IGN's Top 100 games of all time

half-life and half-life2 only ranked # 22 and 28 respectively

I think I've only played one game in the top 10: starcraft ...some of the choices are just strange ...sid meirs Pirates in the top 10? is it that good?

This list would be controversial since is based on their opinions, they put Chrono Trigger as the Best ranked RPG, and I agree on that :E

Go Mario \o/

Nice to see SF2 make the top 10 too. No game has ever blown me away as much as Streetfighter did when it first appeared in the arcade. For those who can remember back then, the leap was HUGE.

SF2 jumped at least 2 generations, and for the next year the rest of the world was playing catch up.

(see sig :))

Sid Meier's Pirates! was the bomb when it was released for the c64 (or whatever system had it first). The recent remake adds too little to the original and basically feels cheap, and pretty soon, boring. I'm going to assume that the game on the list is the old Pirates! judged for its time.

Indeed a lot of strange (and injustifyable) choices on that list. "crimson skies"? Give us a break. The list stinks "we love consoles" (nothing wrong with that, it just renders the list completely irrelevant) so the only conclusion to be drawn is that games should be ranked by platform and genre. Mixing super mario bros. for the nes with half-life 2 just doesn't make sense.

.bog.

Zelda is no.2. That game is the best! Totally worth buying a n64 for. Such a class game. Infact, I'm gonna get my old n64 and buy a new powersupply unit thing for it cos its broke, and get that game going again!

well yes ...imho HL2/HL are the creme de la creme of fps games

i think their opinions suck, i mean, Final Fantasy X getting a better place than Final Fantasy VII? wtf were they thinking? were they on crack or something? And Crimson Skies getting a better place than both of them? this list is utterly ridiculous
I mean, how does Mechwarrior 2 only get spot 65? the game was revolutionary and kicked off the entire mech genre, same with Rainbow Six, the game only got spot 98 when it created an entirely new, and very popular genre that's still around today, besides being a kickass game

Well, they did say that they're both the highest ranking fps games on the list (despite Deus Ex being higher than HL, but they probably consider it an adventure or something...)

What's with this mentality that console games inferior to PC games, and as such should not be included on a list of the greatest to come out? Yes, there are a lot of console games on the list; there are also a lot of PC games on the list. Also, old games can be just as much fun as the newer games; not all age well, but some do. How does that not make sense?

havent played alot of these games so cant comment really too much on it, metal gear solid in the top20 is good, hl and hl2's position are pretty fair i think....

I ain't checked it all but i know i'd disagree anyway.. FFX is higher up than FFVII...

I doubt there's a soul alive who agrees with them.

I doubt it to, FFX is a pretty bloody good game i've gotta' say, but FFVII offers and gives so much more than FFX. Only thing better that i can think FFX has it voice-speaking, but again, some would disagree with that because a true RPG should be in text so that the person playing can imagine up the character by themselfs...or something :p

The voice acting in FFX was horrible. They should have at least got good voice actors or stuck with text bubbles.

#27 Burnout 3? It was fun, but IMO it doesn't deserve the spot. Deus-Ex and Half-Life should have both been in the top 10.

# 002 // Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Bought a N64 the other day for a £10, guess I'll be picking this one up.

Mmm, I'm glad God of War is on the list. Where the **** is Unreal Tournament?

Its considered as a role-playing game; I always considered it as a FPS.

UT was always a poor mans Q3 ;)

I'm suprised HL didn't make the top 10, but don't think HL2 deserves it.

That wasn't a top 100 list, it was just a list of games from different eras haphazardly put together. I mean come on, putting Shining Force 2 near the bottom and Breath of Fire 2 not even on the list? Both of them should be at least 30. And what is up with Super Mario 64 at #5? Don't get me wrong, it was a good game, but it wasn't that good. If anything it should be in the 70's or less. IGN sucks.

of the first 10 I played: starcraft,super mario 64,tetris(who dosent),and I think street fighter 2

and I hav to say that is good to see this games here cuz really games so old like that are the roots of gaming and every gamer should not miss the chance of play them

I think Super Mario 64 deserves in the top 5 (it's the most 'perfect' game I can think of)

Horses for courses :)

The list is pretty much crap, I completely disagree with it. I mean, you can look at great games that got ranked badly and then take a few that were even in the top 10 ... I bet you the editors truly couldn't look at you with a straight face and say that Pirates! or Tetris is better than MGS. Games shouldn't be rated on how good they were or for their time, but how good they are now. You don't see anyone comparing silent era films to the Godfather because "for their time, they were good." Eventually there will be a standard medium and games won't progress very rapidly, and then you can fairly compare them no matter what time they were released. But the fact remains that games today, for the most part, are better than old games.

But whatever, doesn't really matter, it's just another one of those stupid countdowns that serves as a cheesy way to generate traffic.

I've just skipped to page 10-1 and I swear if halo is no 1...... ! ......

Thank god for that super mario.

# 024 // Tecmo Super Bowl WTF!

ive been playing techmo super bowl lately. its one of the few games that survives the test of time completely. hella fun playing 1v1 with a friend

You've never played Mario or Tetris?

It's not a bad list imo, a few niggles but they got some things right. Dues Ex is better than Half-life imo. I dont know why Theme Hospital isnt on there... or Monkey Iseland, but still... it could be worse :) Halo2 is nowhere in sight.

That's a huge call putting R:TW at 14- it is an amazing game- good to see it being recognised- just not sure whether its 14th best ever made.

That really shocked me as well, especially considering that IGN picked HL2 over Rome: Total War for 2004 Game of the Year. Such a huge change in opinion in such a short amount of time is a little suspicious - I think all lists like this have one or two items that are just meant to be shockers and generate more traffic.

This list is just... ridiculous in my opinion. It's impossible to define the top 100 games in order. It's possible to define the top 100 of each gaming platform, because there's a much more streamlined opinion, but with a topic so broad as "every game, ever"... it's just a matter of opinion.

Also, ICO is the one above MGS. What the crap. It's not even that good. AARGH this list is annoying -_-

The list is pretty crappy; I only think some of the games deserved their places.

It totally revolutionized 3D gaming. There's not much else except it combines two of the greatest concepts together. Mario+3D graphix=gaming revolution.

ff 10 .. err, switch that for 9, or 8 even.

omg, Return Fire & mechwarrior 2 ..

so many good games/memories ;_;

as much as i love Super Mario Bros, it didn't deserve #1 and why wasn't total annihilation in there, it kind of revolutionised rts =/

No Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry? Quake II was beat by Virtual Tennis.
IGN's Gamecube fanboy, Matt C. is really an annoying guy.

Pffffftt, UT was so much more than Q3 could ever be.

And when i learnt that Zelda: OoT wasn't No.1 i was thinking "yeah, well its IGN for you" and then i saw that Super Mario Bros. is no.1 and that made total sense.

I agree with the top 10, but not much else.

And yes, Tetris and Mario easily shit on MGS. So does Ico

OK I can understand Zelda being high ranking, as with Starcraft and Metal Gear Solid.....Wait a minute....Fallout is 55?! No Operation Flashpoint?! What the?! No Marathon?! Marathon is one of the most important FPS ever created! It added friendly AI and the ability to look up and down!!:flame:

No Operation Flashpoint?

BLASPHEMY!!!

I argued with a shitload of those. Personally, it's all their opinion, I mean, a few got their right spots "Starcraft for one" I mean, others really didn't deserve it....but oh well..whatcha gonna do?

Oh dear.

1. MRS PAC-MAN IS NOT BETTER THAN HALF-LIFE.
2. TETRIS IS RUBBISH. NO, I don't care how fun it is. It's not better than HL, Rome:Total War, Deus Ex...I mean honestly.
3. Civilisation 2? Bored.

I agree on many of the choices. Zelda, yeah great. But this list was clearly composed by a man wearing supremely thick rose-tinted spectacles. Games like Mrs Pac-Man and Tetris are NOT brilliant and classics. They're old and rubbish and sure, good for a five minute laugh, but not even as good as a merely average third-party PS2 game of today.

Tetris is not a classic? Tetris? Tetris?

Are we talking about the same game?

Zelda:OoT deserves #1, imo. It's really just revolutionary, although I really guess it's not because so few games have actually adopted its combat system.
