That's not old, that's AWESOME. That's seriously one of the coolest things ever. I want that car/bike combo. I want to drive it out on the road and be a ballsy kid and jump off the back on the bike, probably killing myself in the process but looking radical as all hell.

that's totally fake, there's no way "Mr. Gutierrez" writes like that

Request

Requesting funny motivational posters. Emphasis on funny. I mean the clever type like the one with Geroge W. Bush praying and the text says "Praying: how to act like you're helping while doing nothing" etc.

Funny. I was just about to request that people stop posting motivational posters.

F*cking hell, worse trend than lolcats? I think it's possible.

Yeah but I was only requesting for the funny ones. I think most of them are crap and pretentious, just like lolcats. But some of them are funny (unlike lolcats, which are always stupid and unfunny).

I think the trick to being a funny motivator is not to repeat what's in the image or do it in such a way that it ADDS to the image. It's like image macros. Will the addition of your text make this image funny? Does it enhance, or simply repeat? The latter often backfires; instead of making it funny, it subtracts from the already apparent joke. Let's have a visual demonstration:

^ THIS is not a funny motivational poster. The image itself was (slightly) funny (I like Peach's crazy face), but the motivational just ruins it. We can already see who it is and what she's asking; you do not need to repeat it. The image wasn't really humorous to begin with, but you've stripped a part of its charm away because you felt you HAD to restate what the picture already says.

Conversely, look at this image. We can clearly see that it is, indeed, a mouse wearing a tophat standing by a microphone, but for some reason the fact that you're being told it is a mouse, it is a mouse yelling into a microphone and he has a hat on makes it funnier. You don't even understand the context, but it's hilarious. Why? You don't know.

This is already a funny image. A Power Ranger out on the street begging for money. We can already tell he's broke, and we know he's powerful because he's a POWER RANGER; neither of these things need to be repeated. Does the text add anything? No. Does it take away from an already good image? Yes. While it isn't repeating something in the image (like Peach with "Who wants cake?") it is describing the image to you. That's rather condescending don't you think?

Now here's a good example. The picture is just Lovecraft's face; creepy, but not funny or even very interesting. But the text is adding to the picture! It takes a non-amusing picture and puts a scenario in your head that makes it funny. This is a good job. This is an example of a very good motivational poster.

So there you have it: a good motivational enhances with text, never repeats or states the obvious. I hope you've learned something from this workshop; tune in next time when Darkside55 discusses The Bandwagon Image: How to Know When You've Missed It.
