Just like Epic is famous for doing with the Unreal series, I'm betting that the elusive MP that everyone is bitching about will show up a few weeks, months after HL2 is released...I for one really wanted a real HL2 MP (I mean come on, the manipulator gun in a City 17 MP Map would be too cool)...and I think Valve realizes that it's important to have that aspect of the game eventually...I'm also of the opinion that if it had took them longer to complete that section of the MP, it would have delayed the game even futhur, which I think we'd all agree would suck pretty bad...

I'm still not convinced that it would be feasible to have the manipulator in MP, physics complexity usually has to be cut down quite badly for MP. IT would be nice though :D.

Maybe maybe not who cares hl2 = best thing ever.

yup, unfortunately.

Well Gabe was saying once that they can move some physics stuff to client-side, so that only an object's xyz position really needs to be sent down the line. Of course it's more complex than this, but I don't see why they couldn't put the manipulator in.

I hope the single player part lasts long enough while we wait for a good DM.

because if it were client side, it would be pointless

yeah you could pick up that garbage can and throw it at someone, but it wont be broadcasted so it wont affect him.
his client will reproduce the action, but not exactly.

client side physics interactions are things that do nothing (small objects like cans and bottles)

however if they could find a way to implement it, it would indeed be very impressive.

I still find it hard to believe there's no MP , but who knows i think that if it's not released as a surprise it'll be released sometime later hopefully, maybe it took much work too be finished on schedule or they tried to do something too revolutionary and they found that actual internet couldn't handle it very well so they had to scrap it. There's something quite strange about there not being any MP besides CS:S

Since there is going to be so many MODs, maybe they decided just to work more on HL2 and leave the MP to MOD makers, like..whats the name..SvenCoop ?

I'm not a programmer, although I'm very familiar with game technology and techniques...can someone clarify for me why physics (manipulator gun) would be such a big issue?
I just don't get how it couldn't be so difficult...

I just hope that they will put the best DM/TDM mod on steam, so everyone knows of it and people will all stick to one DM/TDM mod (assuming someone will make it). Otherwise you would have the whole DM/TDM community playing different mods wich isn't good for the community.

I don't think they will release it in a bonuspack.

If there's enough interest, I'm sure they'll find some way of charging us for it.

but DM sucks and with no maipulator fights whats the point in hl2 dm?

valve were sensible imo

DM doesn't suck, you just dislike it.

I play ut2k4 alot and I only play tdm and dm (and very rarely ictf), if they released the game only with dm and tdm it would be fine with me. It's a mather of opinion. I like the timing the power ups, controlling the map so you get a maplock and than make sure I make more frags than deaths.

DM is more exiting than most people think, you just need to see it somewhat competetivly, in ut2k4 if you want to spam all around yeah go play onslaught, it's there for n00bs (not saying everyone playing it is a noob, but most are).

I love deathmatch

They might, IMO

but it might be awhile though.

Huh? How is choice and options a bad thing for the community?

Because everyone would split up. If you have 1 supported by steam DM/TDM mod everyone would play that and it would not be hard to find a match.

If you have 100 DM/TDM mods and not 1 would be supported, well everyone will just pick one and you will have not that many servers for it and really low amount of players. So not a good thing, imo

So rather than say the neat HL1 crowds of NS, DoD, CS, HLDM and TFC you would have them all unite under one "uber MP" game??
EDIT: And just for the sake of you being able to choose from 3000 servers and not 1000? Shame on modders! Down with ideas and innovation!

Uh-huh...

edit: Preserved for hilarity - "Shame on madders!"

Uh look at the world. There are currently thousands of mods, and most of them die off think about it for a second.

/edit To the man who said Onslaught was for noobs. "Find some good player, not those pre-schoolers you bash in Deathmatch"

Ah sorry for that outburst, but you insulted one of my pass times.

Valve really got f***ing lucky with CS, and now we are doomed (pun?) to have them pimp it forever - as if they came up with it in the first place...
