the Half Life II install is the hardest thing I've ever had to do
So, I put in the 5 cds and installed the game. Then, I went through the Steam configuration; got myself a steam account. Next, it went on to "decrypt game files" or something, which took hours. Finally, I opened the steam main window and selected CS source. It started to load, and then said "Game files missing. Will upload from steam server" or something to that effect. The files never downloaded, and I kept on getting this message.
So, I went to Control Panel and uninstalled Steam and Half Life II. However, the game/program files were still on my hard-drive, and the uninstaller in the "Steam" Folder didn't run. After nearly an hour of struggling with that, in an act of desperation I just deleted the entire "Valve" Folder off my computer. Next, I tried re-installing the game. It ran fluidly up until CD 5, when it started giving me bizarre error messages about file copying. Steam installed, but I don't think HL2 or CS did. I ran Steam, entered my account details, and reached the main menu again. I right-clicked "Half Life 2" and asked it to "install game". The next window that opened up was "Creating local game cache files", and "Preloading Half Life 2 files from Steam" with a download bar that has been stuck at 0% for nearly an hour.
What's wrong here? what Can I do? is my getting to play HL2 a pipedream after all? Why does Valve hate me?
Thank everyone who actually read my epic tale of woe. I'll be glad to hear any solutions, short of re-installing windows, and possibly re-purchasing the game.
