id software working on new franchise

The fact they had to explain what commander keen is makes me want to kick someone in the teeth. Prefurubly one of the people who had to have it explained to them what commander keen is.

What's commander keen?

*bounces away from bob marley on a pogo stick

Hopefully it will be better than Doom 3... Though I honestly can't wait to see what John Carmack has up his sleeves this time!

The Dooms?

LOL.

They need to make a great Single player experience again.

I want to play a new Wolfenstien or something. Shooting evil ****ing Nazi's never gets old. With like th most ****ing epic graphics. Like shadow nazis with flames, embers, and FEAR fire coming off of them while they shoot at you in a 'don't give a ****' stance with their MP50's or whatever while in the most crypt-like hallways. I think I typed myself an erection. With DX10 texture resolutions to make your current PC beg for mercy and then die in a puff of firey smoke.

"...it's not even Commander Keen"

Well then I don't care.

Since I dont feel like starting a thread on it... anyone know where I can find the doom music from the NEDM ytmnds? I needs it so I can change my windows startup sound to be something not lame.

This was announced about a year ago....

I was thinking the same thing while reading it. I remember that too. I guess they still don't want to show anything yet, but things must be heating up or they wouldn't be so tempted to speak of it.

Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important - John Carmack

Carmack = great at making engine technologies, but lousy at making games.

That is a real quote.

Also, a new franchise eh? What does it matter if their stuck firmly in some kind of time-warp that makes them think we're still in the gaming world of some 10-12 years ago? Sorry id, but I'm just not giving a shit after that Doom 3 travesty.

I don't think megatexture was made especially for Quake Wars, it might be an RPG :D, afterall they already did a bit of RPGism by doom for your mobile

REally? It wouldn't shock me. Someone made an RPG full conversion out of the Doom 3 game. It has potential. I love their style. Imagine an alien or demon real-time RPG with the Hell level from Doom 3- beyond cool IMO.

,and Nazi's.. more Nazi's.

I thought Doom 3 was a great game....please make another Doom game, and put the main character on earth, so all the demons can invade, and you can save the world...that would be my game of the year.

This was announced about a year ago....

true, they asked John a quetion on how many engines are you going to right before you retire ? answer: 2 more engines.

they need to make Hell On Earth, that would've been crazy.

If thats a real quote iv lost even more respect for ID.

And would you say the same thing about Nintendo? They seem to have a fair number of very popular games that are all about gameplay over story.

And in any case Carmack has shown plenty of interest in story as evidenced by Orcs and Elves which is the last game since Quake 3 that he has had anything to do with beyond tech. The story and world in Orcs and Elves is based off of his D&D stuff he did as a dungeon master: http://www.orcsandelves.com/storybook.php

His comment was an observation on literally what seems necessary for a game, not on his own preferences. Clearly games can and do get by just fine without much of a story, so that seems to be true. However, that doesn't mean that's the direction Carmack personally wants.

Pretty irrelevant because Carmack wasn't putting gameplay ahead of story; heck, he doesn't even understand how gameplay should work. The gameplay of Doom 3 is shit. It isn't just story, it's about gameplay. If there's anything id lacks (other than a writer, that is), it's a game designer.

meh not at all interested ..just another showcase for a new engine. They excel at game engines not games

and what's the deal with making another new engine for the game? Can't they just use the Quake Wars one? Doom 3's engine was a failure and now he's making new one. Id sholud focus on gameplay for once.

Couldn't be more careless.

man all you are a bunch of whiners. First off, the DooM 3 engine was definately not a failure. Secondly , why does everyone here keep saying DooM 3 is shit? Oh no the a.i. wasn't perfect (let's keep in mind that you're fighting against demons and zombies not humans you fools). Story being shit? I can somewhat agree on that but it wasn't THAT bad to say it ruined the game.

Gameplay bad? Yea ok there. I thought the gameplay was excellent with a few things that could change (all games have this) like the flashlight incident which there is a mod for. All of the really interesting and informative Video CD's and PDA's were cool. Going into Hell was an awesome experience.

I guess DooM 3 only appealed to the original DooM fans.

I enjoyed the original Doom, but Doom 3 was just very boring to me. I mean it wasn't scary to me. It seemed like an average shooter with tons of scripted events. It seemed to set out to be a scary shooter. Doom1,2,F on the other hand set out to be a run-gun-kill-nonstop-action shooter and did great at it. Which is why I still play the Doom, Doom2, Final.

Don't like ID games, but the engine kicks ass and is far from a failure.

No one is disputing that ID make great game engines, but Doom 3 was a lacklustre game. Complaints.. well aside from the flash light BS (I don't expect modders to have to fix game flaws..sorry), I'd say the monsters on the ceiling only in the cut scenes was a total rip (never occurred in game play..), as were the 'this rooms clear..oh noes!!!' secret hatch zombies come out behind you cheap attempts at tension were 10 on the lame-o-meter. Gabe Newell in one interview said something about how with HL and HL2 Valve try to ensure that the game experience doesn't cheat players in anyway, in that if the player dies it is there fault rather than as a result of deviousness on the part of the game designers, Doom 3 fails in that respect.

It's not a flaw it's a feature - part of the gameplay.

Flashlight mods are cheats - not fixes.

I beat the game many many times and besides trying out a couple flashlight mods, I never used them or even liked them.

I'd say the monsters on the ceiling only in the cut scenes was a total rip (never occurred in game play..)
Thats not true. They can crawl on the wall and the ceiling, and you can shoot them while they are there. What version did you play - the Demo or beta? I replayed some of the levels in Doom 3 like 10-30 times, while testing my mods, so I know what I'm saying. There are many places when you shoot at them on the ceiling and walls. IIRC Delta 4, alpha 4, Administration, and a bunch of others I can't remember where I was though.

Also, when modders create new maps they can specify if they want crawlers.

There was even a beta mod where they guy made it part of their AI to decide to jump up on the walls and attack you from there.

Also, the cut-scenes are rendered in real-time - not movies. Just wanted to be clear - I'm not sure if thats what you are saying.

I like it. Of course after you play through the game, and know where monsters are - it isn't surprising any more. It's hard to name any Single player games thats "surprises" don't get old after you've seen them once before. It kind of goes against the definition of 'surprise'.

Like a lot of people, I expected Doom 3 to be the best game ever made, and I don't think anything could live up to that much hype. I really like this game, and is one of my favorites, but it fell way short of my expectations.

I really like playing around with the game, and adding things to make the game new or different. Modding it is fun.

lolz, no that is not my face. Mikael_Grizzly made it....dunno what he used for his reference or anything.
