id's Todd Hollenshead Talks New IP

I hope it's what the original Quake was supposed to be.

What was that?
I'm pretty sure it was going to be a fantasy game. I read it in Masters of Doom.

From the Quake Wiki page:
It should be noted, however, that by the time the game was released the specifics of the story had become relatively unimportant and somewhat disorganized. This is mainly due to a last-minute mix of two different game designs - John Romero wanted to make a dark fantasy hand to hand combat/RPG hybrid game while level designers Tim Willits and American McGee wanted to make a more futuristic, Doom-like game. Ultimately the Doom-like mechanics were implemented and many of the dark fantasy design elements were incorporated into the graphics and visual effects of the game. Some fans claim the chaotic and ominous design compliments the chaotic and violent gameplay while other players find it sloppy and incoherent. To most multiplayer "deathmatch" players, the various environments simply provide interesting spaces for gameplay.

Perhaps not though, since Romero is long-gone.

All they need to worry about is RTCW2 - the rest doesn't matter.

"We're going to be using this super-sweet portal technology, and ummmmmm...O SHITTT"

I've got no intrest for new Id games.

Why don't you wait until you see what the new IP is before bashing it. Okay?

I'm excited to see what they have going, and even more excited to see what John Carmack has got cooking. :)

I think iD should stick to making and licensing engines and stay out of the game biz. Doom was pretty but not fun. In fact, I can't think of an iD game that I've liked recently.

IP? Is that the new word for "engines?"

ID are great at making engines, there are so many games that still uses the old Quake2 engine as a base.

I.P. is intellectual property, like Doom or Quake.

The only way to make a successful engine is to use it on your own game and then you will be able to know what needs to be changed in the pipeline and stuff.

Doom3 engine wasn't that successful, so thank god they didn't live off of the licensing of just engines.

I've got to know: is it pronounced ID (eye-dee) or "idd" software? Because in that ET:QW vid the guy kept referring to them as "idd' software... which is beyond lame.

Recently their games have become more tech-demo's than anything else but in Carmack's recent keynote speech he mentioned that:

"id Software will be focusing on gameplay over graphics in their next unannounced title."

Right...that's what they were saying each time before a new game was released. "This time we are focusing on gameplay".

I'll wait to see this new IP before bringing down the axe on it , but i'm really not holding my breath.

I WANT THE 2nd PART OF THE CARMACK VIDEO!!!

SAD FACE :(

That is correct. Reason being that they are sort of doing what they want to do :)

I love it when software companies have names which have a much better meaning if you know what it means!

Only in the last few years has id's company name meant the psyche. Originally it was ID which stood for In Demand. It's probably a coincidence that they chose id as the name and now they're exploiting the meaning.

I liked Doom 3, new IP should be good too. Hopefully something more science fiction and futuristic like Doom 3 but with less horror and demons and more story and gameplay features.
