If the critics had their way...

lol suicide42. Im sorry if im annoying :( i dont mean to be.

its interesting comparing what younger & older people thought of this game. I'm 28 and played the original doom when it came out and I was blown away by it!! It was after doom that fps became my favourite genre.

Now Ive played alot of fps since then and each good one always added something new. Doom 3 however did not (besides graphics) I found the whole thing boring and repetitive. This review here sums it up for me http://www.somethingawful.com/ (funny the reviewer is also 28)

Maybe it is an age thing and the youngsters today just look at the graphics because i dont know how you could actually enjoy this game. oh well i'm hoping hl2 can restore my faith in game developers.

More interaction with NPC's, for example i loved that level where you follow the scientist in the dark.

Maybe a few more scripted sequences like when you first met the Pinky Demon.

And less use of whole "demons teleporting behind you" and "Demon's hiding in secret walls" nonsense.

Also, maybe having the levels less linear would've been good as well. Like that level where you choose either the route with darkness or the route with the light. I love those levels

And i was hoping for more "mind-****s" if you get me?
Like everynow and then, the lights go off and there's evil laughther. The first time it was creepy, the second time it wasn't as creepy, the fifth and sixth time i knew it was gonna happen and i hated it, it was lame.

I heard that the demons would really mess with your mind but there's only 1 instance in the whole game where that happened at that was the bathroom scene. That caught me off guard and creeped me out. But thats as close as i got to being scared.

I was expecting more stuff like meeting a survivor and following the guy around, and doing a task for him, like say...fixing a teleportation machine... and then for the guy to turn around and say "Thank you, that really helped US" and then for him to laugh evilly and morph into a demon and then the lights in the stage all go off and you start hearing a bunch of shit going on. That would've been really really creepy. But it never happened. Of course, i knew something like that would never happen, but i always assumed something just as creepy might. Nothing like that did.

Couldn't have said it better. Spot on.

I think the sad thing is Doom3 could have been a great game with a handful of changes like these.

I think one thing id seemed to forget: this isn't 1992 anymore. Things need to change to become better (in these types of games least), but the only thing which changed was the graphics.

I just hope and pray Valve know this isn't 1998 anymore as well. HL can be used as a road map, but if HL2 is just a prettier version I think we're all going to be mighty upset.

i love this guys review of doom 3 http://www.somethingawful.com/ totally sums the whole thing up for me.

LMFAO. I always love SomethingAwful.

As previously mentioned, "Doom 3" is a very dark game. Despite the fact that it's the future and you're in a highly futuristic industrial complex that manufactures highly technological machinery, the only portable source of light you can find is a 99-cent K-Mart flashlight which spent the last week repeatedly falling off the back of a pickup truck. One of this game's most awesome gameplay features is the flashlight juggling physics which revolve around constantly switching your flashlight for a gun or your gun for a flashlight.

if you've got the flashlight then you are defenseless but can see what's killing you, and if you have a gun then you can defend yourself but you can't see what's killing you. Sure you know that your health is being gnawed away by a plastic spider of some sort, but you are unable to locate the exact position of this spider due to the fact that the lights are all out and every time it hits you, your character spastically flings his head 180 degrees backwards like a retarded child after licking a tazer.

And I totally agree with Sparta, that's why I loved Half-Life, it wasn't REPETITIVE! And the part where the marines shut off the lights and knocked me, I loved it.

Imagine HL2 was just a remake of the original HL on the source engine? how would u feel? Personally i would be totally pissed off and feel cheated. A bit like my feelings for D3. Is d3 the best version of doom? theres no doubt it is. Unfortunatley game ideas are not like fine wines and dont get better with age! they get old, stale and tiresome. Like doom 3 .
HL2 isn't being advertised as a remake of HL. Doom 3 was. I don't see why you should be pissed off. They said they were remaking the original game, and keeping the same gameplay elements. Doom 3 was exactly what they said it would be.

'doom 3 was exactly what they said it would be'

what? a dull, boring repetitive game as is the original now if you care to load it up. My point is games have become ALOT more sophisticated in the last 15 years. Like many others i was expecting a remake of the original with some new elements added in ( see spartas comments he makes some good points)

maybe because u havnt been subjected to the same story over & over . the same gameplay over & over . the same wepons over & over. the same settings over & over for the last 15 years it might seem good to you. Its funny i would have thought younger gamers would have been more demanding having experienced more sophisticated games but it seems not....strange.

Hehe....for interested parties I'm about 19.
I obviously was a little on the young side for DOOM when it first came out, but I still had my own epiphany when I finally got to play it. I've always been a pro-gameplay not graphics advocate, so I know that doesn't really apply to me (although I do think the lighting in D3 added something).
I've got a question for ukfluke: did you like Serious Sam or Painkiller?

Don't be so presumptuous.

I am 17, and my gaming experience started with Wolfenstein 3d. I may not be as old as you, but I have been playing games for a very long time. I don't need a bunch of glitzy features to keep me entertained.

I've been playing FPS shortly around the time of the original Quake. From my experience, no game has deviated from the typically FPS genre. Not even Half-Life (if anything that added a bunch of jumping puzzles to the standard action). I haven't seen a new weapon or gameplay mechanic since I've started playing first person shooters. The weapons have stayed the same, the story has stayed the same, the level design has stayed the same (for the most part), everything has stayed the same.

Crucifying Doom 3 because it follows those same elements is wrong. You should be railing Half-Life and HL2 (most likely) because it will follow those same elements as well. I suggest you give up first person shooters because they will not be changing anytime soon.

hey direwolf. I liked serious sam i really liked the humour in it & enjoyed it more than d3 but it didnt come with the hype d3 has had. I've not played PK yet altho i think it looks alot like doom/quake i think i got bored of that kind of game after quake 1. What do u think of PK?

recently i loved playing COD nice variety in locations & missions, great sound & graphics and really immersive atmosphere..really feels like your in ww2 :)

COD is one of my all time favorites, exactly because it is so immersive. I liked both Serious Sam and Painkiller. I can appreciate the fun in running around killing lots and lots of stuff.
An interesting point: I have a lot of people over my house frequently who are not part of game community and dont have decent computers. They've all been absolutely fascinated by DOOM3, much as people originally were taken in by DOOM. Theres just something about it. :D

so blahblah u think quake is the same as COD or Goldeneye? well i dont :p

Fundamentally they are the same exact thing. Sure the environments and graphics vary, but they nearly have the same gameplay mechanics. Though I haven't played a really good FPS in a long time. Maybe the FPS genre needs to take a break and get some new idea.

COD is good, but I am more of a Goldeneye man myself. :p

ok blahblah we will agree to disagree on them being the same. If i was handing out scores COD would get 90%+ while d3 gets 65%. :D

Heh, you talk about Doom 3. Call of Duty is the same on a rail experience as Allied Assault. The games are almost carbon copies.

Doom 3 bleh

Last boss is amazingly crappy and easy.

The game picked up for the last hour but that does not make up for the amazingly boring and repetetive gameplay, YAY find the PDA!!! ohhh look hidden monster rooms with monsters just popping out when i either get some health or i walk beyond the room. Yay imps behind the doors so they will jump out at you! like that wasn't over used in the game? And what made it worse is that because you where always in a 3 foot wide drab grey corridor they would always hit you.

Yay let's use some of the best monsters 3 times in the game and over use the imp and zombie combination. Pinky deamon? Burn zombie? Chainsaw zombie? Don't even get me on the flying bags of crap the cocodeamon which when shot would fall down like a let off woopy cushion.

Physics? What physics? Oh yes that horribly unstable piece of mess. Proper mass representation? Pft let's throw that out of the window! A stable solver? Throw that out of the window! Just make sure nothing lands on a uneven surface otherwise the engine is screwed! Justmake sure you don't knock the barrels they wont lose the energy just transfered and will just wobble for eternity.

AI! But ^Ben you say zombies don't need good AI because they are dead! Yes sir Watson but they should be able to navigate a room without becoming stuck on objects, and should be able to get to you when you are in an elevator or standing in a doorway.

Story line ..........

Multiplayer ....... As we can see with the major bug that is present within the multiplayer at the moment which should of never got past bug testing.

Level design. Dull bland and boring, I swear the whole base is 2 bathrooms and 5 offices and 3 special rooms all connected with an endless supply of 8 metre long corridors.

General WTF. You are in a highly futureristic base and there is absoloutley no way you can attatch a flashlight to a gun? Sentry bots, theese little things kicked ass why did'nt someone deploy them all when the invasion started? Why did'nt Swan deploy them?

I'm done for now.

I've played the HL2 squad command, I diden't like it very much...

COD was good, but it was way to scripted, it was like a train ride.

CoD gets 45% in my book I'm afraid. It's godawful.

I liked it a lot personally. Simple, yet very effective. Easy point and click.

I think DOOM3 is an awsome game both SP,MP. I just finshed watching DOOM3 latest MP movie and OMG this game has many features to get your head blow up BOOOOOOOOOOOM  .

I think id should have scrapped the really pretty graphics and just filled the screen with monsters like in SS, Painkiller or more importantly, in the original DooM. Then it would have been a true re-make.

I really don't care about the "best computer game graphics ever"!

shadowfox i never pld any WW2 fps games before COD so cant really comment. But i do know i really enjoyed COD all the way through. D3 got really tedious for me after a couple of hours. everyones diffirent i suppose!
