Surely Valve are aiming for a pre-xmas (November) release of HL2. Nothing like Xmas to sell an extra coupla million copies around the world.

Also, I was thinking maybe they will release post Olympics. Everyone's feeling good, and want something to do after watching the box for 2 weeks straight.

I'll believe the release date when I've got a boxed copy in my hands. However, I don't mind waiting for as long as it takes for HL2 to be as perfect as it can be.

Remember it's the beta not the full product. The beta is only for CS:CZ/CCP owners, so it doesn't look like they expect HL2 to be released earlier.

I mean why wouldn't they let HL2 players try it? Unless they will be going for that simoultaneous release, then of course it will be delayed

In the CS:S forum, there's an interview (translated from Korean) with Valve that states that beta testing will begin in two weeks and will last for two weeks and that CS:S will be on Steam within 2 months.

The most interesting information in today’s exhibition is that the beta-testing of CS:S is approaching soon. The CS:S beta for CZ owners is merely Valve's reward to CZ owners for not sitting on CS and for giving Valve more money. Of course, if CZ gets a few more purchases, Valve will be delighted but I don't think thats their agenda. The beta will finish in one month's time which would mean that CS:S should be ready to ship in Mid-late August. If such a focus is placed on CS:S, then HL2 must be pretty much complete, or at least certain to be done by the time CS:S goes gold. That way Valve keep their August Gold 'promise' (it wasn't a promise, more of a hope) and we'll get the game in early-mid September at the latest. Which is still summer by the way.

So all you Anti-Valve "THEY LYED TO US!!!11" people can now shut the holy **** up now. Thank you.

The thing I fear most is that once I get my hands on CS:S, I'll feel that my purchase of CZ was totally obsolete. I don't see any reason to play 1.6 anymore now that I have CZ (at least I didn't pay for 1.6) & will definitely feel the same way when CS:S comes along. That's why I feel sorry for those who will buy CZ just for CS:S because they'll buy a great game that they'll probably never even try.

I guess I won't feel this way if CS:S is crap but I doubt it is :E

besides from what merc said and crossing that with what valve says, HL2 is further along than CS:S. really it seems valve is stalling, maybe vivendi has put a hold on HL2 release till a certain time to boost sales, and valve doesn't wanna release HL2 on steam first cause it'll piss alotta ppl off.
