i usually leave the news up to thenerdguy as he usually picks out the interesting tidbits, but didn't see any threads about mars landing. Its pretty neat to see the high quality images they're getting there of our neighbour planet. Most of u probably have seen this or heard about it but check it out http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/space/01/06/mars.colorpic/index.html

Wonder when they're gonna send a manned craft out there.

holy, thats a big friggin pic, thx for the add. What's the purpose to going there tho? suppose they find there was water there, or proof microscopic life existed, its fascinating but what good does it do us in the end? I can see maybe mars being used for metal or something in the future if we run out somehow.

Yeah, they're looking for water and any sign of vegitation that was ever on mars.

imagine if they found a destroyed city, haha, that would disband any previous theyory.

Shame about Beagle 2, i was looking forward to seeing that up and running on mars :(

Well it's the easiest planet for us to colonize. It already has a thin atmosphere, and by building plants to burn .. stuff .. we can both warm up the planet and create more CO2. Then certain plants and microorganisms can be used to convert the CO2 to oxygen.

Of course the whole process would take hundreds of years ..

Awsome thanks , it makes an awsome background , now I just need a red XP theme.

What ever happened to it?

I think this new rover should find it somewhere :D

good idea. And I was wondering when someone would make a topic on this.

I think they just never got a signal from it :(

It would be the funniest thing ever if they met. Then mated through their probing tools and colinated mars with lots of little mini-rovers......wait better stop there, i heard that's the story for Doom 3

I'm pretty sure there's proof of both isn't there?
Mars has what appear to be dried up rivers (the shape etc, is obvious in the landscape) and more importantly it has icecaps, so it DID have water in some form or other at some point.
As for microscopic life - wasn't there that asteroid (which appeared to come from MArs) found in the Antarctic with fossilized bacteria on it?
Am I way off the mark?

Yeah there is some frozen water on Mars. Not a lot .. I think it's enough to fill up one of the great lakes.

As for the asteroid .. they are not entirely sure if it is fossilized bacteria or just a rock formation. It looks like bacteria to me though :)

hmm i believe yur right about the whole water thing, but i've never heard about the meteor with bacteria, thats news to me. Suppose water was on mars, where the hell did it go? Hmmmm thats a thinker. Is it possible for there to be water below the surface? Wasn't there evidence of water on the moon too?

Yes there was. and in the words of Eddie Izzard:
"Recently, scientists found that there may be ice on the moon. Who cares!? rock and ice does not a good party make."

And now Dubya wants to colonise it or something doesn't he? :hmph:

LOL it looks like NASA pulled the hi-res link from their website because it got overwhelmed with traffic. Thankfully I bookmarked it first :cheese:

it would be a big deal. it sort of invalidates a lot of religions. god created heaven and the earth but no mars baby.

yes i concur, you humans are far too nosey for your own good

Have people started claiming Conspiracy, yet?
I mean, we still haven't landed on the moon according to some idiots.

EDIT: We also need a Martian Rover that will plant an American flag in the ground.
Making it ours, just like our precious moon. :)
