Well yes, but you really have to consider how much editing went into that photo, and that when they edit a photo of a person they often try to have either the rest of the person or the clothing they are wearing match the tone of either their hair or eye color.

yea, multiple shots of the same subject at different exposures then you use a program like photoshop or photomatix to combine them. HDR is a simple concept, and it's amazing how many people fail horribly at it:

The thing a lot of people seem to overlook is the fact that a picture should NEED multiple exposures. Your car at noon on a cloudless day doesn't need what HDR can offer, however like the above photos if you want to capture the dark sky without losing the details of the building then you will need at least 2 different exposures.

It's not that amazing actually. People tone-map their images and go "WOW! This looks so unreal! Lemme just check what this slider does... Holy shit, so wicked!" And instead of using the technique to improve their photos, they suddenly feel the urge to create something almost abstract.

There are a lot of stunning HDR photos, though.
