I get the impression from ATI, Valve, Hardware sites, and different boards, that you won't get to experience HL2 fully unless you run a 9800Pro.
Almost like they are saying it'll run like shit until you pack a 9800pro. Anyone else sense this?

well thats the way it is, if you want all the dx9 features and playable framerates its what you need, of course you'll also get playable framerates with a 9500 pro or a 9600 pro or a 9700 pro, but ideally a 9800 pro is the way to go.

In some ways its almost like they are giving you no other alternative but to purchase the highend card if you want to play the game right. But then I guess not everyone thinks the same way.

Of course there is an alternative. But keep in mind, HL2 is another GENERATION than current games. The leap in hardware is larger than from games such as Quake 3 (very old) and Elite Force 2 (quite new). They are using the same engine, so its no wonder :)

But what people also seem to be missing is options. All benchies are run with them maxed... I dont even run a "old" graphic instensive game such as Mafia on max settings (or Morrowind, even older), and I still got a 9700 Pro. I want that extra speed, and I loose very little on the experience. The same will be for HL2.
