Ok. I'm playing Garry’s mod. Everything is quiet, except for the odd cinder block colliding with the other, or the occasional splash as I drop a limp G-man into a pool of murky water. Then... I hear something. Something subtle... far off. An ambience? No, too random... sounds like a voice...
...and it's gone. I'm slightly baffled... but hey, could have been anything.
After a few more minutes of welding metal pipes to people's legs and watching them sink like a stone, there it is again. Clearer... it's in another language, someone speaking... a very melodramatic voice... but after a few moments, it fades away.
I'm getting scared now. Seconds later it's back again, louder than ever. Instinctively I fiddle with the volume control; the background noise from my headphones gets fuzzier, and I can hear the gentle knocking of some balloons in Garry’s mod, but the signal stays the same volume... then disappears.
So now I'm worried. I exit Garry's mod instantly, and load up MSN. In a state of panic, I want to talk to someone. First online person I see (just happens to be Hazar), I type furiously to, explaining what's happened, and why I'm worried. Hazar replies calmly, listing the possible causes...
"Are your headphones wireless?"
"nope.."
"Are they decent headphones?"
"nope, crappy..."
"Are you sure it's not a radio signal?"
"Well I find it hard to listen to radio one from my room, let alone a foreign station..."
As we talk, it kicks in again. It sounds... Spanish? No, more like Japanese... something like that. I take off my headphones; just to be sure it's not in my head, but the sound is coming firmly from my headphones.
And then it's gone. Just like that. The strongest signal, that had been getting louder and louder, vanished in an instant.
What could have caused this? I've just got some crappy headphones plugged into some cheap speakers. Can my speakers really pick up a strong foreign signal? Personally I'm baffled. OK, maybe if the headphones had been wireless I could have intercepted a mobile phone call or something... but speakers?
What do you think?
