I think it all boils down to the fact that the moderators have decided to take the lesser of two evils; it was either deal with small amounts of pictures in oceans of text, usually with a dice throw's chance of quality, or we go this route with at least some symbolization of quality control.

As for me? I've been running low on bandwidth lately, so I'd rather not wade through crap-loads of pictures in spoilers that bog me down anyway. At least in the old days you knew who didn't give a shit, and even then they sometimes tended to give a variant of criticism and quality control themselves.
