Images in Signatures

This forum is very well kept and organised, allowing signature images would only ruin it in my personal opinion. I think the avatar limit is good too, not too big, and not too distracting. :)

Text signatures are different. I love reading what people put in their signatures. Just really hate the idea of image sigs.

oops, sorry, image signatures are what i meant lol.

Just for reference:

I wouldn't mind the option of a wider avatar but I wouldn't make them much taller, if any, because it would stretch the layout a bit.

NOTE: The 64x64 avatar stretches the top area of my example by about 7 pixels if you maintain a 6 pixel gap (like the left side) on all sides of the avatar. It would probably be more because it seems like the vertical gaps on the forum are bigger than the ones I left (probably closer to 10 than 6).

Nice post... and nice idea. Hopefully mods will look into this so I could make a cheat-sheet avatar.

Yeah but most that dislike image signatures still really like the text signatures.

True but you can't expect average members to think of that, but those that comment on load times should use this.

I'm for larger ava and some what for images in sigs (I like art work). But I do understand the admins problem with enforcement of them. Even with text sig you still get a few that break the "only four lines" rule. But in the end image sig end up just being clan/site ads, distasteful, or both. Just look at my current ava it's pushing the tasteful barrier even now (waiting for a mod to tell me it is too much lol)

The fact is it won't change if a thread is worth reading with or without image sigs. So I think we are beating a dead horse, the admin have made mind up there minds and I support them on it.

The Dawn of War forums I administrate have a sig image limit - it's worked well so far, but I've had to delete a few questionable ones.

I vote no images in signatures but 50x100 avatars (as they don't stretch the layout and they allow us graphics people a bit more space).

no images in sig cuz they are a bit pointless and nobody care about them

also that sometimes when I go to some forums the Pc gets slow cuz there is a big image loading in some signatures

I hav see images signatures so long like these

filled whit just some ramdon images whit the name of the user in writed in some "cool" way,and animated showing something like a scene of a movie

keep it like it is. I support Fenric on bigger avatars, but no image sigs, pleeease!

yeah, don't do what www.eldaronline.com did for their boards... unlimited sig and avatar size... people have like 300x300px avatars, the pages are all out of wack.

Oh yeah, and post # 1000!

I use image sigs sometimes on other boards but if I had a board of this size and business there is no way I would allow image sigs.

1. Adds a ton of work for the site admins trying to manage sigs. (nudity is just a start)
2. People can and will abuse the rules.
3. Animaged gif sigs will drive us all to suicide and bring the wold to an end.

here is a sample sig someone uses on another site I visit and I am about to stop going there.

I had to crop the bottom off because of blurred nudity. This thing is 1mb big too.

I would rather the staff around here work on hl2 related content. Not worry about image sigs.

Imagine this sig being every other post in a long 5 page thread. Can you say nightmare?

how about this sig someone was using on a board?

Yuck.

Those posted examples above really suck. (I also just noticed that we do not have a "vomit" emoticon. I believe it would be appropriate and warranted in this case. ;)

I do not like "good" image signatures either, for many of the reasons already stated. Additionally, for those images hosted by another server, it seems like at least one on every page loads slowly due to bandwidth problems on the other server so many pages are stalled or greatly slowed.

I do like the idea of larger avatars--even though I have not yet chosen one for this forum. Something like 60x60 or perhaps 70x70. I have been at some sites where they get up to 100x100, and although mine looks cool at that size, many do not. ;) Of course, the maximum file size (19.5 KB) can be kept the same. My two cents.

bleh
had to scroll down a bit to hide that friggin flickering sh*t.

short:
pictures in sigs - NO (waste of space, longer load times, sometimes irrelevant and annoying)
wider avatars - YES (that wouldn't change the forum too much from what it is atm so why not? besides larger avatars - often prettier avatars:p)

EDIT:

indeed - thank you...

What do the mods have against wider avatars? Wouldn't we have them otherwise?

Bigger avatars and signatures should be toggleable from the User CP. If you don't want them, just click "Do not show" or something. 100 x 100 for avatars and 100 x 450 for sigs wouldn't be that big of a deal. Then again, this is just my opinion.

avatars are enough self expression for one day. Having pics in your sig just plain sucks, they are ugly no matter what people say, they aren't uniform so they clash, they make pages download a lot slower and why oh why are they necessary?

I don't understand how the Ganguro Girl flying through the air being stabbed by Japanese Robot Fighter Pilots images help anyone.

Oh, I laughed so hard at that abominable animated gif.
And then I cried. Oh, how I cried. ;(

Yes, but you seem like exactly the kind of person we do not want having 100x100 avatars and any form of signature image whatsoever.

Well I've nowt against larger avatars, been harping on about having them for months in the mod forum/channel :p

I usually use 64x64 avatars, and I found coming here that 50x50 avatars were really limiting and quite hard to manage. However, I know on quite alot of forums, standard avatar size has become 80x80. I haven't made many this size, but I know it allows alot more freedom to create things.
I realize most people on here are against image signatures, but I have no idea what they're complaining about. Constantly they say how they look horrible and mess up the layout, but a constant signature size of 468x60 looks quite neat. Text signatures in that case look very annoying because they are all different sizes and colour, and a 468x60 signature is smaller than 4 lines of texzt. This can also very easily be enforced. Just ask someone to check for over large or offensive signatures. Delete any that are offensive, and if a person repeats this offense they get black arked, or their signature rights are taken away. A signature not only descrinbes the poster and what they're interested in, but it also seperates the posts allowing for easier viewing. The signatures are easily seen so when someone sees it, they know the post has ended and the next one starts - which is also kinda what an avatar does. I agree with you with image size and slower loading times - but that is where you enforce a signature size restriction, so you can't put in more than a 50k sig or something, and no animated signatures are allowed.

In another forum I go to they have it so that the signature only shows in the users first post of the thread, it loads just as quick as here.

Its stupid and annoying, its unneeded. If it were up to me there would be no avatars. This is a text forum where we discuss stuff not stare at other people's l33t pictures :p

If your life's work has to do with forum sig images, maybe you should consider what you just said very deeply.

lol, it was a joke :p

I design graphics for fun, I guess Im a geek - but it's better than alot of things... like reading neuro-physics for fun...

Let's face it:
Everybody posting here has an avatar. Why would you choose one if you didn't like them? Therefore, since you seem to like them, wouldn't you like to have a bigger one? Everybody wants a bigger one. Avatar, of course.

I can just see the spam mail now.. Increase your avatar size by 10 or more pixials guaranteed.
