I'm joining the Marines

The only bit of advice I can give is that I worked in the recruitment industry for nearly 2 years, in a specialism which had many military experience candidates on their books. The things you learn in the military (leadership, team work, following orders etc) are good and generic abilities, however the gritty experience required in the corporate environment really doesn't translate, and it's very difficult to get out of. Many fall into a basic private security company after their service. The large bluechip organisations want corporate experience from a similar background. You could put on your CV "M16 advanced training course, tactical mortar firing course, commanded anti-aircraft on USS Kittyhawk" but they'll drop your CV for someone who has 3/4 years experience in a corporate environment instead. You won't be firing mortars in an office.

Good luck with your time in the marines, I'm sure you understand the commitment you've just entered into. It's going to be a long old road!

Are you speaking of officers or enlisted personal? I'll be joining the marines as a 2nd lieutenant working in Logistics.

Its a complete waste of time in my opinion, everyone I have known who have joined the army hated it, and were thrown out after a certain time period with nothing. And why you would wanna risk your life in the conflicts currently going on is beyond me, have your legs blown off in Iraq for the sake of oil interests, or severely wounded in Afghanistan against an ever increasing enemy who will NEVER quit until the western allies pull out. I respect everyone of the troops out there, but I still really dont get why they choose to do it, if global security was under threat then yeh, I would sign up myself and help them, but I dont get it with whats going on these days.

No, joining the army currently I think is one of the biggest mistakes you could make.

if the only people you know who were in the military were thrown out, there might be some unfair bias, dontcha think?

opinions ARE IRREVERENT!

Then what we're supposed to do is post facts?

My cousins fiancee joined the military when he was 20 and is now a 2nd lieutenant at 24. He currently works at Camp David and is in charge of most the Marines there. He says that it's a good experience, but the only thing he doesn't care for is that they wouldn't let him get married for 2 years until now. Eh, he says he likes it but I think he's brainwashed. :O

opinions ARE IRREVERENT!

I do not think that word means what you think it means

IRREVERENT: lacking proper respect or seriousness

you're obviously not saying all opinion lacks respect because that makes no sense

you're looking for irrelevant

...unless you did mean irrelevant but suffer from engrish-itis

The reason I'm joining is that it will teach me how to be a leader and how to employ people to get things done.
Isn't leadership slightly different in the army than in an office?

Y'know such as people not being court-martialled if they refuse to use a fax machine?

I do not think that word means what you think it means

Heh :)

In the office, you make them do push ups. That's even worse than court martial.

A marine is first and foremost a rifleman. So are you sure you wanna join the marines?
Unless you like that stuff, you might as well go to the army and do without the harsh physical training.
The best is off course the air force, good pay, relatively safe, you just have to put with fighter pilots and
their ego's.

Dude its your choice, but I think you are ****ing insane. You could be throwing your life away, and for what? Oil and "teh war on terra"? IMO it's not worth it, and many of the "benefits" are complete bullshit lies.

Good luck.

You're making the worst decision of your life.

Hey wait didn't you wanna join the marines to f*ck up some sandkips. I remember you hating them so much.

by all means join the marines ..you can club sandkips with your detached legs ....here's a tip: if you see a little mound on the side of the road that looks suspicious go and investigate/prod it with a stick/toe

As a happy citizen of the free world I thank you for your decision to join the front line in the war against fascism.

I truly believe the most progressive forces in this world are in Iraq and are called the 21st airborne, the royal marines and other coallition fighting forces.

The war we are engaged is in defense of democratic society. They will never stop attacking us until they have destroyed us. I thank you for helping to destroy them first.

Whether it's the best descision for you personally I cannot know however I wish you the best of luck with it.

lol solaris you've become a parody of your former self ..it's kind of disturbing; I kept looking to see if it was Numbers

Beautiful, just ****ing beautiful. Couldn't have said it better great but not the greatest buddy.
Hey man could you please tell me why you still haven't joined the royal marines, you know
being a fine young man that you are. I would hate to see you spend your life doing a job
that will get you somewhere in life instead of fighting the brave fight, so those dammed
liberals are free to criticize our freedoms.

I can't answer this becuase I don't really know.

The reason I haven't enlisted in a combination of the following:

My distrust of British foriegn policy, what if Cameron is elected and decides to invade Venezuala? I couldn't take part in that.
The only people I personally know who joined the army were dick heads/morons when I met them.
My old socialist self still voices itself somewhat.
I don't want a military carear.
Fear?

This.

Semper Fi.

The reason I'm joining is that it will teach me how to be a leader and how to employ people to get things done. If I worked for a private company out of college, I might be in a leadership position after a few years; but if I join the marines, I'll automatically be an officer in charge of a platoon of marines. In the marines, 3.5 years could get you further than if you worked 20 years in industry.

So basically marines are "man" scouts?

did i mention that I'm applying for OFFICER school as a logistics officer. That's not the grunt shit you guys are thinking of; i might be in Iraq, but it would be in a base giving people orders.

We know you said that 50 times. I still don't think army 'leadership' would translate to a corporate setting as well as you seem to think it would.

I'll be joining as an officer as well. Oh BTW numbers America pretty much made your military what it is today.

Yeah, I know. America is awesome. Makes armies and shit. :p

Although, strictly saying, the modernization of our military happened mostly in the 70s, during the vietnam war, when we sent troops in exchange for money and M16s, as well as upgraded M48 pattons. After that, we pretty much made on our own. :)

Anyway, I still think that it's a very honorable thing to do, and I wish you the very best of luck. :D Good luck defending the free world, placing your life at risk so that mankind may enjoy freedom and inherit peace.

I think that I've finally got to him, and installed the truth. :E

I thought 2LT ~ Captain was a frontline rank?

I've seen pictures of majors in full gear in Iraq, with Iraqi army/security personnel.

EDIT: Oh. Logistics.

I respect the Marines. Semper Fi and carry on.

I just hope you know what you're getting yourself into.

BTW, it's an insult to call a Marine a soldier. Not saying you didn't know, but just in case.

best of luck to ya man
but you Americans really need a good military unit that
excel in desert type landscapes, because your gonna be there for a while

Vaguely relevant random fact: Our marines are called "Daemonhunters" or "Ghostbusters"

How is there no TV series about S. Korean Marines on the Sci-fi channel?

Because the sci-fi channel does not deal with history, and the History Channel deemed it too ****ing awesome to be handled.

"Sir, studies indicate that if we show this on TV, all these kids' heads will explode."

"Sell it to the North Korean news stations."

if the marines are anything like your combat police they're easily defeated with nothing more than a bamboo stick and a homemade flamethrower

You have my respect & sincere thanks for joining any branch of the armed services.

In the marines, 3.5 years could get you further than if you worked 20 years in industry.

First off, thats not entirely true. For example, every job I have ever had, where I work in direct contact with other employees, I have been promoted within 3 months of starting, because I always bust my ass & thus work harder than the average man or woman. Put in the effort & it will pay off. If you spend 20 years at the same job & never move up, you are (excuse me) the dumbass for working there & for your lack of effort. You will learn that quickly while in the military. You could have a Ph.D, but that alone will not mean you rise high in either the military or in the corporate world. Now, if you put in the effort, you are right. In 3.5 years, you very well could be further up the ladder, as most companies will see the training you recieved in the military & this can open doors sooner.

Or

It'll take less than 3.5 seconds to die when a snipers bullet turns your head into hamburger if you get deployed. Being in control of the lives of others, is a HUGE responsibility.

Either way, I wish you luck.
