I hate the damned things. Had a friend who had one by acer that didn't last very long, now my ViewSonic, little over two years old, seems to be already in it's death rattle. WTF? Only two years?! :flame: The warranty from Tiger Direct only covered one year, no wonder!

It all started when it wouldn't come on after Windows booted without first hitting the sleep key to put the PC in standby first, then hitting wake.
Now it seems to be going out at random when it: ~in a whiney voice~ "get's too hot! Ohhh!" (bangs on pussy ass monitor)

I'm pretty certain it's the monitor now, hooked my PC to two other different monitors and I have no problems with it "blacking out". It seems to overheat and blackout when I play Oblivion too. It's not the game or the PC, because I played for hours on a friends monitor with out a single hitch.

Anyways, I'm boycotting ViewSonic and ALL LCDs until they stop sucking. Which is never. Sony's trinitron CRTs have much better color richness and crispness that rivals LCDs. Plus, they last MUCH longer overall. I don't give a crap about saving power or space anymore either. CRTs are better. Period.

My ViewSonic LCD monitor is a piece of shite. Literally a piece of feces. <end of rant>

I've had my samsung crt for well over 5 years now, it runs without a hitch. To hell with LCD.

I've yet to own an LCD monitor.

I've never had a CRT monitor fail. I get bigger and better ones every 5 years or so, but even that monitor I had 21 years ago still works.

I'm hoping they soon start rolling out the latest greatest technology that will replace LCD, because I plan to skip LCD.

BTW go with Samsung. Sony Triton is the worst shit I've ever seen.

I've got a Samsung LCD close to four years now. Haven't had a single problem yet.

Poll time for LCD lifespans? I've had mine for a few years (three or four?) and it's still working great. (Apple Cinema HD 23")

Have fun with your unsharp, hugeass monitor. I'll be here, content with my LCD that is still running fine after three years and still as sharp as it was.

I agree, CRT is a lot better picture and performance than LCD (minus the obvious size/weight disadvantages). Although I doubt so many LCDs are taking a shit at 1-2 years. My samsung is like 4-5 years old. But then again my 2 CRTs are 8.

Your issue might be related to the DVI signal. I know some GPUs and some LCDs are not 100% compliant with the spec. Of course CRT monitors don't really have this issue. So old and perfected. hehe

My ViewSonic CRT is still going pretty strong after 4-5 years or so, however long it's been.

Never used an LCD before.

Had my Belinea 2485 S1W since February.

She's beautiful.

I have a samsung at work that has worked without issues for 2 years now. A few dell monitors, some over 4 years old, with absolutely no issues. The only LCD monitor I ever had break was a 19" viewsonic that broke after about 5 years.

Acer and ViewSonic are cheap and shitty brands and everyone knows that.

This.

My LCD has lasted about 4 years now without any problems. Well it did have a dead pixal that took about 20 minutes to fix. :/

I have an acer that's been running well over a year now and another that I've had for about 6. We'll see, no problems yet.

uh yea...no ****ing duh. Every single warrant ever made is designed to work like that.

That said, I've only bought viewsonic and have never had a single problem, the one I'm looking at now is going 5 years without a single issue.

I've had 2 LCD monitors, my first one an Acer brokedown before a year it was a real crappy one. But my Samsung i've had over 2 years and i love it and not had a single fault with it. It's not fair to compare your cheap ViewSonic against your Sony CRT, if you buy cheap then don't complain when it fails.

Cheap? That s**t wasn't cheap though brah. I paid like $480 bucks for it.

The very best CRTs currently available aren't even half as much.

First off, a preemptive apology for the double post. I wanted to bump this thread to "today's posts"

Would going to VGA make much of a difference in image quality? I might try using a VGA cable to see if that resolves matters any. BTW, a have a dual-SLI/GPU 7600GT 256MB video card(s).

LCDs 4 lyfe. Never going back to those clunky pieces of shit. I wouldnt be able to dual wield my monitors if they were crt. Plus I live by a rule: Never trust something you cant punch a hole in.

*Hugs Sony FW900*

It may be heavier than the sun, but there isn't a better monitor for gaming :)

My desk will not support the weight of a 20 inch CRT, so I am content with my 700:1 contrast ratio Samsung LCD that I've had for around two years.

It is pretty well known that early LCD monitors and TVs had relatively short life spans.

My LCD monitor has lasted 4+ years, and this new one for my newer machine works fine.

Perhaps electronics just hate you.

Hahahaha no. Good luck comparing that to a 30" Dell LCD.

I'd take the pepsi challenge against the Dell any day of the week. It may have an extra 6", but handling motion (a big plus for fps), contrast ratio/black levels, picture clarity and quality would go to the fw900. A resolution of 2304 x 1440 isn't too shabby either. The only downside is you need maintain a crt as time goes on and for one this size you need a reinforced desk to support the weight!

I'm not knocking it, that's a great monitor :)

There's pros and cons for both technology, but i'm firmly in the crt camp - you just can't beat them for a 3d image that jumps out of the screen.

Had my Samsung 19" LCD for a few years now with no problems. When you go from a CRT to an LCD the difference in sharpness is amazing.

Just bought a Samsung HDTV too.

Samsung ftw.

My monitor is about 5-6 years old and still works like a charm, but thats probably because its one of those super LCD monitors from IBM, weighs tons.

Pay more $$$ = Long lasting good quality monitors

My friend has a 72' 1080i Samsung LCD TV, and GTA IV looked like pure shite on it.

I was told GTA IV's native resolution was 720p so I tried switching resolutions in the 360's dashboard console. Still looked like shite. Maybe he had his HDMI/component cables installed incorrectly or something, but that's too much hassle when GTA IV looked so much better in comparison on my old 19' HD TruFlat CRT. :|

Saturos, I like to express my condolence to you and to your LCD. My friend, LCDs were meant to last for over 3yrs (Maybe 4 or 5yrs) whichever is correct, and mine (In my Sig) was bought on 03/07 and its still functioning and pretty.
Maybe TD gave you 1yr warranty, but, if you check with Viewsonic, they may have additional factory warranty offered.
Give them a call, what do you have to loose.

Good Luck.

The only thing I don't like about LCDs is that they are blurry with motion.

Case in point, Stepmania. The arrows flying up the screen are like motion blurred. It's quite annoying. CRTs are much sharper with motion.

Yes, may my LCD rest in piece...s. LOL

It won't matter to me much in a month anyways. I'm leaving for boot camp. After 17 weeks or so of training and I get stationed and settled in with a roomate, I'll be able to afford a new monitor, and a completely new build. :> (except for the HD, I'll be back to get that.)

My current LCD will be the trouble of my poor mother once it finally kicks the bucket.

Yeah, there's nothing that can be done about that. You can have a 1ms response time and the image will still blur in motion - it's a downside to the technology. Plasma screens fair better, but still aren't as good as crts. The second best for motion, to my surprise, turned out to be projectors - motion wise they're a whole lot better than lcds. However, when it comes to general browsing and slower paced games that suite a nice bright palette, you can't beat an lcd.

:| Every game on the 360 outputs at 720p.

As for motion blur, I've never had a problem with blur. Hell, I've never even noticed it; though I haven't played any super fast rhythm game.
