*IMPORTANT* New Minecraft Server Information

My mates and I pay $40 a month for a linux CentOS VPS/VDS with 2gb of RAM, plenty of space and 2TB of bandwidth from Godaddy and have had a good experience with it so far.

^ Not sure if you can setup minecraft on the servers or not, but I get great (and reliable) deals from Arvixe.com

Whenever I get the rest of the money. (could be a few months)

I have some of the parts.

Server's up again...

EXPECT THE WORST. I don't know and I have no expectations on if it will be stable.

Here's the e-mail Steve fired my way.

Tim,

Your server is up, and your server is free. If you make a decision eventually that your happy with us. We can talk then.

Got back to work this morning. You're on new hardware, and the only thing that needs to be handled is your control panel. That should take less than an hour.

We've doubled you RAM at no additional cost. I don't want anyone to complain of slowdown.

I've also added a reboot feature to your control panel. Use that if you should ever need it.

We've grown to quickly, and we're making changes to be .more transparent with support and status in the coming days.

Thanks,
Steve

EDIT: Oh and here's teh google earth thing.

And is it just me or are the textures for this render job terrible? Cacti don't even show up.

The minecraft overviewer can work with any texture set, just need to replace the terrain.png in the server jar. Extremely simple. I think that those are default textures... I'd recommend painterly!

I think default is fine for overviewer.

Painterly is my favorite texture pack but I don't think it should be forced on everyone when everyone knows the default textures.

I used the default textures when I did it manually for us, and it didn't look like those.

Looks about the same to me :O

It might be some other crappy texture pack. I see what you mean with the cacti not showing up... the pink boxes remind me of the Source engine pink checkerboard missing material placeholder :D

I managed to get on just a few minutes ago. Runs nicely. All of my inventory was gone, though. Everything that was stored in my chests. :/ So much work.

Once the server is up and stable we'll have some sort of way for people to get some stuff back for themselves, as long as it's not completely unreasonable.

At least I hope you guys are cool with that. I have no intention of making people work to get all that diamond back or that obsidian they were mining. Would only ask that people be reasonably honest about the things they lost.

But really I'd like to think about that once we know hte server is stable or not.

like I mentioned it took me about 20 mins to get all my gear back. for some odd reason the game allocates important stuff to you (in my mind) cuz I found diamond almost right away and obsidian just looking once near the bottom. any other time i'd be hunting for hours for diamond tbh

It doesn't "allocate" anything. Once you walk into an area, all the blocks are generated from top to bottom and don't change unless you physically alter them. It's not just going to spawn diamonds or obsidian for you because it thinks you need it.

Badhat, Warped is using really long USB cables, so...

Let me know if it decides to go kaput during the day. I won't be able to see it but I will once I get home.

I'm honestly expecting it to.

I got in for ten seconds and then it crashed.

Working fine for me.

Maybe ZT forgot to change his viewdistance.

Glad to hear it.

If anything awry happens like that dreaded End of Stream thing in the middle of the night(for Americans), please let me know. This goes to you guys who play during those times... or people living outside the US. It seems to be while I am away at work before that the thing crashed. I just want to know about it, to be sure that we're not having these terrible problems anymore.

Once it becomes reliably stable that we're pretty confident on it, I think we should work towards getting people their missing inventories back, at least work towards doing so in a reasonable manner.

I wouldn't ask that admins spend as much time doing it as I'm willing to do, since I want people to get back what they lost through this process and will spend a lot of time trying to get everybody.

How do you guys feel about what we should do in replacing inventories? I know some people might exaggerate heavily about what they had, expecting to benefit from this inventory loss, and I also understand that some individuals really did have a stack of 64 obsidian or in one case, a stack of nearly 64 diamond(one of Viper's guys who was helping viper dig out massive amounts of earth).

Honestly in the end, if somebody tries to take advantage of it I'm not going to expect us to have a witch hunt or anything, since it's not like we're playing for anything other than personal enjoyment here... I would just ask that people be honest, and would prefer that they didn't claim having saddles or jukebox discs or anything else that they don't think they actually had in their inventory at the time.

Everybody is free to have a diamond pickaxe, shovel and axe to get them started... that much I think we should do at minimum.

After reading the new posts in the Minecraft section, I decided to see if I could actually play (and was amazed when I connected). I thought the map was just loading slowly until I fell down in a hole where a road used to be. It's like some madman went crazy with some TNT. I was hoping it was a griefing thing and not the server raping the map, so I quickly warped home to see the damage. All was fine. My chests are even in tact. Yay, etc. I am sorry for your lots. So now I'm only missing what was in my inventory, which was just tools, cobble I hadn't yet put away, torches, and some good stuff (a few blocks of gold and diamond).

Also, could we get some more free diamond tools near spawn? I was only able to take a single pickaxe.

Yeah, my chest items have now appeared. They were gone when I first checked. Someone griefed my stuff aswell (the stuff near spawn). Everything 4 miles away is fine.

Don't bother building anything right now. We're reverting the world. Or at least I'm hoping to. I'm still extremely disappointed that I don't have the ability to do it myself yet.
