If I was caught in the middle of a war zone, with bullets flying past and explosions hurling shrapnel in my general direction, I wouldn’t stick around to look at the pretty lighting. I’d run like hell. In the opposite direction. IGN are obviously a little more reckless, because when they were entrenched in the battlefields of DoD:S, they took their camera! [br] [br] Click here to read IGN’s preview of Day of Defeat: Source. It contains quite a bit of new information, such as the four maps that will be included with the September 26th debut:

  • Avalanche,
  • Donner,
  • Flash and
  • Anzio.
[br]

****
[br]On top of that, there’s ten new screenshots to gaze at, and they look absolutely stunning. For an even bigger treat, click here to see 14 different videos taken from in-game. Just from glancing at these media pictures, I can already tell that DoD:S is going to be explosive. Only five more days to go!

omg the videos are awesome, much better looking game when in action :bounce:

in before 10 pages

they are the same maps as before - huge they are not ^^
i'm actually quite disappointed - it doesn't look as polished as CSS at all

not polished? i think it looks brilliant! maybe the 320x240 resolution is affecting your judgement?

edit:

btw am i crazy or did IGN mix up dod_flash with dod_donner?

That looks incredible. The HDR effects are awesome!

One Odd thing though, I noticed in the video there is no map in the top right hand corner. Is this really gone in DOD:S?

It's toggleable.

little bit disappointed

I preordered the game out of curiousity and old-times-sake.
Too bad this review says very little about which improvements have been made for gameplay. In fact it looks like it's the original dod with a graphical update. Something which was badly needed, but I am still hoping for more because the old gameplay has become very "gray" and outdated IMO.

If snipers will still be able to shoot very accurate without using their scope is such an example. Other arcadish elements such as strafing very fast etc. have lost my interest too (I must be getting too old for this  ).

I will have a few hours of fun with it, but will it stick for more then that ?
I sure hope so, but I doubt it.

Monk.

It's an arcade WW2 shooter, what'd you expect?

I agree with Monk. The preview wasn't that helpfull, but thats just because the writer isn't a DOD player, so he doesn't really know what has changed.

Unless Valve have let someone preview it that actually knows DOD we'll just have to wait and see. :(

looks ten times better than what i saw a few months back with a beta testing video (looked identical to hl dod)

Very impressed with the screams also :). The models look very well done but i hope they improve the textures on the allied model cause they look kind of blank compared to the dod originals :afro:

Ding Ding Ding you win! That's why it is DOD:S not DOD2. They did quite a bit of gameplay changes for a port anyway :hmph:

On the other side of the spectrum is the heavy machine-gun which requires players to click the right mouse button to set the thing on its supports while on the ground or in front of support like sandbags or window sills in order to fire with accuracy. Once in place, it's devastating but if players get caught without the gun set down to fire, pulling the trigger will bring the barrel of the gun straight up into the air. Not a good place to be when there's a gun running at you with a shovel screaming something about David Hasselhoff.
I love you too, David! :D

Graphical improvements don't change the fact that these are the same old maps with the same limited "point captured!" gameplay.

Be nice when HDR is added to the SDK so some fresh mods can make use of this tech....

Everything looks really nice...
But i miss the ability to lean, at least while you're crouching. Is that too much to ask?

When did dod have leaning? Ive played it off and on from its beta days until it went retail, i dont remember it ever having a lean feature.

Looking great! I can't wait to play in it's full glory at 1600x1200 with HDR! :naughty:

However there's always a thing which bothered me in DOD is the crosshair. I really can't stand it. And they haven't changed it... Hopefully there will be a way to change it in Source

I don't think it ever had leaning... nor do I think it ever should have leaning.

I never said DOD had leaning... :dozey:

I said i miss the ability to lean.

I LOVE Source... but why no source game has leaning, and why climbing stairs seems so... stupid compared to other games?

Damn, looks amazing!!!

Thank god they decided to update the graphics in this game, the movies look incredible.

looks stunning ...but 4 maps? ..if I had never heard of DoD and saw the box at retail, there's no way I would shell out $20 for a mp game with only 4 maps .....hopefully Valve have plans to add content within the first month or so

Screenshots are great, movies are uber but the review... hmm we already know how DOD works!

How many maps do you actually play on multiplayer games? Usually, with me, I have about 3 or 4 favorite maps, and I just look for servers that are hosting one of those. I tend to see the other maps as simply boring and infirior, bottom-of-the-barrel stuff.

Not only that, but VALVe put so much intricate detail into all of their maps. Look at CS:S- the levels are beautifully sculpted, with subtle effects everywhere you turn. DOD:S will keep up this level of of detail plus more, especially as the maps are a lot bigger, with countless nooks and crannys.

And if you're still not satisfied, VALVe have stated nemerous times that there are many more maps in production :p

I agree ...but that's usually fan made stuff ..most mp only games come with at least a dozen maps, while admittedly not all are good but 4 seems kinda low

well I paid for it almost a year ago so I have no choice ...but if it takes as long as it did for CS:S to have new maps I can see my interst waning ..I'm sure the majority of DoD:S buyers have played those 4 maps a zillion times ..I know I have ..and I've only been playing DoD for a little over a year now

"Everybody retreat! Go play HL DM and unite as one!"

I guess im just the weird person who thinks that this is perfect. They hardly changed the gameplay (still dont like the iron sights though), and I love the point capture gameplay. It makes for the perfect clan game. With the source engine though, I would be VERY surprised if the game doesnt change drastically after release. I expect to see dozens of maps made by both VALVE and modders, new gameplay types, new classes, skins, models, and I dont think that pacific theater levels are anywhere near out of the question. With the source engine pacific maps can be made easily, even if VALVE doesnt do it. DOD:S has a great future.

I've been playing dod since it came out in beta and have enjoyed it very much the entire time. I really enjoy getting on a server with a friend and putting some bullet holes in a few heads. The biggest problem I ever had with the game was the limited number of quality maps offered. Yes there are some good ones, and obviously the 4 most played maps made it into the new source release, but can't someone come up with a few new maps that offer the quality of game play of a map like avalanche? I mean come on, I must have played that map easily over a hundred times, maybe over 200, and I know there are people that play way more often than me. Sure you can say that you usually only play 3 or 4 maps with MP, but does that mean that you're happy that the same 4 maps you've played to death are the only ones available? I believe that in order to really make DOD: S reach it's potential there needs to be at least another 4 or 5 "quality" maps made available. Otherwise, it's just going to feel like the same old DoD in a couple of weeks, and that would be a shame!

I agree with you efuxer69.

But Valve !!!WILL!!! release new maps for DOD:S... Just like they did with CS:Source. When it came out it had 6 maps I think? de_aztec, de_dust, de_dust2, cs_office, de_piranessi & cs_hanava... They added 4 maps, de_port, cs_compound, de_tides & cs_assault. And they're working on de_nuke... They'll do the same for DOD:Source trust me.

Awesome videos. I see they reworked the first person weapons models. The Thompson looks a lot better than in 1.3. (the beta 1.3-3.1 Thompson looked better too).
I've been playing DoD since beta 1.3, when the garand was a rail gun, the kar was slow, and there was no recoil system.
