WHat will you do then?

Feel free to discuss this subject..

Ill wait for the box release.

What im more interested in is what Fragmaster will say if the Steam release is on the 30th but the retail one is delayed?

EDIT: Just realized that post made me a combine. W00t!!

I'd just buy it on Steam and then get the boxed version when it's cheap.

i just want HL2, i dont mind paying for two versions, think about it, 2 cd-keys

I'll buy it on Steam IF the price is that much different than the $50 tag at the store.

"I'll Wait with great pain Till the stores will have it and then buy it from them(ARgghh The pain!!!)" I choosed that option.

Hopefully, it'll only be top 5days after the 30th it'll be released.

If there is no UK release date announced, or that release date was more than a week away I would buy it over steam. Even though I suspect the servers there will be massively overloaded in that event.

Box version only. Screw Steam (even though it works fine for me). :p

I really dont see why would i want to get the box..
Actually the steam id(ea) is very appealing to me..
less money and i dont need to get out of my house to get it.

I'm getting the boxed version. I like manuals and CDs and such.

Although I mainly just like boxes.

Ditto, I don't want deal with downloading it over Steam; what a friggin' headache. Steam only has about 1575Mbps total bandwidth and earlier this week I was pulling 1.3Mbps myself. And I know there are more than 2000 people out there that want HL2 that could probably go as fast or faster than that. What that boils down to is either slow download rates, inabilities to connect to the network to even download, or some type of queue(sp?) a la Fileplanet/Fileshack. No thanks, sounds like their gonna have the same problems they did with the Steam non-beta release.

Edit: What would be really terrible is that regardless of when/where you buy HL2, all the servers will be so bogged down that you won't be able to verify your copy to play singleplayer. They better just gut the need for an internet connection to play the singleplayer portion before they release it or a lot of people (including me) will be very angry if this were to happen.

when u think about it - it will be very wrong if valves do it..
its a really nasty trick dont u think?

Well, if it happens I don't think it's because that's the way they want to do it. The only reason I could see this happening is if the 30th is rolling up and they know the retail versions won't make it to the stores by the 30th, but they want to have the game out for the 30th in some way because they said it'd be released then. So then it's not in stores, but they still technically released it, just on Steam.

i dont trust steam, and never will, i'm only gonna buy something tangible, not a download. Steam is just something valve made to make more money. Think about it... they're gonna sell it to u for the same price, but if u buy if over steam, the middle man has been removed meaning more profit for valve

I'm scared of steam. I downloaded a 120mb or so video file from it of half-life 2. and it put a freaking 600mb cache file on my hard drive! What does this mean, why does this do that? I have 10GB a month of bandwith allowance(premium bandwith though), and if I download a 100 MB file on steam, its gonna use 600mb of bandwith on my reserve!!? Or taking up 6 times as much space on my hard drive!?

You should add the option of downloading the cracked singleplayer for free whilst waiting for the multiplayer to hit the shops.

I maybe shouldn't have said that.

I would get it from Steam... if it's available on Steam and no retailer has it around here yet, there's no question...

I think Steam sets apart some space on your hard drive that it's not even using yet. That way when it updates in the future it ensures that you have the space available. It's just a safeguard.

I'll buy off Steam for sure if that's the first way I can get my hands on the game. It's been working great for me, and I'm sure Valve will have a good system set up to ensure they know you've bought the game. They've even said that they might be able to organise the shipping of the box and manual at a later date, so that would be cool.

Plus, haven't they said that buying it from Steam will be cheaper than buying in-store? I'm assuming this is due to the reduced costs in packaging, etc.

i just hope i can get my hands on a copy to try it out and see if its worth getting.

never liked the idea of buying software without trying it.

id prolly wait to see how far apart the two will be released then get the box if its within 2 weeks, i also like the cd and manuals etc. i hope the collectors edition has a mouse pad then ill get that(need a new mouse pad)

afraid of natural light, are we? :p

I'm going to get the Steam subscription, then when the Collector's edition comes out, i'll buy that. I can't imagine that the CE will come out after the holidays, so i'll probably pay $10-20 on the subscription, and then maybe $100 on the collector's edition (Communal Toilet's post.)

Buy the box. And be VERY POed at Valve. (Now, if its "Boxes are being sent, but in the mean time, its available on steam" no problem. if its "Buy on steam! We're holding off on the box release for 9 months" then I'll be VERY POed....)

Just as long as the game is released at about the same time on the box (5 days or less), I'll be happy. Longer than that and I'll be going to the local hardware store to buy me a crowbar... :cheese:

I'd probably STILL wait to get the box....I don't want steam crashing on me when HL 2 is 99.95 percent done....

well, i wont buy it thru steam, i dont trust this system to pay it

Get the subscription, then cancel when it hits stores.

I preordered HL2 retail in July so I'm just going to sit tight and wait for the box to crumple it's way through the small letterbox on my front door.

Then you relise you have to stay on the contract for like 3 years.
and no new games come out from valve.

Isn't there a way to subscribe on a monthly basis? Pay $10 or whatever a month and be able to play HL2, HL etc.?
Cause if so I will do the subscription deal for one month, then buy HL2 retail whenever I can get it without any trouble.
I just want to play HL2 THE second I can.

Hopefully when you pre-order the site you're ordering from will tell you which version you're getting!

its been said a hundred times but here it is again

Gabe has previously stated that the steam versions and retail versions would be playable on the same day.

i would get steam but i don t have a credit card so i gotta listen to all this crap about "muhahahah steam will ownzor retail" and try not to go fooking balistic.

:flame:

I don't really trust the retailers to have it on the 30th, but trust Valve to have it on Steam then. I'll do as many have suggested and get a subscription for one month, then wait for my retail copy to arrive before cancelling it
