I'm not a big fan of jumping puzzles, but...

Remember early in Half-Life when there was a series of crates suspended over a seemingly bottomless pit and you had to jump from one to the other? Now, imagine that same thing but with HL2's physics causing the crates to swing when you land on em.

Puzzle? What's the puzzle with that? I only saw it as a neccesary route to get across :)

i hate games where you have to jump 900000 times to get to the next area and you save the game 40 times and you still fail, so you crack it hard and cheat muahaha!!!!!!

While HL2 makes my pen0r tingly too, I really hated those Mario bros sequences where you had to jump over crates and containers, just to flip a switch: I really hope they cut down on the FPS platform crap this time.

They never seemed like puzzles to me. Jumping in games after playing since I was 12 seems almost natural. I don't see the point in them though, as they only slow you down. Most jumping Puzzles in any game?:Zelda: The Ocarina of Time

That's really funny because Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, didn't even have a jump button.

I've a feeling there will be less jumping in this game than the previous.

That was the strangest part about it. You had to jump up by climbing up rocks and dropping off. You would jump, but there was no jump button. Makes it easier to program. Maybe I'm thinking of a different game?Nah, you are just drunk with power. Evil scum.

DIE, you OMG HALF-LIFE 2 IS DELAYED NEWBIE!!!

They need so called "jump puzzles" in the game anyway. Why? Cause that's what the real world is like! :)
For example, if I wanted to get out from my room via the window in relativly good shape (one a broken leg), I would have to:
A) Jump up to the window.
B) Jump further than the stone just beneath, to the soft grass.

And if I wanted to get over a puddle of mud, I would jump over it. I wouldnt crawl over it, sidestep over it, or stand there trying to spot a walkthrough. I would simply... jump...

hahaha. good point dawdler. life is much more exciting when you look at it as simply a few jump puzzles.

gabe has stated that there will be physics puzzles in half-life 2. this could mean alot of things.

but i'm sure if you can jump, there will be jumping involved.

I think I'm going to jump out my window and see what happens, be right back...

aaaaaaaaaarhhh...

i think "physics puzzles" refer to things like :

I need to get by the fan without it killing me, but its up in a tube so i can't jam a barrel in it...but if i follow the pipes along the wall i find a power generater with a big turbine...and oh look there's a ledge above it with barrels. So i'll just toss a nade up there and the barrels will fall into the turbine and it will jam and the machine will overheat and explode (by which point i'm safely away) and the fan will stop.

If HL2 doesn't have jumping puzzles I'll be disappointed because they're an integral part to the whole exploration feeling I got when playing HL1. Such as I can't reach point A by simply walking there because somethings in the way, so I must crawl through a vent jump across this gap, walk across this beam, etc. - I don't know, I just enjoyed that kind of level design. Made it seem like you really were in a facility going to shit...

What dawdler mentioned isn't really a jump /puzzle/. Figuring how to jump out of a window is hardly a puzzle. The crate-jumps in HL1 that were mentioned in the first post aren't really a puzzle either. A puzzle would involve altering the state of your surroundings by jumping, with the goal of solving a problem (closed door, whatever). Can't really think of one in HL1. Ordinary puzzles in HL1 were found aplenty (fuel/oxygen supply in blast pit). I really would like physics puzzles like Typhon describes. Perhaps breaking a barrier (concrete wall or something) by ramming it with something big (susprended T-beam like in traptown) would be nice. Or arranging items in the world with the manipulator to build a tower, and let it tip over to knock down a fence. Hmmm, physics is cool.

Edit: 69 posts woohoo! :p
