This demo is a much better example of HDR:

Unfortunetly it only works on DX9 ATi cards. Sorry nVidia owners.

uhh HDR is a DX9 feature, the demo you just linked to is an OPENGL demo from the RAGE128 days

Home >> Developer >> Sdk >> Rage128sdk >> OpenGL >> Demos >> PearDemo >>
....
also it clearly says what technologies the demo uses
The Pear Demo demonstrates a variety of visual effects including gloss mapping, specular mapping, mirror reflections
...

no mention of High Dynamic Range Rendering.

you should download the ATI chimp demo. Its quality and I can proudly say my PC runs it without even the slightest sutter! :)

Oh and that first benchmarking prog is real niiice!!! :D

But the cards and the demos themselves are optimised to the gills for running superbly.

Calm down bud, I just posted the wrong link. Here you go:

http://www.ati.com/developer/demos/r9700.html

It's the "Rendering With Natural Light" Demo. It's an updated version of the one I posted. The reason I felt it's a better example of HDR is because it shows the image with and without HDR in split screen. So you get a better idea of what effects HDR actually contributes.

Downloadin' it right now. Just a couple more minutes... GOD I <3 having broadband now, lol. :cheese: :cheese: :cheese:

OR you could just play a bunch of games that have that feature already, like Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia

HDR rendering is just a PR tag invented by Valve that you fell for. Ha. Ha.

But, you can't denny its still quality!!!

OMG, I sooo want a game with all this new tech to come out like tomorrow or sumthin! I want to play a awesome game again. I am fed up of repetative shooters!!!

That's pretty nifty...

I too thought those were HDR effects in Splinter Cell, but the folks over that the official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. forum set me straight. Slinter Cell had an "out-of-range" effect for lighting. Meaning that in certain areas that the light was too bright, it was displayed as pure white with a soft edge surrounding it. These out-of-range areas were pre-programmed into the actual maps. So they weren't exactly "dynamic".

The difference between this method and that of Half Life 2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is that the engine can actually calculate the average radiosity (or these averages are specified in the actual map) of a given area and determine what light levels are out-of-range and what isn't, just like human eye. So any light source that appears too bright will be totally white with soften edged protruding from it, and what appears too dark will appear black with soften edges protruding into it.
