I've always stayed away from Autechre's earlier material for whatever reason, instead preferring their releases and live sets from Confield onwards. Recently though, I was desperate enough (that sounds kind of harsh) for more of Autechre to go back and listen to Incunabula. This time something must've clicked because I really enjoyed every song, actually listening through the duration of each one (something I've not done before). However, it was only this album from their earlier material that I connected with. This seems to tell me that I'm looking for a pretty specific sound. Does anyone have recommendations that may be songs, albums, or artists fitting this, perhaps narrow, sound? thefiznut? Absinthe? TheAntipop? Others?

Although I'm no expert on IDM, I'd say it's more in line with the original Artifical Intelligence series from Warp. You'll find early works by Richard D James (under Polygon Window), Orbital (I think? I read that somewhere, they don't show up on the track listings), and of course Autechre. It's more geared toward what I'd call early 90's armchair EBM.

The primary reason I recommend this is because Autechre didn't choose the track listing for Incunabula. Instead it was the Warp execs who chose from their collection of demos when they were signed on. To me it would seem like it was their kind of 'proof of concept' release for the duo. As such it would be probably a better idea to look at other Warp releases around that era for similar stuff.

Check out Artificial Intelligence 1, you'll find The Egg, an earlier version of what would become Eggshell on Incunabula.

Of course, this is just me speaking from all I've read--having myself never listened to other early Warp releases.

On the subject of Incunabula: Which is better, Eggshell or 444?

Yeah, the first thing I actually did after listening to Incunabula again was to go and listen to the AI series. I'll have to check out some of the other releases from AI. I heard about Incunabula being more of a compilation disc, it flows really well I think. Toytronic released a compilation called "Neurokinetic" (cheesy, I know) that seems to fit this sound. Also, a group from Estonia, Myrakaru, released an album on Expanding Records called "Tammetoru" that seems close to what I'm going for. The latter you can stream on bleep, and "Neurokinetic" is, so far, amazing.

This got me excited:

I'm going with 444 on this one.
