How did you make the decision to narrow down what you wanted to do, and were you happy with that decision?

I'm at a loss. I'm about to finish community college and have a few pointers and (very) vague career interests/prospects, but no idea where to take it from there.

I'm in that position right now. I'm going into my second semester of sophomore year and I just switched my major to undecided from primary education. I guess I'm hoping for something to grab my interest other the next few months. Otherwise I don't think I can continue on through my junior year without a major/minor goal.

just go lawyer, thats what everyone do,well in my country atleast

why? cuz it seems you get money faster :/

What made you switch away from education?

I had ideas about what I wanted to be from when I was a kid. The focus of my interest waned often, but I still have always loved those same things.

I wanted to be an exotic pet store owner or a computer programmer. (and at least I work in the computer field - my brother ended up the programmer)

If you had ideas about what you'd like to be "when you grew up", you should consider them. Still interested after so many years, they're probably a safe bet.

It was tough. I had been doubting it since the beginning of this academic year. An adviser I talked to suggested I stick with it one more semester. I did, and I still felt wrong about it. Ultimately, I can't see myself standing in front of a classroom in five years, let alone ten or twenty. I know I want to work with children in some way, but the small amount of options I had with becoming a teacher was suffocating. I've never stuck with anything for too long, so I'm looking for something with more variety.

It's been an interesting semester it terms of learning about myself, that's for sure.

That's good advice. I think the fields, or even particular subjects that generate the most curiosity in a person, combined with the inner drive to satisfy that curiosity for the sole purpose of knowledge and the generation of new questions/ideas is the best starting point.

I'm in my sophomore year in high school, but so far I plan to do something in physics. Engineering is my fallback. Plenty of time for deciding, however.

Care to elaborate on what you studied at the CC? There's always the option of more school and working your balls off simultaneously so you can get a job that ultimately pays off all your loans and makes you the happiest in the long run. Essentially, you want to get paid for something that feels like it's not work at all. At least that's what I'm aiming for.

I'm in my third and final year of Creative and Professional writing, and it's something I've wanted to do for ages. I chose my A-levels like I wanted to be a computer programmer of some sort, but in my final year of high-school I realised I was terrible at maths, but very good at English. That's when my goals switched, and I haven't looked back since.

If you were in the UK I'd recommend going to a Scottish university, as they do the whole "breadth then depth" thing.
'course you could come here as an international student :p

I did my first two years of college not knowing what the hell I wanted to do... ended up taking a few years off from school and just worked a couple full-time jobs until I was ready to go back. It was really good in some ways as I'm absolutely tearin' through this school work now, but the sucky part is that I am sort of "behind" everyone else as I'm 23 years old and still have 1-2 years left before I finish.

I picked physics because it was my favourite subject in school. I'm still not sure what I want to do after. A masters seems likely at the moment. I'm very happy with the course other than it being quite hard.

I always knew as a kid that I wanted to do something with physics and mathematics. Those were the things I loved to do, and excelled at. At first, I wanted to become an architect. Over time however, engineering became more and more appealing.

I also became interested in computer science and electronics, so that's what I'm currently doing. Going for my master in Electrical Engineering next year.

That's fairly normal I think. A lot of people are undecided what to do after finishing High School. My advice is talk to the people at your school/college they might have some ideas. But you may want to do some research and narrow down your interests first.
