Insane High Res Textures

Check out how we discovered hl2 would have no detail texturing (though it's crudely supported now). Also have great fun reading threads where I'm flamed to hell and back for suggesting that HL2 adopt detail texturing, a material/rendering feature from 1999.

This isn't meant to be rude or a flame in any way but how is detail texturing related to this high res pack? I'm confused... Are you saying that this high res pack has detail texturing.....? I mean there's plenty of things they could do to make Source look better, but we should avoid discussing what the Source engine doesn't have and instead concentrate on discussing the merits of the high resolution pack...

*******

That being said, I went back and played some more HL2 tonight in 2048x1536, in both vanilla and using this high res pack... 8x AF - 0x AA. The only time I could notice a real difference is when I was right on top of a texture... It seems if your more than 5 to 10 feet away, everything looks almost the same, although buildings and objects do tend to be more detailed at a distance, it's really when you get up close that the high definition sticks out. It's close to photorealistic in the terms that you can take a far away object, and as you move closer and closer to it, it becomes more and more and more detailed.. Very much like real life in the way details slowly come into view and don't stop until your right on top of the object.. Vanilla HL2 on the other hand, objects hold less detail, and they reach a point 5-10 feet in front of the player where details stop popping up and pixels start showing... That's why I mention this pack really looks best versus vanilla HL2 at distances of less than 10 feet.

IMO it's probably worthwhile to play vanilla HL2 in a higher resolution than use the high def pack in a lower resolution... Get it...

The only time I'd use this pack is if your already maxxing out regular HL2 in terms of what resolution your monitor can handle.. Let's say you have an LCD with a max res of 1024x768 or 1280x964, your HL2 settings are maxxed, and your getting plenty of frames... since you can't go higher than the native resolution, and you can't turn up any more settings... THEN you should use the high def pack to increase the visuals... If you have a CRT, I'd just run vanilla HL2 in the highest resolution you can get good frames in... and use the high def pack only if your getting that good frame rate in the highest resolution your monitor can handle.

Basically I'd sum it up as the last possible improvement you should make to the graphics of HL2, it's obviously a great looking improvement, although it doesn't necessarily "UP" the fun of the game.

I believe he was suggesting that this was actually not a texture replacement, but simply added detail textures to the existing set.

I don't think that's the case though. Unless I'm mistaken, they are just higher resolution textures whereas "detail textures" are a whole another thing.

Discovered 1920 x 1200 mode - running fine at full settings. More scantily-clad pics in houses here and there. Sheesh.

Wow. The dl was worth it. This mod is freakin' phenomenal. Being able to read everything in Kleiner's lab was mindblowing.

It's a great mod, but some models don't look right. Like Barney's face for example, the cheeks are all screwed up. I'm glad they barely touched G-Man, however.

I downloaded it, installed it to the sourcemod directory *I Guess I did it wrong* and it doesn't work obviously..

where should I Put this shit?

Replace the materials section of the hl2 folder with this, thats what I did.

Theres more info on the readme.

Make sure you have the folders 'FAKEFACTORY_Cinematic' and 'fakefactory_cinematic_german' in sourcemods. Not the entire rar package. These folders are under '1. MOD Directory'.

I did, and that never worked..so I copied all the files from inside the folder into my HL2 directory. It wanted to overwrite some stuff, I said yes..and the rest flew in. I previously didn't HAVE a materials folder...

It was weird, now it still doesn't work though :(

this is a mod not an overwrite of your hl2 files it should show up in third party games

I agree it is slightly confusing to install. Don't second guess, just follow the directions to a T and everythings good to go. Just unzip in the directory they say. Then install the x-vid codec and your good to go. Maybe you didn't install the codec? The game should show up in Steam as a mod.

I don't like overly bump mapping textures and making everything dirty which is what a lot of those shots look like.

Agreed, making textures have more wear doesnt make them look better, and I would rather leave it as it is when looking at those screenies

Ok to say that all this high res pack is "more wear" is ridiculous. It's not more wear.. it's simply more DETAIL on every texture. One of the examples they happened to use were of a texture depticting worn metal...

The high res textures give a great effect to the game. From far away, they become clearer and come into focus, the closer you come to them, the more details that emerges. Forget HDR, this is an effect that looks just like real life now that everyone can appreciate..

Here's the best example I can give. From where I sit, I can see the Empire State Building, and it's probably a good 2 miles away. I can't make out the individual windows or bricks, but as I get closer, my eyes bring more and more details into focus.... windows individually emerge.... you can see the architectural details... until your two inches from the building and you can see individual ants on every single brick. That's the effect you get with the high res pack. In vanilla HL2, you can see all the details on every texture from far away.. getting closer reveals nothing new. Alyx looks almost the same at 10 feet as she does at 2 feet. In the high res version, moving in closer reveals new, individual strands of hair, details in the makeup, gloss on her lips, etc etc. Moving in on Dr Kleiner, you can now see the details in the design on his tie.. rebels now have scars that you cant see from 5 feet, but get up close and you'll see em.

As you can tell, I'm really just a huge fan of this mod. It's awesome! Wish there was something similar for Half Life 1 Source.

I have the Xvid codec..*need to for compressing some videos :p* but I have hte codec, and the first time I tried it, I had the third party game thing going in steam. I opened the game, it was regualr old HL2 textures. This is the second tiem around, now it wont show up in steam :(

It probably was the mod, cause I rarely see new textures anywhere. The first time you notice it is in kleiners lab, that was cool. And the characters look better.

My comp can handle it but all the player models look to weird. So no thanks.

you couldnt see touched up textures outside???

i personally love what they've done with the pusle rifle and the textures on the world model weapons. I also love seeing the citizens with their scars and grizzled features.

Wow, these textures look really awsome. Dl'ing now. Just hope my comp can handle it. Otherwise ill have waited *looks at downloads window* 2 hours for nothing...isnt cable supposed to make things fast? :p

*nods* i thought the same thing, and the faces of characters dont look right

Okay...I can't see a SINGLE pic off a SINLGE link. This is driving me crazy. What are these special texutures?!! I want to see too! Nothing works here.

Cool. That explains the health monitoring, as well as the whole helmet situation. The 20-30 degree variation inside the suit sounds unpleasent. :O

Heh, apparently there was some melodrama about the guy who makes these using a few bumpmaps created by someone else w/o permission. Files were unavailable to download for a while.

But now the thief and victim are working together for a Better Tomorrow! ;)

Where can I actually download this file now? A lot of the places seem to be shut down.

Thanks for the link, but for your info I looked on google for the filename and came up with nothing, also searched their site.

Why spoil a good gesture with being a smarta**?

Well, I just Googled "FakeFactory", which the name is mentioned around in this thread, and my link was the first to show up.

But yeah, you have the link anyway, so it dosent really matter. lol
