Fellow hl2.netters:

I have a paper to write on about infinity. Could any of you math whizes point me in the right direction to get information? Possibly a good resource for these kinds of concepts. (not wikipedia)

Maybe this could turn into some kind of discussion on infinity?

/serious

edit: just realized other thread has some infinity stuff, but this is more serious (I hope).

damn, thats gonna be a loooooong ass paper....

What class is the paper for?

A mathematics one I assume, since he asked for "Math whizzes"

If it were me, I'd just write "OH GOD IT NEVER STOPS!" and hand in the paper.

I'm writing it on the concept of infinity, is mathematical applications and how it is commonly misunderstood and misused in common language and popular culture.

The assignment was "Write a paper on a concept."

Edit:

Oh I would, but it has a minimum length of 5 complete pages to get a passing grade. I'm on the fourth page at the moment.

Sideways 8s and 'NO U TIMES INFINITY LOL' on a sheet of paper should do it.

What do you have so far?

Edit: Hmm, so far I have the concept, it's roots, philosophers/mathematicians that have made discoveries on it (galileo, aristotle, John Wallis, Michael Stifel), in what contexts infinity exists and common (low level) usage in mathematics.

As of now, I'm working on references in popular culture and in religion. Also, how it has been incorrectly used in pop culture.

All that needs to be said.

By the way I didn't read the thread, so I don't know if other people said the same thing.

I say as a practical joke, you hand in a full page of explanation each and every day, for all eternity.

Buy yourself a copy of this and turn it in. It's like at least thirty pages long.

I'm glad I don't have to write a paper on that.

Me, I don't care about infinity. Serves no purpose to me.

Douglas Adams on the infinity of the universe:

It is known that there are an infinte number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely products of a deranged imagination.

:naughty:

How about changing your mind to write a mathmatics paper discussing the concept that 0.999~ recurring is the same number as 1 ? I would find that far more interesting!

oh god. *palm face*

it is an application of infinity to discuss limits

1000000000000000000000000000000000.........

for five pages. Minimum.

Another good suggestion, keep em rolling in guys!

I could write on the infinite suggestions given to me by fellow hl2.net members.

Infinity is big. Really big. You might think one million is really big, but that's just peanuts to infinity.
