why is voyager 1 further away than pioneer 10?

voyager 1 was launched in 77 and pioneer 10 was launched in 72?

Voyager 1 is currently the farthest human-made object from Earth, traveling away from both the Earth and the Sun at a speed that corresponds to a greater specific energy than any other probe.[1] Though its twin space-probe, Voyager 2, was launched 16 days earlier, Voyager 2 will never pass Voyager 1. Neither will the New Horizons mission to Pluto, despite being launched from Earth at a faster speed than either Voyager craft. During its flight Voyager 1 benefited from a number of gravity assisted speed boosts. The current speed of New Horizons is greater than Voyager 1 but when New Horizons reaches the same distance from the sun as Voyager is now, its speed will be about 13 km/s compared to Voyager's 17 km/s.

edit:

so the Pioneer 10 is fitted with this nifty little plaque in case an alien species comes across it:

and large version:

What does that plaque even say? I understand it maps out our solar system, but what are those two circle things at the top? Whats that diagram of to the left of the humans?

edit 2: never mind just had to wiki it... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pioneer_plaque

Shit yeah space! What really sucks about some missions like those 1970s probes is that we're going to get better and better technology to make them go faster and detect more but we can't upgrade them since they're so far now.

So how long will they last? The life span part on that link didn't really give a conclusive number that I saw...So will the probes eventually just be shooting out at the speed they are or are they programmed to return after a certain point?

They do not return to earth. Most, if not all, of the probes sent out have a single chemical rocket burn, and coast through space for the remainder of their lifetimes.

Some probes currently in planning may return to earth using a xenon-ion engine, but no probes out there currently have this mission plan.

Yeah, I tried looking on other sites, but they were vague too. So this is it in a nutshell:

Pioneer 10 is most likely dead or just on the verge. The last successful contact was back in January of 2003. It was a very, very weak signal. They tried a month later. No contact. They tried again in 2005 and 2006. still no contact. So its probably run its course. Its just sailing out into space with no power. Its currently heading to the star Aldebaran of the Taurus constellation. It was launched in 1972 so its power lasted just over 30 years.

Voyager 1 and 2 are thought to have enough power to continue communications until 2025. They were both launched in 1977 so they have an estimated life span of 45-50 years.

Pioneer 11's power source degraded to a point that in 1995 that it could not operate any one instrument. Thus the mission ended. Its currently heading to constellation Aquila. It launched in 1973 so it only lasted 22 years.

As for New Horizons, it just says that they're using a sort of hibernation mode to conserve energy until it reaches Pluto in 2015. That way they can do a bunch of tests on the planet and its moons without worrying about conserving power.

I don't know why the Voyagers are lasting so much longer. Maybe the instruments on board don't hog up as much resources as the Pioneer's did?

No amount of criticism ever stops images filled with memes or captions. Can't some of you find good, unique images?

Hey Warped, don't hotlink.

You got ****ed over on the last image.

You could also try just not posting images anymore.

A very annoying seizure-inducing image telling you to not hotlink.

While it would be neat to have any of these, I think it would be to weird to actually ride around. Except maybe the Confederate Fighter. But it costs 100k so never in my lifetime

the 1st one looks like a futuristic cop car, the others look like they could be in a final fantasy game

yeah it does. its powered by a dodge viper engine. Unfortunately it cant really turn so even if you could afford one you couldn't show it off on the streets.

all you need is an oval track or a straight highway though and you're set!

How does the red one even move? There looks to be no moving wheels. :/

The only one of those bikes that doesnt look absolutely retarded is the first one, and it barely misses that classification.
