As British Petroleum scrambles to affix a four-story, 70-ton dome over the massive oil geyser venting toxic sludge into the Gulf of Mexico, people everywhere are wondering what else can be done to stem the deadly tide.

Komsomoloskaya Pravda, Russia's best-selling daily publication, has an idea: Why not just nuke it?

During the Soviet years, Russia's communists had to deal with numerous oil disasters and on five different occasions they employed controlled, underground nuclear blasts to quickly solve the problem.

KP also notes that subterranean nuclear blasts were used as much as 169 times in the Soviet Union to accomplish fairly mundane tasks like creating underground storage spaces for gas or building canals.

Doesn't seem like a bad idea if it can bring about a solution that causes less environmental damage.

who knew detonating a nuclear device would be less damaging to the enviroment
 
I read that article (or one similar) yesterday and recall hearing the argument that it may not only fail to solve the problem, but make it much worse. In any event, politics would get in the way of this even if it was deemed to be the best course of action.

Plus, think of the oil-covered crabs. We're gonna coat their home with oil AND nuke them? That just sucks.

I haven't been following this but I heard on the radio that it could take as much as three years to plug the hole with the means being suggested at the moment. Even if it can be done much sooner than that we're looking at months and months of oil leaking. Only one or two months of oil spilling and some radioactive material being spread into the ocean could be much safer. Radioactive materials don't just destroy everything they touch. There is quite a bit of healthy wildlife around Chernobyl while oil spills can prove pretty damn devastating.

Maybe an h-bomb to make storage space isn't that bad an idea.
