I've always wondered what those were...I'm pretty sure they're not zeppelins as they don't have the carrier thing, I think they're just markers showing where the different landings are on the beach.

a zepplin doesnt have to have a cabin in it. you are correct though, they are just ballons marked where other ships have landed. its a beautiful sight that would be awesome to see.
 
Higlac already pointed out on the last page - they're barrage balloons, to deter aerial attackers and dive-bombers. The most accurate way to take out those ships would be dive-bombing but you couldn't really do it because of the balloons and their steel cables.

But balloons are fairly stationary, isn't it childsplay to just shoot them down.
I imagine one aircraft could shoot several down, at least faster then you could build them.

No. Because all of those ships were also equipped with AA and there were P-51s on patrol and more available just across the channel that could have been scrambled in seconds. It wasn't worth it.

You don't get the point. Without the balloons a quick strike could be made that did a ton of damage to US shipping with little risk to the attackers. With the balloons, now the attackers would have to shoot down a bunch of easily replaced floating pieces of rubber before they can even get to the shipping.
