It has to do with cell phones, and how useless they are for me except for dire situations. Simply put, going to Uni 40 minutes away without a cell phone is not an option. For one thing, because I can't afford not to have a phone if I break down on the highway, secondly because I can't even get a commuter parking permit without providing a cell phone number. Anyways, aside from the 10$ a month, it is such a hassle to carry it around in my pocket, turned on most of the time (supposedly, the purpose of providing a cell number is so campus security can contact if there is an issue with vehicle). For most people, they are already doing this regularly because they use a phone for lots of things like calling friends, etc. But for me, it feels like such a straining issue. I hate it. And carrying it in a bag or anything else isn't an option because it needs to be set to vibrate/no-ringtone in case it goes off during a class.

You'll get used to it. It felt weird when you first started carrying your wallet around every day, too. That's kind of retarded that they won't even let you get a parking permit without one, though. Up here in Canada it would probably be presented as a courtesy feature if you happen to have a cell phone.

I hate cellphones too. I only carry mine because I have to. I really don't have anyone to talk to (I'd just talk to them face to face). I just keep it with me in case my boss calls and for whatever important phone calls I need to make (almost none).

I didn't have a cell phone until like 3 years ago....

Also, It's not that bad, jeez.

My first cell phone had a giant antenna, folded up, and weighed like two pounds. Now that was a pain in the ass.

My first cell phone was a pay phone inside a telephone booth. It weighed like 60 points and could only work if you re-connected the cord I ripped out of the ground when I first got it. Now that was a pain in the ass.

I really need to get a cheap one.

I thought I made this thread for a second, until I realized I didn't.

They're just like keys and a wallet, put them in your pocket.

Heh, last time I put a cell phone in my pocket, it busted the LCD display... cost me 60 bucks to get repaired.

Get one of those pay as you go ones. You can have it for emergencies but you don't have to pay for anything except the minutes you use (which apparently would be minimal).

Raz, where do you keep it if not your pocket? Your mouth?

Heh, well that's why I've always sprung for cheap, tough, and functional, but that's just me.

For all that, you could have just walked home from band practice!

I don't normally carry a cell phone. It wasn't my cell phone. Had it while doing a job so I could make a call in case I broke down or otherwise got in trouble. Pulled it out of my pocket when I got a phone call one time, and the LCD screen was all borked. The outer plastic casing was fine... but I guess too much pressure against the LCD screen.

Funny thing is, the cost to repair that phone took up basically all of the money I made in those two days that week.

His phone is the cheap type. No flip, no nothing. It's just basically a standard nokia generic phone.

I keep it in my backpack on silent. I probably miss 90+ percent of the calls I get.

I'm a 26 year old tech school IT graduate with a minor in C++/java programming, and I have to say I've never owned a cell phone in my life. Never needed one. They're more of a headache then they are worth for me most of the time and I don't like having one more thing to spend money on every month. If someone has something to say to me, then it must not be very important if they can't haul their asses to my current location and tell me in person.

I'm still waiting for a cell phone as thin as this (please excuse consumerist image)

That would actually be kind of neat tbh, even for a cell phone.

I'll probably have to get one eventually, but I just want a simple, electronic brick. You know, a PHONE!!! One step above two cups and a string except it's wireless. That's all anybody needs really, as I'm all about 'no-frills' practicality and efficiency.

EDIT> Although I think cheap and simple, I would still want a phone with hi-quality hardware I can get good (read 'excellent') coverage/reception with.

When I say 'cheap', I mean no fancy apps or widgets, not the hardware itself.

Anyways, ^this^ is the kind of phone I would look for if I were the OP.

I have a cell phone.

Because I have a social life.

Oh no, now I will be able to communicate with other humans much easier now. Also, now if there is an emergency, I can quickly call 911.

Oh life is getting tough!

I use this (because my parents pay for it), it's good in the beginning but quickly becomes a pain in the ass when you realize how expensive minutes are.

If you have a plan that is only 10 bucks a month, definitely stick with that.

Pfft, prepaid credit all the way. $25 lasts me 3 or 4 months.

/edit of course, I'm not livin' it up all that often...

You don't have a social life.

You only think you do. They needed to give you an excuse to put yourself on the grid.

My plan is $60/month :(

You don't even want to know what my brother pays for his.

I didn't even know it was possible for people to pay that much for a ****ing cell phone service. More than double the FIOS bill(which he also pays).

Why would you NOT want a cell phone? Don't you have friends?

Some of us are angsty and don't like communicating that way. As it is, I only tolerate communicating via phone or internet when the circumstances make it necessary.

Are you aware that you can turn the phone off when you don't want to recieve calls?

Cell phones are a great convenience of life.

If you guys don't know how to take advantage of that well, then sorry.

Two phones on my plan with my Moto Droid - $120 a month.

$103/m for my iPhone.

Thanks Rogers!

You have nobody to blame but the person who caved and bought an iPhone.

Sometimes when I can't pay the bills I turn off my phone for days on end. It's very satisfying.
