.. What happens next? Action by the United Nations? United States? Total indifference?

I think the answer also depends on if we're talking about RIGHT NOW, or in the next few decades or so, of which by then China will have gained considerable power.

lol wut? peaches?

edit: but that's also assuming bush will still be in power decades later... Or you talking about now? Cuz I don't think China will do anything until after the upcoming Olympics, hosted in Bejing.

I think the answer also depends on if we're talking about RIGHT NOW -- I stopped reading here, tbh.

Still, after what's happened over in Iraq, I don't think the American people would want to invade another country for a long time.

Invading China would be a very foolish idea, not even Bush is that stupid.

Could anyone actually stop China if they did that?

I sincerely doubt there would be a world war just to stop China from invading Taiwan. At most some nations will send in peacekeepers to get in the way while others negotiate a cease fire which eventually would evolve into a standstill in hostilities. They'd use diplomacy and persuasion to get China to back down.

Try to imagine an ant colony taking over a few grubs, and we are like a praying mantis.

That's basically the same.

I don't think China would want to screw up all the good relations they've finally built with other countries. If they invaded Taiwan, everyone would cut off support.

The U.S. owes China billions of dollars in Treasury bonds. They basically funded our Iraq War. If we were to try to stop China, they'd ask for their money back and we would be very screwed.

Actually they probably wouldn't. Because if they ask for all there money back they are going to end up loosing money.

We owe a lot of the world a lot of money. They don't give us to much shit about it, because they are gaining quite a bit of money. The United States must pay off interest on our national debt. They are getting paid interest money, and will continue until we finally pay off our debt. Not likely until we are out of Iraq and theres a democraft president and democraft majority congress.

In other words, that would be retarded because they would end up loosing money because we would no longer be paying them interest.

Overall, if China invaded Taiwan there would be huge economic sancations on China from the entire world. Taiwan is a democracy, and the U.S. must stand up for any democracy. We have gauranteed that to the world. If China invades Taiwan and we do not stop them, China would be considered a bigger superpower than the U.S. by most of the world.

China won't try to invade Taiwan until it completes its modernization and military build-up, which looks to be pretty damn soon, actually.

What would giant Chine want with puny Taiwan anyway? Coal? it's a tiny dirty country.

I don't even see that happening with the democrats, because I don't think the democrats plan to completely withdraw from Iraq, except for Dennis Kucinich, (he's running for president). And anyway I think I heard during one of the debates that the democrats plan on using the money not being spent in Iraq on universal health care. So don't plan on that happening anytime soon.

Oh, and you can't forget the impending war against Iran, and possibly China...

The only presidential candidate who would actually start getting the U.S. out of debt is Ron Paul.

Republicans and Democrats both want to spend a ton of money, just on different things.

True, I'm speaking theoretically. Suppose China asks for their money back anyway interest or not, and the US is either unable to pay back or refuse to pay back. Their bond rating would go down (US has never failed to pay back bonds), and no one would buy a US Treasury Bond anymore.

Communist China invading Free China will have dire consequences on the Eatasian regio, even destabilizing the fragile balance of powers in the sector. I say we, the free world, should preemtively strike first.

If china attempts to invade Taiwan, there will be no 2008 Summer Olympics, I guess.

Taiwan belongs to China from the very beginning. US shouldn't give a shit on what we are doing WITHIN our territory.

lol China is so big.
No it doesn't. If the people want to live free then let them,.

I know you're joking here. If every Chinese soldier had only a kitchen knife, they would still win a war.

People of the world should live free or die hard.

So if the people in Scotland want to live free we let them? If people in Utah want to live free, we let them? If the people in Ontario want to live free, we let them? This is the most ridiculous separatism I have ever heard. Taiwan was under our reign and so she will be.

Taiwan hasn't been "under your reign" for 60 years. It's a free, independent country.

Well, Taiwan is a small country, and really, I don't think the UN is going to bother to take military action against China unless the whole freaking world was in on it.

China couldn't defeat Taiwan, they have very little capability to launch an offensive across water. Their Air Force and Navy are shite, and they would never manage to land enough troops on the island. Taiwan would hold them off indefinitely with their superior technology.

With Taiwan's case, it's a little different. The original government of China fled to Taiwan. For a while, Taiwan was recognized as the official China. Well, not anymore -- it's not officially recognized as a country by most of the world anymore, but they still treat it as one. Instead of an American Embassy there's an American Institute, which is the same thing.

Taiwan has its own army, government, economy, and borders. China would have to take the island by force for it to be actually part of China.

Interesting trivia: Taiwan has a bigger population than Australia. (23 million vs 20 million).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020

The People's Republic of China has stated it intends to take back Taiwan under Chinese rule at latest by 2020. The country is also predicted to become the world's largest economy by this time.

Looks like it is going to happen. And China will be the strongest country in the world.

Right now that's the case, but China is rapidly progressing in military technology and will probably overtake Taiwan's military standing in less than 20 years.

China also has nukes; Taiwan doesn't. And recently I saw a Taiwanese news report about a spy satellite spotting the construction of a Chinese Aircraft Carrier.
The best that Taiwan will be able to hope for is to hold the Chinese invasion off until international support arrives.

China would not be able to nuke Taiwan. The country is so small, it would be completely wasted, as would their effort and in my opinion their precious nuke [would have been wasted].

If china decides to nuke Taiwan (Unlikly) it would most likely be as a demonstration on their nuclear capability.
