapter built around it.

No, they didn't re do the game from scratch. At all. They went through the same developement procedures as most games do, they changed the story dozens and dozens of times.

They built quite a few chapters to do with one of these stories but none of the levels were actually any good (lacked gameplay, take the manhack arcade for example) and did not have textures. That does not make it a game.

Very little has actually changed from the leak and these changes weren't made after the leak, it was before.

The only reason the Hydra was taken out was because it was no fun to play against (which i said a few posts up), the Ichthyosaur was taken out because they did not finish its AI.

Ravenholm was scary enough without those things in the mines <el Chi runs screaming>

I can maybe see why they took out the Hydra, I dont see how you would have killed it anyways, but I dont see how the itchy could "suck the fun" out of HL2.

During HL1 I pretty much ran through the game without much thought or planning, except when I came up to a section with an itchy, unless you want to be fish food I found you really had to plan what you where going to do and how to do it, I just thought they where the best enemy in HL1.

I would have liked that air exchange level thing... with all the snow... and the borelias... yum yum

Maybe someone could do a MOD with the Original storyline

Actually, you are very right. You had to pic the right kind of gun to use and then how you were going to kill it without it getting you first. I kinda missed it in HL2. :(

But, I know this has kinda been cleared up, but the ONLY play the ithy is at, is in the beginning. Because... In Garrysmod you can spawn it(commands) and all it does is sit there. It has no attack animations and also has no death animations.

But Doom3 is moderatly scary, but Systemshock2... I stopped playing on the 2nd level if that tells you anything. (first level not including training, which was the best part in the game:p)

It has ALL the animations including movement and attacking.
But iValve never finished coding the AI for it so they ocded it to attack you only when you are in front of it..

You can spawn one in the main game and if you walk up to it's mouth it owns you with full attack animations.

Yeah, D3 was scary stuff. Less so towards the end I felt, but Hell looked amazing.

Ravenholm was freaky, but would've been good to add the icthy for variation @ the end. :bounce:

Wouldn't it be cool if they made an Icthyosaur synth? then they'd rule land, air & sea. :borg:

errrr... I think that might be a little too much for the average player to handle, but it would be funny!
