IGN Goes Hands-On with TF2

Hopefully this preview is as good as the L4D one.

EDIT: Not so tantalising but still a good preview nonetheless.

I guess we'll have to see.. I'm still in shock over there being no conc grenades (although I do agree with the removal of normal nades).. :*(

Oh my God. This game looks more amazing by the day.

September something'th can not come soon enough.

You mean Septemberish can't come soon enough? ;)

Man, I can't wait for this shit :D

The screenshots in this preview were phenomenal. That first one, namely, with the soldier rjumping up to the battlements as another rocket barely misses him; and the second one, where you can see actual dust and cunks of wood being blasted off the bridge's railing. Attention to little details like that awe me.

Also, critical hits. Critical hits. Why am I the first person to mention that? Lemme just say it again, CRITICAL HITS. 3x damage affected by player performance? Ooh, I am SO gonna love that.

As for price, Valve says it will all be free. "We have no plans to do booster packs for ten dollars," says Lombardi. Walker went on to add, "We've never charged for any extra content...We want people to be glad to be a customer of Valve."

<3 for Valve.

I can not believe how much they've nerfed the medic. I mean sure to promote aiding your teammates is good and all but to restrict the class to only be able to do that seems over the top. At least give him a bloody shotgun instead of the stupid baseball bat, he can't have two melee weapons for christ's sake. heal-ray, shotgun, bonesaw that'd be a good combo for the medic.

I think the opposite, the medic sounds like he's been pumped up to overkill now. Come on, 10 seconds on invincibility for you and a friend? That is enough to nuke their entire base. A medic HW team plus a medic demo team would nuke the enemy base.

Don't forget Dan, they have medics too. It makes the medic important, but dependant on other classes.

What's the cooldown on the invincibility? It better be a once-per-life thing, or something to that effect.

I do agree on the invulnerability effect. 10 seconds is an eternity in a fast paced game like TFC, unless TF2's gameplay has been slowed down to an almost standstill I see this feature failing bigtime.

But what I meant with nerfing, is his offensive/defensive ability. Now he's basically almost worthless on his own. To have to rely on others for your protection is not what I want in a game, I want to at least be able to hold my own. sure you might be able to take down one opponent during your 10 seconds invulnerability with your bonesaw.

I mean unless you're a 100% altruist, medic is not going to be very fun to play. which will mean very few people will play it.

I guess we'll see after a while. They'll have to upgrade him afterwards to make him more independent, I'm sure of it.

He doesn't. They were just referencing the scout's bat as also being a fun melee weapon to use. The medic has the syringe launcher as an offensive weapon and only one melee weapon: the bonesaw.

yeah somebody needs to learn to read before starting to bitch...

I can't wait for this!
Used to play TFC endlessly (for a while at least); much more fun than CS IMO.

Nice one Valve...

It's a sodding medic. I havn't played TFC much but to me medic sounds like a bloody support class.

We'll have to see how this pans out. I'd be very much at ease if I knew they'd be bringing back the special secondary grenades for each class tho. Those hardly homogenises the classes since they were all different except for the scout and medics with their concgrenades. To counter that let the medic keep his conc and the scout keep his caltrops.

I'm going to try and mail Valve about this, asking i they might consider adding this after release, don't want to pospone the release any further.

I'm sure a lot of you can agree with me on the special grenades.

Each class could have at 1-2 of these in their inventory to avoid spamming.

for those of you unaware of the special grenades for each class they are as follows:

Hwguy - Mirv (one large grenade that splits into 6 smaller ones, quite lethal and spam-friendly so a maximum of one of these should be allowed. From what I gather the demoman has this in the form of a dynamite bundle)

Demoman - Mirv (In TF2 a dynamite bundle)

Soldier - Nail Grenade (jumps up to waist hight and starts spinning shooting out nails in 360 degrees)

Pyro - Incendiary Grenade (Burst into a napalm explosion setting the ground and anyone caught in the radius on fire, as well as anyone who steps into the fire)

Medic - Concussion Grenade (anyone caught in radius gets blurry and wobbly sight for a few seconds, making it hard to fire straight. Also used to push the medic and teammates in so called concjumps)

Scout - Caltrops /drops a number of caltrops slowing down any persuers and causing some damage)

Engineer - EMP Grenade (releases an EMP blast, rupturing any explosive devices etc. so Soldier, demoman, HWguys etc. are very sensitive to this, can do lots of damage to a newly equipped person)

Spy - Gas Grenade (Gas causing damage as well as distorted sight and hallucinations, explosions going of near you, that sort of thing)

Sniper - N/A (sniper never had any special grenade only regular grenades, what might fit him would be a flashbang grenade)

All these previews are so great... Where's the freakin' pre-order though?

Yeah, total agreement on the special 'nades. Hell, if they feel they can justify teleports it's ridiculous to hamstring gameplay here.

I bet they tried it with grenades and didnt get the feel that they wanted. maybe not but im sure that they have put plenty of thought into it. I'm sure they definitely expected the immediate negative reaction to nade removal so they probably arent going to reconsider their choice.

im sure

Pretty much.

I'm sure most people are vastly underestimating the amount of testing Valve does.

...Wait a second.

THEY TOOK OUT GRENADES?!

Heh, I'm pretty sure I've been "testing" the TF scheme longer than Valve.

And I'm pretty sure Valve knows what the hell they're doing. Robin is clearly not an idiot - he designed a game that you've been playing for the past decade - so there's no reason for you to doubt that TF2 is going to be anything other than fun and very teamwork-centric, especially considering the buzz from previews and interviews.

Past performance is not a guarantee of future success.

I still have faith. :D

And change is not a guarantee of future failure.

:|

stanr seems to be wanting TF2 to be terrible. So they changed the game some. So what! Try to be optimistic. Or don't get it when it comes out. We've heard all the forshadowing criticism. We'll know how good the game is soon enough. ... well not soon but eventually. :(

Bad analogy. Warren Spector did not make Deus Ex 2. He gave it to another team.

Good analogy.

It's true that a guy named Harvey Smith was heading the development, but
"It's more like I'm just trying to make sure they stay on track..." - Warren Spector. He was hands-on in that project.

Also, Harvey Smith worked on Deus Ex 1, and worked with Warren for "at least ten years." He also had an excellent track record.

I have far, far, far more confidence in Valve's guys, and I do think they will produce a fun game. I just won't automatically give them a carte blanche and blindly believe in the greatness of everything they will ever produce. I used to be this way (like Stigmata is now) for a few years after HL1 and TFC, but then I found HL2 to be a lot blander than HL1 was, despite all the cool new stuff, and I realized that they are human and can make decisions that ultimately suck.

But, like I said, I want _more_ TF and not less TF. And I object to flattening of the classes to their basic roles. I believe that staying power of the likes that TFC enjoyed can only come from versatility and choice in the style of playing each class. So yes, I want more grenades and more side-effect weapons. But that's my opinion, feel free to disagree.

We aren't blindly praising everything theyll ever produce. We have confidence in TF2 from the information that was been given to us. And its not necessarily going to be less TF, its going to be a different TF. They took out what made the classes similar and added to each to make them more unique. They're now focusing more on the T, something that will dissappoint some and please others.
