it shows one of the old xen creature(s) (Vortigaunt) as an ally. here:

"This enemy from the original game's Xen world has joined you in the battle to save human kind. Why this old foe decided to join you is still uncertain but look forward to finding out why when playing the game. "

hmm, which enemy was this? could someone post a pic or tell me something about it?
thanks

The alien slave ofcourse! You know the brown guy with big red eye that shoots green ( I know my colors!) lightning at you? That's what the vortigaunt is. And if you want to know more info about him regarding his presence in HL2, PM me.

alright, thanks
I just wanted to know which enemy it was.

Yeah, I always felt kinda sorry for the Vortigaunts. Even if the DID yell "DIE! DIE!" when running at you.

Glad they're on our side this time.

Not if you cover them, they won't.

The Best Buy Is An OWNED(tm) Buy... So Buy New And Improved COMBINE! Now Only 99c.

wow 99c, thats cheap. hmm think i'll make an army of them to take iraq for myself and get rich off he oil! i'll take a 1000 plz!

one thing
you will like to fight whit then like allies?,you will defend then?(cuz I always defend my allies)
cuz when I see a slave I remenber all the thousand times they shootme electricity
or you will use then like shields?

sinceresly I will defend then
cuz they are allies and they help you, why not defend then?

if they are allies will you do somehting like the pheromones to the antlions?

I always thought that the vortigaunt was bio-mechanical, because when I shot it in the back, it looks like its got pipes running along its back. Maybe they're clones like the Alien Grunts. I can just imagine 10 combine soldiers running away from a horde of 100-200 vortigaunts.

Vortigaunt Leader- "Die you ugly {obscure alien word}!"

I just hope they got better close range attacks, such as piercing through the armour of the combine's suit with its claws

Has anyone played the HL mod Point of View? It offers one possible story behind the vortigaunts. Obviously it isn't official, but who knows, Valve may have been given some inspiration by it...

I've heard of Point of View...

As to the metallic collar/covers on the slaves' backs, the ones with the pipes/handles, I think that that might be some sort of control device, if for no other reason than it reminds me of those ancient slave collars you see in movies.

Yeah...in POV the collar is a control device.
Hopefully some more about the vortigaunts will be revealed in the PC Zone preview at the end of the month.

Call me a nerd, but I wouldn't mind learning more about their life-cycle, behavior and anatomy.

Sounds silly, I know, but I've been like that ever since I read Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials...

since I haerd that the name of that aliens is "slave" I get the idea they are slaves
and the controllers are they owners

Ahem: No spoilers.

What Spoiler? Did someone not just quote Valve saying the Vortigaunts were on your side? Feh...

I hope he's more useful than Barney. In HL, you could play either with or without allies, it really didnt matter much. You could just get cool powerups or pistol support if you brought them with you. I dont feel like being forced to take them with me. I think people liked the choice, rather than the ally itself.

I guess my point is Gordon was the man in charge in HL, I hope they dont nerf him to some extent by making him codependant.

Just look at the Barricade video! If that isn't help I don't know what is! The AI is much better, you can no longer compare it to HL1.

Man this is going to rock! :D

They sort of just ran around not hitting much if you ask me... and getting killed. Making things appear more hectic.

And being liabilities...

Gordon should be able to take them on himself if he wanted to.

I'm not even going to start with you.
Can anyone else back me up? :p

Nah, I always got the impression that they were slaves (I am a very intelligent fellow) and seeing as you killed Nihilanth, that effectively sets them free to ally themselves with the side that freed them (yours/ours/Freeman's/yougetthepicture) to fight their old masters. I am:
a) basing this on very little
b) saying it as if it had crossed no-one else's mind
c)an idiot

I liked those slaves in HL1. I felt sort of bad fighting them. There was one in the Xen factory (at the beginning of it, he stood near the alcove with the thing that heals you) who seemed to want to be Freeman's friend. He kept kind of waving to me and watching me.

Yeah they were the coolest enemies by far and the factory room where they all are nice to you - uh! Makes you wanna weep tears of inter-galatictic friendship joy!

And then shoot them in the head. <Sighs>

yea, they kinda just chased after me and got pumped full of shotgun shells....

Nah, in the factory bit on Xen (the first room only though, I think...) they left you alone, occasionally looked at you but generally went about their business.

Obviously if you shoot at them they tend to get somewhat aggitated...

I nagging problem...guess not

I don't know about you guys, but this has been bothering me awhile. I'm 99.9% sure the vortigaunts are the large insectoids from race-x that look similar to the ant lions in opposing force and that the alien slaves are just called the alien slaves. I've attached pictures from the half-life model viewer that show there models and what they are called in the .pak file.

OPPS!! As I was getting the screen caps I realized that they are called the vortigores and not the vortigaunts though the similarity in the names is uncanny. Even though this post is probably useless i'll put it up anyway, i'm sure people have done worse things. Also has anyone else realized a slight resemblance between race-x and the alien invaders in half-life 2 though this is probably do to their insectoid nature.

wow, it looks alot like a stripped down version of the guardian antlion.

if xen is getting involved and the ant lions are from xen then that is just plain awesome, the sides are looking like aliens, combine, humans...i still liked blowing away marines though they were nasty people whereas combine are a bit too different...or maybe im a psycho, oh god.

Well, it's Voltigore, not Vortigore, so the name isn't really that similar. The slaves are also called Vortigaunts. Voltigore, Vortigaunt. Only a similarity of about four letters or so. The Voltigores are the biological heavy-weapons platforms, and the Vortigaunts are the bipeds.

I believe that the Xen and the Race-X are from the same general area... after all, they have similar blood... sort of a yellowy pus-like substance... Eeeuuuuurgh. Now I won't be able to eat tonight...

[EDIT] Come to think of it, I never noticed them being friendly to me... too busy shooting, I guess...
