I'm about to format my HD and do a complete reinstall.
Now, this may seem normal to some of you people, but I've really never done it before, except 1 time about...2 years ago when my computer died of unknown causes.
So..I think I've backed everything up well, I have the necessary driver disks sitting next to me or residing on another partition.
Anyway, wish me luck everyone.
Hopefully I'll be back by sometime tonight to let you all know how it went.

I guess I'll be around for another 1/2 hour, waiting for some drivers to download :-\

lol, make sure you know you're forum password!!!
I'll worry 'bout that once my computer's up and running ;)
EDIT:
And he's never heard from again
Thanks for that vote of confidence

Don't worry, if anything goes wrong, I'll run down to my Dad's computer and come on here deman..err...begging for help :P

:hold's niccy: i'm hear for you man :( I know how scary that can be

Dont use IE if possible, average time for a winxp box with IE connected to the net to become infected = 20 minutes

(thanks blaster, sasser, etc...)

Lies! >_> -_-

I've programmed several sites that install programs using IE vulnerabilities, and its damn hard and not worth the effort. There arent that many sites exploiting it. And all the exploits use active scripting, so turn that off and your pretty much set.

After using FF for a week, i'm back to using IE again :-/
FF just had too many lil annoying things to it...
However, i do really miss adblocker :(
Ill have to program my own version of it for IE.

Well, thanks for the support, everyone. That went off smoothly, except for the part where I erased all my sister's music (she didn't save it in the My Documents folder) which she had composed and now my family is all pissed off at me, even though she knew I was going to erase the hard drive.

She figured that I meant I was going to do it "sometime," not "this afternoon".
Whatever.
Eating dinner with them should be fun.
Installed FireFox ASAP, downloading SP2 now, as I just realized I deleted it from my seperate partition a couple months ago. Meh.

I feel bad about it because she spent alot of time on it, and it all sounded real good, and now it's gone forever.

Hopefully it will teach her to make sure she saves stuff in the right place.

She composed music and saved it to the harddrive without making a backup?

What an encouraging thought!
She composed music and saved it to the harddrive without making a backup?
Yep. She doesn't know too much about computers.

i remember when i first got interested in computers and learned about DOS and formatting, i would usually format at least once every 2.5/3 months.
but recent years its changed...i have less time for many reasons and slowly my memory has gotten foggy on formatting and such...so yeah it can be scary when ur not sure :(
the other thing that scares me is trying to do a Linux install...i was more familar with it back in the day...but now having totally lost touch... ehh.. :|

I was hoping that it might help my 3DMark03 scores, unfortunately, it didn't.
They are still a pathetic 8500.
My system is:
AMD Athlon 64 2800
Geforce 6800 128 MB (the plain vanilla version)
1 GB DDR 333 Mhz RAM
VNF3-250 motherboard

I think the next step will be flashing my BIOS, another thing I'm scared of doing, but I've done it before. :-\

I'm confused how is that 8500 pathetic. Look at what hardware you have, vanilla 6800, DDR333 Ram and a 64 2800. I'd say those scores are on par with what you are using.

Because I've seen people with lesser hardware get 11,000 or more.
I dunno, maybe I'm a hypochondriac when it comes to computer issues.
