OKAY so about a year ago I built my computer in anticipation for Half-Life 2. Fair enough,worked great until about a month ago, when both my CD-R/W-DVD and just plain CD drive just... stopped working.

Not only did they stop working, they stopped showing up in my computer completely.

Checking device manager, they're both there, but with little yellow exclamation points over them.

FINE... I can deal with that, so I tried to uninstall the drivers and reboot my PC, in which it reinstalled them but giving me the exact same effect.

FIIIIIIIINE, turns out they were corrupt (code 39 or some silly shit like that).

So off I go looking for a solution, in which I come upon many who have had the exact same problem as me, and I found a solution that happened to work for alllll of them.

Here it is:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

7. Restart your computer.

All seemed as though it would be fine afterwords. But to no mother ****ing avail, this has become the biggest annoyance ever and I think it's going to drive me to suicide.

Any of you have any suggestions?

EDIT: I apologize for the profuse and unapologetic swearing, but I can't help it.

Have you tried replacing the cable yet?

If both died at the same time, it could very well be the cable is messed up. Replace that and see if it works. Or maybe try connecting only one at a time, or switching master and slave.

I am, but I HAVE tried switching the cable. I might want to mind you that my mobo fried one night so I got it replaced, mounted and whatnot, it was the exact same one, but I was still using the original ribbon cables, but after this I tried switching them all with the new ones I got.

To no avail.

Bump.

Sorry to double post but none of you have any idea?
