How would you feel if he'd killed your sister, or wife, or daughter? You can't assume you can "deal" with him yourself, because the question says "free". Free means free. There's no beating up a free man. Assuming he's moved to another (unknown) country or taken another identity and you can't track him down, would you really want another person suffering the same as you had?

My parents were killed when i was a child by people i don't know. Don't you ****ing lecture me buddy.

edit: <3

Guilty man go free, then hire an assassin.

AND FREE THE PRECIOUS MAPS!!!!

I'm hardly lecturing you. Which would you rather do given the above situation? Would you sacrifice the freedom of a man you didn't know or let the killer roam free? I mean free, not free so you can beat him up, because it defeats the point in asking the question.

As with any hypothetical situation, my answer would really depend, particularly on the level of threat the man is to society. I'd easily let a drunk driver or thief walk free, but a murderer or rapist...

Free the guilty man. There's just no way I could let an innocent man's life and reputation be ruined.

You're changing the question.

It's clearly about a guilty man where you don't know his crime - otherwise the crime would have been stated in the question.
i'd put the innocent man in prison , from a purely sociological perspective this descision would have the least impact on our society as guilty criminals are more than likely to reoffend. so it would be better to put an innocent man in prison with little or no social consequence than to let him loose.

From a sociological perspective how does imprisoning the innocent typically affect their behaviour after release?
There's certainly a chance that their experiences in prison would criminalise them.

I'm not changing the question. I'm challenging the answerer. I.e. would you change your opinion if you knew they'd raped a child.
