I used InterRail (http://www.interrail.net/) which definitely seems to be the most popular and the price is always 400 Euros meaning that when the £ is doing well the ticket isn't too bad price-wise. Regardless of how much you spend on it, however, it more than pays for itself when you realise most trains are free or operate on an 80-90% discount.

There are other companies that do a ticket like it, EuRail for example is the one that's open to the whole world and not people from Europe but I believe it has slightly fewer countries covered. Then there's one that I can't remember the name of that costs about £600 but covers a lot of Russia as well. I can't recommend this trip enough to people. Definitely changed my life and I'll remember it forever.
